My main Mage Inquisitor Nolwyn chose the Templars because she believes that anyone could help irregardless of how different they are in spite of being a Mage herself. Also, she took Solas' word about the Breach being caused by magic. She figured that who better than the Templars to negate it. She offered an alliance because she has seen good men such as Delrin Barris and believes in second chances.
My second Mage Inquisitor, Isehris chose the Mages because she believes in freedom for her fellow Mages, and that an alliance with them would empower them and give them the protection that they need. She gave an alliance offer as she didn't want to see Mages imprisoned further.
My third Mage Inquisitor, Ashaeris chose the Templars because she wanted power and influence for herself and that she could use the Chantry for her own gains . Also, she believed that Alexius was setting up a trap for her in Redcliffe and was not impressed by Fiona nor the actions of Anders. She allied with them because she figured it would be better to have the Order on her side, rather than conscription.

well first inquisitor (dalish hunter) was very open minded, he wanted to see what fiona had to say before deciding. since i always \rp when playing video game, i'd though it e too hard as i wasn't seeing how can poor lethrias (my elf) gonna pick a side. but since the venatori threat became clear and since he knew nothing about the envy demon, stopping the venatori (and and as such gong for the mages) seem the obvious choice. my female dwarf iquisitor was riding along the inquisition for profit, so she didn't really want to mix herself with the "redcliff nonsense" and like lethrias, didn't know about envy, so she went for the templars =P i have a lot of playthroughs, so i think the two above should suffice

My first run was with a female Lavellan romancing Solas so she was heavily influenced by him. As a mage she was wary of the Templars having had brushes with them in the past so she took a chance with trusting Dorian. Whilst she ended up allying with the mages she was not pleased that she could not remove Fiona as their leader. (She would have conscripted them but it was made to sound like you were making them prisoners and that by implication you approved of the Circles, which she didn't).
My second run was with a male Lavellan, who was chief scout for his clan. Initially he was willing to give the mages the benefit of the doubt and went to Redcliffe but was appalled at what he found there. The mages seemed to have sold out to Tevinter and then he found the shed with the skulls. Knowing nothing about magic himself he found Dorian's tale about time magic implausible and the mage members of his party didn't immediately advise him to accept it either. He felt he needed some magic negating back-up before confronting Alexius in his lair, so he decided the Templars were the lesser of two evils and went to them for help. He conscripted them into the Inquisition and disbanded the order. Naturally without meta-gaming or the flag on the choice, he wouldn't know that going to the Templars would preclude any further interaction with the mages. His intention was to go back to Recliffe after closing the rift and liberate it and the mages who didn't want to be indentured to Tevinter. However, in the end the mages came to him with Corypheus.

My main Lavellan (mage) chose to ally with the mages, because time-distorting magic and a Tevinter presence sounded more urgent; how was she supposed to know that she couldn't go get the Templars later? Not to mention that as a Dalish elf, she has an affinity for the underdog and thought that the mages could use the support.
My main Adaar did the same, but with less altruistic motives. She's a mage and she wanted to promote mage solidarity/support, at least in part because it would make for an easier time for herself. In her mind, supporting the Templars would just be reinforcing the society that kept her on the fringes.
My main Cadash went for the Templars because she thought they would help negate the weird Breach nonsense, plus she didn't really trust mages. When they had their own issues, she disbanded them in order to cut out the corruption and bolster support for her own cause.

My two Trevelyans allied with the mages, because they were in the Circle, and they supported the rebellion, didn't have any trust toward the Templars, and that Templars prick refused their generous offer to join.
My elven mage allied with the Mages, because 1. he's a mage. 2. he's an elf, and as an elf, he knows, that the Templars are the natural enemy. The Templars are one of their reason to wander. And he knows, what strong are the mages, and they will able to help.
My Adaar mage allied with the mages, because he's a mage. In his mercenary group were mages. Trustworthy and strong mages. He trusted the Templars almost like the Qun...
My Adaar archer allied with the mages, because the prick in Val Royeaux seems don't care about demons fall from the sky – so he went for a more capable ally – and in Redcliff, experienced, that the danger is urgent... and Dorian has nice eyes and well-shaped body.
I have a dwarf warrior – perhaps he will conscript the Templars. But he knows how dangerous is the lyrium – he met with addict Templars. A question: how trustworthy is a bunch of druggy...

Templars aren't good at PR. My Dalish wasn't fond of magic so the templars were a possible choice except for the whole punching grandma in the face. And then Fiona was an elf. My Inqui was very pro elf. A human selling their peers to slavery would have been let down like an old smelly sock in the middle of Redcliffe. But "misguided" elves need rescue. And then you don't publicly humiltiate a fellow elf in front of humans. So it was a good day for Fiona. And it had nothing to do with the mage/templar war.

