I've been playing DAO since the beginning, but I've never known which mage defensive sustain to use most of the time: arcane shield or rock armor. I suppose it comes down to whether defense (from arcane shield) or armor (from rock armor) is best for a squishy mage.

Arcane shield has the spiffier graphics. Rock armor makes any mage look wrinkly. It's hard to fight evil and darkspawn when you aren't looking your best.

Arcane Shield scales quite a bit which makes it the better option.

There's always Combat Magic when you get the Fade Shroud passive.

I recently started a mage run on DAO. Never played that before, typically going for rogue, or even warrior. I'm really clueless on how to be a mage. It's taking some work, but I guess that's the point of trying out different classes and races.

The passive spells take a portion of your mana, so optimal solution may be to take none of the defensive spells, and instead spam damage-dealing spells all the time. Unless you're going Arcane Warrior, in which case, take all of the defensive spells and be neigh un-killable.

Fireball I am going to be bumping old threads I guess. The answer is of course "it depends" just like it almost always is in this game. What is your relative amount of defense and armor currently? I do agree that Arcane Shield is better from the standpoint of better scaling with spellpower, and given that most mages won't usually have huge armor rating, the buff from Rock Armor might not always be useful. Rock Armor caps at 12.25 and Arcane Shield has no cap if I recall. Like with most sustains it is helpful if you don't turn them on until you blow mana with your activated spells, although with the right nuking you might not even need them.

I don't use any of 'em, unless I'm playing an Arcane Warrior. Attack is the best form of defense, and a sustained defensive ability uses up mana that'd I'd prefer to save for nuking the living crap out of something. A dead enemy requires no defense against.
