I went with "No" but could have just as easily went with "don't care/where's my paycheck?"
I have been working at an eatery not far from my folks' house (where I'm unfortunately still living at the moment) for the past month. I graduated from Uni at the end of last year with 3 mostly-useless degrees (BA psych, BA pol-sci, Minor biz-admin) and have bounced around a bit in my first full year out of it.
Honestly, there's a lot for me to like about it. It's a short, easy commute. I have experience in this industry and feel pretty at-home being back. It gives me a bi-weekly check and the pay is reasonable for the work. I get to eat decent food at a sizable discount and can raid the bakery (FREE STUFF YAYY!!!) a few nights a week. It gets me out of the house and keeps me occupied for a bit, both of which are useful for keeping depression at bay. The work can be seen as un-stimulating and repetitive, but part of me finds comfort -- even authority/agency -- in the familiar. Hell, on some parts of the job I can play music while working. And so far pretty much all my shifts have been PM, so even my horrible sleep habits have not been disturbed much. ^^
So I don't mind this job whatsoever, basically like it. I just can't call it a "good" job because it's not my "calling" in the world.

I have no job this week. I have worked every day. I like this job better - do stuff that needs doing, and maybe get creative. Organize shit. If I could afford my rate, I would pay me to do this forever. Beerfish, lend me some coin so I can become a master of leisure like yourself. I pledge myself to your teachings, my master! I "fell" into my job about a year ago. I work for an electric car company as quality control and I love it! Challenging and different with a mission statement I'm proud to support. I feel incredibly fortunate I am where I am.

In capitalism, there is no such thing as a good job. It'a about time to immigrate to Venezuela. Bolsonaro will show the suckers who's the boss. Yeah, he is already showing a lot of things: appointing corrupt ministers, showing he lied about his tax promises (he is increasing taxes), reforming social security so it will be the same model of Chile (which has a record of suicidal rate among old people), practicing nepotism... And, of course, the military won't be included on this reform. Yeah, in 13 days even his electors are surprised with all he is doing.

It's not a ProBoards issue (there's a politics thread on another ProBoards forum) but we've got censorship at work here. If we had an appropriate thread no one would bring up politics here.

Okay, for my job. Been unemployed for almost two months. Keep applying for jobs. Going to stop by a local school to see if I can become a substitute teacher. I did that in NYC nine or ten years ago and it didn't last long. I'm in a less metropolitan area so it might not be the shit show that is NYC.

Really... What is a good job? One you don't dread doing will suffice; one you actually look forward to doing is ideal. Had. I've worked at three movie theaters and for the most part I've loved working at all of them. I started as a peon (usher) and worked my way up, at my last theater I was the Evil Omnipotent Theater Manager and only left so that I could be with the Krogan. I started working at my first theater because I loved movies, but quickly became indifferent toward the movies and fell in love with the work itself...to the point of learning projection on my own time. My colleagues…I miss most of them…not all, but most. That said, the question for me was whether my staff considered their job at the theater I managed a “good job”. I think they did and I offer the following as possible proof… - Employees moved, left for college or boot camp (then Fallujah), but they never quit because of myself or the work. - This is an excerpt (name of theater removed) from an article titled Ticket, Please A Weekend at the Movies: Eight Theatres, 52 hours, York County Coast Star, Oct. 3, 2003: "What XXXXX has over other any other theater, though, is its staff, which is the friendliest and most courteous. They clearly enjoy what they do, and that helps increase one's enjoyment of the overall moviegoing experience. Ever since they opened several years ago, XXXXX has had consistently top-notch staff. Kudos to the manager for hiring and retaining such a great group."

^^^ That's a strong endorsement I really enjoyed managing a bicycle shop. Cycleworks Marietta had been a failed venture for it's entire history before I got there. It closed doors two years after I left the company (after having been promoted to GM of all stores). During my time there as manager, I learned a great deal about merchandising, reading your local market, and developing a niche. Kids were bringing in their bikes for repair all the time. Not young children, kids with their own money, ages 12-16 mostly. They were all focused on whatever trendy new brand the magazines were offering, and of course some of the old staples I used to want when I was their age (Profile cranks, for instance.) So... I talked to my vendors, made a new vendor relationship, and started selling BMX parts. In less than a year the store was turning a profit. Just took paying a little attention, focusing the store on a portion of the market, and reaping the rewards. It helped that I hired amazing people, and that we all got along well and made each other look good. That was the last job I honestly enjoyed... It didn't pay enough, so I took the promotion and ended up hating my job because I was no longer in the shop, and instead just a bean counter. Now I do jobs I hate for money that makes it worthwhile. A mercenary. It's gross, but that's where we're at

Sundance31us I too worked in a small local movie theater for a few years, part time during college. It was my first job (yes, I grew up spoiled, no need for a few extra bucks as a teenager). It greatly helped me build up confidence and I really enjoyed the work. I too learned a lot about the business. I worked there JUST before it all went digital. All of the staff were college students or teenagers whose job was "everything", from selling tickets and making popcorn, to cleaning up puke to checking the film rolls for flaws, cutting out broken parts, putting the heavy film rolls on the trays, starting the film, and doing the end of day money counting and closing up.
We could run the whole theater by ourselves. The owner was gone half of the time. We were a bit like family. If he had any private problems we could go him and his wife. They lived 5 minutes away. People all loved the place. It was a bit rundown, one projector was a bit blurry but it was always busy. However, 3D basically ruined the owner because he couldn't afford upgrading. Most of the money was made on kids movies and now when a movie was 3D, some families would go elsewhere to actually see it in 3D. The government stopped supporting local business such as this one and he was forced to close down.
People were outraged and wanted it back running. A Swiss businessman bought it and spent the money for the digital upgrade. New seats too, new screens. The staff was mostly rehired. I still know a few of the faces (some of the youngest are now in college) when I go to see a movie. It's busier than ever. And I'm glad there's still an option for people in my area to see a movie without having to drive an hour into the big city and spend at least twice as much money.

