So we know there's going to be a beta... Jonathan Warner @bio_Warner Yeah we'll have a beta! #PrepareForAdventure 7:20 pm - 26 Sep 2017
Andrew Wilson kind of referenced it in the May Investor Call, though the vagueness has generated a host of other theories. "...we will open new ways for fans to join the community and play early, enabling us to shape and refine the game with their input and feedback."files.shareholder.com/downloads/ERTS/6237188595x0x979747/4A90989B-EA4D-4CE5-905C-7361784571BB/Q4_FY18_Prepared_Remarks_-_Final.pdf
So, in the interests of speculation, what sort of beta process would be best for BioWare, the game and the community? and/or what do you think will actually happen? (based on a confirmed March 2019 launch date)

The best beta process would simply have the game up for download accessible to everyone over the course of a long weekend an cap things like lvls, story progression an dungeons, try get as many ppl in to stress test servers an hunt bugs, a typical old fashioned beta tbh
What will probably happen is a closed beta for pre-orders then a few day open beta for EA Access users

Are there any examples of games that did a beta really well (and successfully)?

I recently did the Tera online one for console an it successfully showed it was pretty buggy.
Going few year back i enjoyed the WoW beta an i suppose the game never failed.
For Anthem though i think it's a risk n a high one at that, if they do what i expect them to do it bad press an if it full open like i'd like regardless what it like there be ppl lining up to rip it to shreds.

Are there any examples of games that did a beta really well (and successfully)? I don't want to say that Destiny 1's beta was a rousing success, but to be honest, I found myself constantly logging in because the gunplay was just so much fun, and ultimately bought the game because of my time with the beta. If it does end up being available, I'll be there for Anthem's beta so I can at least get a feel for what the actual product will be like to play, and if I think it'll be the same story as it was with D1.

Let's see: "...we will open new ways for fans to join the community and play early, enabling us to shape and refine the game with their input and feedback."
(1) shape & refine via input and feedback.
(2) hdw platform is PC, PS4 & the wonder box. (3) new ways to join,
Radically speaking, connection to the game via a mobile device will help shape and refine the game mechanics but it goes against (2).... though it would be new.... assuming the game is designed for such a multi platform environment... which I believe it is not at this time.
The idea is to shake the bugs out of the game before the official launch. So, the question hangs on the early and new way to join. I'm going with the idea of "limited pool of players". Enough of them for EA to:
i) stress test game connections and lag / response times. ii) stress test the matching algorithm(s). iii) stress test co-op combat... gear and weapons. iv) test out solo play
This leave the NEW part. A possible "shake up the game Pass" for a price & for 1 month with an NDA. With this in mind the NEW could be only compliant "friend" groups are allowed to join.
EA may also have in mind that for the purpose of this early game test, applications for access is made via the WEB. Accepted applicants will become part of the "community".

I don't want to say that Destiny 1's beta was a rousing success, but to be honest, I found myself constantly logging in because the gunplay was just so much fun, and ultimately bought the game because of my time with the beta. I agree, D1's beta was handled fairly well, albeit not spectacularly. The biggest issues were how Bungie interpreted the feedback they received (and after four years they haven't gotten much better at doing that), and the fact that the vanilla game was so anemic that the beta wound up showcasing almost 20% of the content in the initial release. If Anthem's beta operates on a similar time scale to D1's, which if memory serves had three days of access for people who had keys followed by a weekend where it was open to the public, it should be satisfactory. The biggest hurdle I can see is the lack of an official forum for people to use to provide feedback, and while there's always this place or the Anthem subreddit, the traffic there is going to be much lower than it would be on an official Bioware forum.

Are there any examples of games that did a beta really well (and successfully)? I have a friend who was in the SWTOR closed beta. He said that was really well done and they listened to feedback. My guess is that they will do a limited map, open or closed beta, that is not part of the real game world, so as not to spoil things for release. They may pull a Battlefield and do a map adjacent to a real map, such that you can see parts of the real map, but can’t go there. Expect invisible walls and no-fly-zones if you try to fly there. Enemies and events will also be very limited. It will have no Hub or one that isn’t the real Hub — a remote outpost kind of thing. They may do a series of isolated maps in case they can’t test enough gameplay with one map. If the game has multiple modes, I would only expect the the main PvE coop mode to be tested.

Seeing a lot of comments using units of days. That had better be months, or at least weeks, if there is to be any chance of being stable enough to play at launch.
A better way to control spoilers is to use the limits I mentioned above. That’s what Battlefield has done. BFBC2 and BF3 betas ran for weeks, on and off. Both pretty glitchy.

Brenon Holmes said that the team is considering a PC test realm at the least. I know there are discrepencies between PC and console, but -regardless - PTR's are a great way for people to squash bugs and recommend fixes to gameplay.

I know there are discrepencies between PC and console, but -regardless - PTR's are a great way for people to squash bugs and recommend fixes to gameplay. I really hope they go forward with a PTR. By involving players in the balancing process, it's less likely that a stinker of a balance pass gets pushed out to the whole game. It's far from a magic bullet, as there's too many variables to account for, but it's a damn sight better than having nothing except the community's reactions to the latest patch to work with.
