First, credit due to a great Reddit post by a poster called Lutenus entitled: " Hope Anthem Game Concept is not about ". This raises a few issues to unpack: - In a persistent world, how exciting or irritating are events that 'happen' if you as a player have 'real life' activities that prevent participation?
- How can such events be presented to maximize the joy and minimize frustration, both for more invested and more casual players?
- How would such events be recorded, would a log of achievements such as the N7 Manifest be a good idea? (example).
- How could such a log disinvest people, such as by recording challenges they did not complete, and how could that be addressed?
- Finally, referencing the cited post, does a challenge system generate an addiction or 'fear' or missing content and how may that be addressed?
What do you reckon?
What are the best ways to have 'events and challenges' and how should they be tracked?

My hope would be that most “live” challenges are recurring events.
This is something I like about Destiny. Iron Banner and Faction rallies have shortcomings, but they repeat monthly and you get more chances to do things when they come up again.

BioWare does have experience with this kind of thing with the multiplayer weekend events for their last three games. So I am not worried for me at least I never felt like I was left out if I missed a weekend.

Here's what not to do, to avoid Skinner Boxing them and making them exploitative. - Schedule them totally randomly
- Worse, schedule the best ones, by popularity or loot dropped, randomly
- Force everyone into them by way of a key content or progression lock, e.g., you are level capped at 20 unless you complete one of these things.
- Penalize people (too harshly) for dropping out of them. I mean, sometimes the phone rings and you have to bail your bro out of jail -- shit happens
- Make it so you have to play every day, or some other mandatory and frequent rate, to qualify
- Introduce a mystery award that is only known after the event is completed -- so you are forced to go in on a hope and a prayer
In sum, design it so that if you don't make conforming to the game's schedule and play hours rate a top priority, you miss out. Information hiding is generally bad too, though some amount of hiding for the sake of surprise and suspense wouldn't be. It's a thin line.

Events will be most likely recurring. Just look at SWTOR for instance.

Events will be most likely recurring. Just look at SWTOR for instance. Let's hope so. In all the years I've been playing SWTOR I've hardly ever touched the weekly events, or however long they run for. The exception being during KotFE when you have to wait for the Rakgual event to fire to recruit a certain NPC. That was a much better design choice than forcing you to PvP to get another recruitable NPC. I've never PvP'd in SWTOR and never will.

Short answer is life goes on without you. There are no replay factors in the game. The idea, here, is to take what you can get when yo are able to play.
Personally, "living" is always better than "existing in a game world".

I don't really know the correct answer but I'd say do it different from SWTOR. I found everything outside the class stories either frustrating or boring as F.

He can wait. If he makes you miss a rare drop, he deserves some sweet prison luvin'.
Kidding aside, I agree with all your points, though. I myself am now a fully grown adult with adult responsibilites and an adult shortage of time. (I hate that this happened ) I can not say when I'll be one next, and even then, it will never be for long. If there is some sort of event which you need to grind 20 times to get something out of, or happens randomly, or only at set times, this frustrates me. If it's cosmetic, I usually don't care, but if it's some cool equipment, that kind of stings.
I would rather they make a mission event where extra rewards like exp or gold is boosted, and afterwards the mission (and loot) is still available, but the extra rewards are gone. Then, when they want to promote a new event or mission, the rewards/exp go up on that one, which after it ends stays available but without extra rewards. And like that keep the circle going.
NO RANDOM BULLSH!T