My Mage Trevelyan, Vesper ended up going to Redcliffe and conscripting her 'fellow Mages' since she wanted their help but didn't believe they deserved their freedom, nor was the rebellion anyhow justified. As well, she tranquilized both Alexius and Erimond and made her stance clear that there will be no bullshit from other Mages. She was one of my favorite Inquisitors.
My Warrior Trevelyan, Nikolai on the other hand developed a crush on Dorian and wanted to help him and by an extent the other Mages for purely selfish reasons despite being a former Templar. He wanted to impress Dorian, so he offered them an Alliance.
My Rogue Trevelyan, Lyanna chose the Templars as full Allies since she had family members in the Order including her father and older brother and wanted to aide them. Also, she didn't trust Mages too much after what Anders did.

My first was a Trevelyan who went after the mages for the obvious reason: they're more powerful and versatile. Then he conscripted them when he got there because... well honestly, Fiona's actions don't inspire much faith that she should be allowed to make her own decisions.
My second was an Adaar who, oddly enough, found himself believing in the Chantry's worldview and cosmology. (Boy would he have been embarrassed if I'd played Trespasser with him, but I digress.) He went to the Templars, and accepted them as full allies rather than insisting the Order disband. (It also helped that the Templars actually fight back against Envy rather than making you and an Imperial Templar do all the work; I might not have conscripted the mages my first time through if Fiona had given me as much help as Barris had, but since the only mages who helped me were Tevinters who had nothing to do with her cause...)
My third was a Lavellan mage who didn't want restrict the mages, since he came from a culture where mages are free, and is one himself. (It helped that he met mages who didn't really approve of the Tevinter alliance.)
Past that point, I'm pretty much exclusively deciding for metagame reasons.

My first time playing, it wasn't a decision.
Templar punches a nun. Weird. Leader of the mages invites. which leads to a weird meeting with Alexius which leads to a second weird meeting with Dorian. Where he confirms Alexius is screwing with time-- sounds pretty serious Serious enough to be my #1 priority
Templars didn't present as anything close to needing my attention. It wasn't a decision of who could help Inky, but who did Inky need to focus on. Obviously, time traveling Vint mages won out over asshole hermit templars in some castle.
By the time you've met with Dorian, it also feels like this quest is good and started. Also, I just don't think most mages would think, "I need help. Better go find some of my Ex Prison Guards that have recently rebelled themselves and taken up the hobby of punching nuns." Rationalize all you want, no Dalish or Average Mage would ever think that. Mages like Viv may think that but she is definitely an exception.
The first time I picked Templars, I role played that he went to the meeting with Alexius, got the note, decided that he'd accept their decision to go to Tevinter (their life), and left without discovering the time magic from Dorian.

Two of my Mage Lavellans met with Dorian in Redcliffe and still decided to go and meet the Templars. I don't see how it is unrealistic or impossible to justify. For instance, my one Mage Ashaeris is pretty much Vivienne 2.0. So, of course she agreed with Fiona's followers being malcontents. Also, she wanted more power for herself so she went to get the Templars because having the Chantry on her side would be more beneficial than the Mage Rebellion. Secondly, Nolwyn wanted to give her fellow Mages the benefit of the doubt but didn't want to walk into what she believed was a trap and figured that this wasn't worth risking her life over. She would have conscripted them if she chose to back to Redcliffe but she figured that the Mage rebellion made it's bed and is getting what it deserves especially after what she heard of what Anders did in Kirkwall.

Things needed to be changed and they weren't going to be changed by kowtowing to Viv and the templars.

Two of my Mage Lavellans met with Dorian in Redcliffe and still decided to go and meet the Templars. I I think you're not putting yourself in their shoes if this is true? 1. Templars hunt and destroy dalish clans rooting out apostates. There is no positive connotation by which to view Templars as a Dalish person other than combatants in a centuries long Culture war. 2. Dalish have never needed Templars to help them control magic. Only Andrastians and chantry-culture raised are going to think this way. On top of it all, the narrative puts you on rails with grease to go do the mage mission. Whereas you actually have to stop, get off the narrative ride, and turn the opposite direction to go to the Templars. I'm sure whatever rationalizations you've created (pretty much metagaming to explore different outcomes) to have your Dalish go the Templar route make sense to you, and you enjoyed your PTs. But I respectfully disagree and feel it's ignoring lore.

I'm sure whatever rationalizations you've created (pretty much metagaming to explore different outcomes) to have your Dalish go the Templar route make sense to you, and you enjoyed your PTs. But I respectfully disagree and feel it's ignoring lore. Fine, but my current Lavellan truly didn't trust the rebel Mages and even if she conscripted them (which I was considering); there was no way she was going to give them freedom. She believes that the rebels have made their bed and needed to lie in it. As well, she trusts Vivienne and agrees with her on almost everything. Lore aside, she didn't want to validate the acts of people such as Anders by associating the rebels with the Inquisition. Maybe she is a bit naive but she believes in giving the Templar Order a second chance and to atone for any wrongdoings by helping the Inquisition deal with the Venatori. She felt empathy for Fiona, another Elven Mage after meeting what she believed to be her in Val Royeaux but after she learned that she indentured herself to Tevinter she noped out. It wasn't an easy decision, but she'd rather have the Templars close to her than (in her eyes) unstable, terroristic Mages. Then again, this is her perspective. As a Mage herself, not only did she not want to walk into a trap but as the Herald of Andraste she wanted to send the message that the Inquisition does not support terrorism nor did she want to bring any more distrust towards herself for being a Mage, yet an Elven Mage. She figured that she can positively influence the Templar Order by example and seeing her help to save the world may bring about a change in the Order. I head-canon her to be roughly nineteen, and as I said she can be simply naive in this view but she did what she thought was right and will live with the consequences.