I have asked the moderators to prune some off-topic posts that don't belong here. It is a nice thread. People are discussing their lives, not forum topics of the past. As valid as those discussions may be, this is not the place for it. .... On topic - I start my first "full-time" job of the year this week. Working on a really old show that's been around since I was in high school. Not my favorite company to work for, but the checks always cash. It is, as always, a means to an end. I am not smart enough to invest; something just feels gross. So, I actually work for a living, but I do work to live and not vice versa. Finally! It is a small victory over life, but I have to take each one and celebrate it a little

This is 100% my fault and please don't blame the mods for this. We can't have anything nice without some gardening. Just have to avoid spraying everything with RoundUp! ... On-topic - is anyone an amateur/professional landscaper/lawn enthusiast? I guess I'll go to the gardening thread, but I am looking for some zoysia advice for my spring broadleaf control. I have my own weeds to prune :rage:

Qui-Gon GlenN7 “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” ~ TR I was working in the call center for an electric company in Maine when a call came through...the caller had entered the account number via the phone, so the account popped on my screen immediately. I clicked the information tab to verify that I was speaking to an authorized account holder...the only name on the account was that of a woman, but the voice I heard was male. He made it clear that the account wasn't his and that he had gotten it off a disconnect notice on his neighbor's door. His neighbor was a kind elderly woman who was living hand to mouth and he couldn't just let her power be shut off without trying to help. As he was explaining the situation I sat back and considered how I could help without violating any rules... I explained that according to government regulations I couldn't discuss the details of the account with him because he wasn't listed on the account, but that I could answer general questions. There was a pause and he asked if he could make a payment on her account even if it wasn't his. I told him that anyone could make a payment on any account as long as they had the account number and that the fastest way to have a payment was to go to the service desk of the local grocery store. He was relieved and said that he planned to make a payment of $100 as soon as we finished talking. His payment wouldn't remove the disconnect notice, so I said "that'll help"...he asked if would take care of the notice....I said "it'll help". He picked up on what I was doing and started increasing the amount until I finally said "Excellent, I'll make a note on the account that you'll be paying $XXX today and to make sure he let his neighbor know about the payment. He said he planned to put the payment receipt on her door with a note, so that she could see it. After the call I printed the account's summary screen to make sure everything happened as discussed...it did.

My job has grown into caring in ways no one will appreciate, and will never notice. Electrical safety is pretty boring unless you fail But electrical safety is so important... The electric company I worked for hadn't had a fatality in over a decade...I was working the day that changed. There were three call centers and each one was taken out of the queue and told everything. It was a windy day in early fall and not surprisingly a line came down in a small, tight-knit town in southern Maine. When the lineman arrived a group of kids pointed him toward where they'd seen the wire...the location was two blocks from where the lineman lived with his wife and child. He walked over to the wire and without putting his gloves on picked it up...and that was it.

The saddest call...
Same company as before. It was the first full week after the New Year when the call came through, the account loaded, salutations..."for security purposes may I please verify who I'm speaking to". Last name matched, but the first name didn't. As I started to explain that I couldn't discuss the account he cut me off saying that it was his son's account and that he wanted to close it. I apologized and told him that I couldn't do that and then he explained what happened.
His son and a friend were to attend the USM for the spring session and had moved into an apartment back in December. Over the holiday weekend his son was killed by a drunk driver. As I listened I could hear from his breathing that he was trying to control his emotions. It had been less than a month since the account was opened.
Government regulations forbade me from changing the account without proof that the account holder was deceased, but the last thing I wanted to do was to add to this man's misery by asking him to prove that his son was dead.
The roommate was listed on the account, so I said gently "<roommate’s first name> will need to call in and take over the account" he said the roommate would be calling by the end of the week to do just that. That was my out, I noted the changes requested and once the roommate contacted us he could authorize them...if the roommate didn't call by the end of the week I intend to call him.
I then explained that I had the power to wave fees and asked if I could do so one the account. He was silent for a long time and then he took a deep breath and said, "Thank you, but I want to pay my son's bill." His voice broke when he said "son" and I almost lost it.
I told him that I understood and that I would watch the account to make sure the transition occurred smoothly and without any additional charges; he said that's what he wanted. I asked if there was anything else I could do and the call ended. The roommate called two days later and everything happened as the father had wanted.

Wow.... That's a job well done, and you achieved good with it, but I don't know in that moment that I would call that job good, even if it was a job that was worth doing and needed it.
I have lost some friends to this work. I have saved at least one life; the situation could have been catastrophic so in truth besides his and my life, not sure how many others could have been harmed. He would have been a sizzling bloody grease spot.
