I've carefully explored the paths leading up to the final boss fight which, when auto-saved is "The Ruins" with Duke Prosper and the ben-hassrath in the field. I ran out of health potions on the path between the caverns leading out of the fortress and into the ruins (I struggled with only one or two potions the entire way) and now I can't get any more health potions.
It really sucks because apparently I can't backtrack or exit or go to a store or anything and come back. I've tried multiple strategies and somebody is sync-killed no matter what during the boss fight and I didn't give Anders the revival ability so he can't raise anybody from the dead either. His healing cooldown is too slow. I tried to spec him as a sexy battlemage, see?
What do I do? I know you're gonna say 'get gud' but on nightmare I honestly think Dragon Age 2 is comically hard in some fights and the Duke Prosper fight with the wyvern is one of those cases where it's impossible to get through with 0 health potions....
It's been years since I played this game but I've played DA2 and the DLCs countless times. I can't remember if it was on nightmare. Perhaps I always played it on normal and this is my first time on nightmare? Idk what's going on. I don't know how it became so difficult. Also want to mention this is the most insanely spec'd party I've ever had - I don't think I've ever played a game where I customized the party's tactics, attributes and abilities so carefully and so well. They've powered through nightmare mode (I'm near Act 3 already) with the best gear (each ring and necklace carefully reviewed and chosen for all party members) and dispatched enemies and bosses like terrifying killing machines because I spec'd them so well.
This battle is just broken.

You don't actually say what your party makeup is, but would I be correct in assuming that you are playing a party without a mage, and so have no method of healing whatsoever?
If so then unfortunately I don't think this fight is going to be doable with no healing capability at all, unless you turn the difficulty down to easy.
Even with a healing mage, completing it on Nightmare without potions would be a massive challenge. Not saying it's impossible, but it would certainly be really, really hard, and require quite a lot of luck as well as skill.
My advice would be to take the hit, turn the game down to easy and accept that you aren't going to win on Nightmare in this particular playthrough - try again in your next playthrough, wiser for the experience.
The alternative would be to load up an old save and do all the DLC again from the start, which kind of sucks.
Before starting the DLC I make sure I load up on Elfoot potions, rejuvenation potions, and lifeward Potions. I ensure that I have at least 20 elfroot and 20 rejuvenation, alongside standard health pots. I also like to have a two-Mage party for extra utility. Always bring a Mythal's Favour so that Talis can be properly respeced, and also bring along and give her any jewellery that boosts critical strike and/or defense.
For Prosper, I let Aveline begin tanking him in his standard mode, have Merril and Mage Hawk fling spells at him, being sure to use Merril's Wound's of the Past and Ensnare whenever it's available. Meanwhile Talis deals with the various guards and adds, quickly burning them down from range. Avoid the acid/poison pools on the ground at all times, repositioning as necessary.
As soon as Talis' Twin Fangs is ready, hit and run on Prosper with it.
Mabari will come into the arena, which will require some crowd control (Stone Fist / Horror), and both mages plus Talis to take out quickly.
When Leopold makes an appearance spread your three DPS party members out to each corner of the arena, and continue to avoid the poison areas on the floor, repositioning as required. Have Aveline tanking it at all times, and keep using taunt whenever it's available. Leopold will occasionally charge party members, so keep an eye on them and step out of the way.
Pound on Leopold, using Twin Fangs, Wounds of the Past and Ensnare whenever they are ready, all three abilities are boss killers. Heal as necessary, and keep an eye on Talis. She should be attacking from range but standing fairly close to Leopold most of the time, and only darting in to use Twin fangs when it's up.
When the 'slime arrow' lands on a party member, keep them mobile and circle the arena and letting Leopold chase them until he gives up and returns to the fight.
Prosper will eventually mound Leopold. The charges, 'slime arrows' and poison pools will continue, but he'll also place small 'firework like' items in a spiral around the arena which will eventually explode in a chain reaction. This is the most dangerous time for your party, as the AOE blast can really do a number on them. This is the time when you'll most need those potions.
It's possible to avoid the blast if you watch the direction of the explosion (it kind of goes off like a firework, starting at the edges, and moving to the middle) and move accordingly. I like to huddle my party right in the middle of the arena, and then race them into the corner once the first few 'fireworks' have exploded. Adds will also spawn which can be AOEd, and finished off using Talis.
Eventually, he'll return to the fight. Wait for another targeted 'slime arrow' to hit a party member, and run to the edge of the cliff, allowing Leopold to get stuck and partially fall. Use this time to absolutely wail on him, using all your highest damage abilities, especially Twin Fangs.
Keep it up and eventually Prosper will fall. It may take a while, but he'll go down. The only really, really dangerous part of the fight is the Mabari attack at the beginning, and the 'firework explosion' in stage three - this is when you'll probably need the most healing. Having crowd control really helps.
Needless to say this fight is far harder if you don't have a tank in your party, either Aveline or Hawke in a warrior role, and far harder if you don't have a Mage. Merril absolutely shines in this fight, as long as she's built to take advantage of her Dalish Pariah abilties.
Not sure how much help any of this will be, and I'm probably not telling you anything u you don't already know - but I help as I can.

Yeah, I knocked it down to Normal and got through it. I did have Anders for the occasional heal. Next time I definitely need to bring along some Mythal's Favors. I used up all of them right before embarking on the DLC. .