As well, she trusts Vivienne and agrees with her on almost everything Naive must be right, have you explored the dialogue branches with Vivienne? She absolutely thinks what the Dalish do with their mages is bonkers and every time you defend your ways of dealing with magic even a little bit, she disapproves. My one Dalish character I've played, I wasn't even going out of my way to piss her off, and that Dalish Mage got his furniture moved by her.

I chose the Mages the first time without metagaming. As mentioned before the mages actually offered to meet with us while the Templars didn't want anything to do with us, and then after meeting the mages and learning what Alexius' plan was that seemed much more urgent to stop then creating a meeting with the Templars (since we don't know the urgency there until after we arrive).

My Inquisitor is a Trev warrior who doesn't know anything about magic and had never even met a mage before the Conclave. I'll fully admit that Dorian has a great deal to do with it. He comes across very well during the encounter in the Redcliffe Chantry: intelligent, competent, friendly, and reliable. Besides, the occurrence of meeting Tevinters (counting Felix as well) who want to fight against their own homeland doesn't seem that far-fetched when you consider all of the bizarre happenings up until that point. Aside from Dorian, Felix has his own impact as well, as he comes across as genuine. Because my Inquisitor has that initial interest, and trusts Dorian, he believes what he says about the threat and the urgency in taking action against it. On top of it all, the narrative puts you on rails with grease to go do the mage mission. Whereas you actually have to stop, get off the narrative ride, and turn the opposite direction to go to the Templars. Meh, you can come up with an RP rationale for anything. Mine basically goes like this: go to Redcliffe, learn about the time magic from Dorian, and think, "This is fucking insane. We need the templars and their anti-magic skills to combat this." So we go and get the templars, not knowing that it will be too late to do anything with the mages after that point. If we're talking strictly RP, which means ignoring UI cues like the war table warning you can only choose one side, it should also be noted that if you take only the templar dialogue path you do NOT get a conversation warning that it will be too late to deal with the mages afterward. This is a contrast to the mage conversation which does have those options.

Poor Anders... he not even can heal: (But killing Templars with blood magic is very satisfying... and become Champion of Kirkwall as a maleficar!)

And the Templars are "natural" enemies of the elven clans. snip Two of my Mage Lavellans are best friends with Vivienne and even made her Divine. And also married Cullen. Viv is horrible (IMO) and I can never support her in any way. I do have a mage that married Cullen but he's changed over the years and all my Inqs become friends with him. Some of my Inqs manage not to totally alienate Viv but none of them try to gain her favor. I have had two that she really liked, not mages of course, but that was an accident of picking answers that didn't make her rage.

I supported (allied) with the Templars.
When it comes down to it: The Breach is a Fade Rift. A colossal one, to be sure, but it's a fade rift. This is proven through the Codex (which is written in game). As such, I would want the help of people who can deal with Fade Rifts. Inquisition tells us exactly how Templars work: They reinforce the waking world, driving back the Fade. As such, that would allow the Anchor to do its work.
Plus, the mages can't handle anything related to freedom or power. We saw several times how behaved and trained mages can leave the Circle: Wynne, Bethany, Vivienne. These mages did not get it. Why? Because they couldn't handle their power. Because they constantly try to kill people. Because they killed their fellows who didn't want to help. The templars had the excuse of red lyrium. Those who aren't controlled by Corypheus with it are completely insane. The mages, by contrast, have no excuse.

I always metagame this decision. Am I romancing Sera, so I'll want to see her in Future Redcliffe? Would I rather see Calpernia later on? If I sided with the mages (with caveats) in DA2, should I side with the templars in DAI (by disbanding them)? Do I reeeaally have to say it's an HONOR to ally with the mages. :srs: I love Felix - do I want to see him? But Cole's intro is so much better on the templar path, and I love the idea of being almost-possessed! But the Bad Future is so haunting, hnnng... but I prefer the Venatori as antagonists! Basically I choose based on the above, and then I come up with an RP reason for it. My mage Adaar has allied with the mages, conscripted them, and disbanded the templars all on different runs. She goes with the templars because there's some fucked up Tevinter shit happening in Redcliffe and she got the hell out of Dodge and went to get her a disciplined military force, with the bonus of disbanding what they used to stand for. She's also gone with the mages under the justification that everyone deserves a chance to try to be free and live peacefully, like her Tal-Vashoth parents, and that the mages as a whole shouldn't be punished for Fiona's poor decisions.
