So currently designing art work for a game that is based off the style of RPG that used to be popular on the SNES (or even 2D original playstation games like Alundra) and was wondering if anyone had some good suggestions to check out?
Obviously Secret of Mana 2 (Seiken Densetsu 3 for all you weabs out there) and Chrono Trigger are good examples but does anyone have anything else? Also if anyone has any suggestions for good soundtracks from around that era that would be helpful too.

Or anything not of that era but designed to look like they are from that era like Stardew Valley and whatnot, anything that provides a good reference point for inspiration.

SNES-era? The time period when the SNES was sold (1990-2003)?
Or more like the 4th console generation, often called the 16-bit era? Which ran from 1987 (release of the PC Engine) to 2004 (discontinuation of the Neo Geo)? Although the turning point where the next generation began to take over was in 1996.
Do you specifically mean console games, or do home computer (Amiga, Atari ST) and PC games count as well?

Do you specifically mean console games, or do home computer (Amiga, Atari ST) and PC games count as well? talking mostly about the 16bit era but it is a loose theme more about games that LOOK like they were from that era rather than specifically being from that era, so we can use include playstation one games that have a 2D pixelated art style like Symphony of the Night or even more recent games like Undertale or Stardew Valley. Mostly looking for games representative of the artstyle for my own inspiration, mostly looking at top down RPGs along the lines of Secret of Mana or Chrono Trigger but feel free to name whatever you want.

I didn't had the chance to play a lot of SNES while growing up (Nobody in my friends-circle had one. It was either crappy 286 PC, an 8-bit homecomputer like the Commodore 64, MSX, and/or ZX Spectrum; 8-bit NES, or a 16-bit Commodore Amiga, or a Sega Megadrive.) Let alone play some of these topdown (J)RPG's the SNES is so famous for. I know there are a few good supposedly ones on the Megadrive/Genesis, like Beyond Oasis, Phantasy Star IV, and Shining Force, but I haven't played them (much) yet. But '2D' games I DO know from that time period, and of which I think are good (even when some of them don't live up to modern standards, and most are sidescrollers): -Sega Megadrive/Genesis:Castlevania: Bloodlines Sonic 1, 2, 3, and Knuckles Streets of Rage 2 and 3 Eliminate Down Thunder Force IV/ Lightening Force [sic] NHL '94 Golden Axe II Battle Mania Daiginjō Ecco: Tides of Time Ghouls N Ghosts Revenge of Shinobi -NES:Super Mario Bros 3 PCStar Control 2 Dune 2 Command & Conquer (the first one) Wing Commander series Warcraft: Orcs & Humans AmigaMonkey Island 1 & 2 Pinball Fantasies The Chaos Engine Alien Breed: Tower Assault Sensible World of Soccer Lemmings 2: The Tribes Another World (Out of this World for you Americans) Flashback Eye of the Beholder 1 & 2 Indiana Jones & the Fate of Atlantis Benefactor Shadow of the Beast 1 and 3 Too many favorites... Ooh and last but not least, since I only just obtained my first Supah Nintendough (an actual '91 boxy 'murrican one, which managed to stay grey after all these years!): SNES: Yoshi's Island

I think I only ever played about 10 or 15 different SNES games, and several of them were sports games. My favorites were Super Mario World, A Link to the Past, and Final Fantasy II (the latter of which I don't think I ever managed to finish). The latter two might have been something of a landmark for me in terms of truly huge and expansive game worlds. I'd played both of the NES Zelda games, but "Link" had the Light World/Dark World dynamic, and FFII sent its characters all over the place (including to the moon at one point, I think?).

I hate you crapcom for burying this series. Given the decline of the X series after 4, it was prolly for the best tho.

If we are just talking the era, then I'd ave to say that it was PC games like Comman and Conquer: Tiberium Conflict, Warcraft 2 and a bunch of adventures like Star Trek TNG: A final Unity. If we are talking SNES games themselves, well, I never had one but at a friends place, we once spent an entire weekend playing through the Jurassic Park game. Those were good times.

Hands down the best SNES game of all time and one of the best games ever. Also pretty much the only game I enjoy watching speedrun tournaments of.

I played mostl ygames tha twere on Amiga/PC bac kthen. I do remember playing games lik eSensible Soccer a lot. Amon gothe rgames as well as many point and click adventure games like the firs tMonkey Island games I think though back then I struggled t ofiguer them out compared with now.
