I thought to share this in the Cullen Appreciation Thread, but the post got a bit bigger than expected.
Instead of telling my own tale of loving Mr Perfect Rutherford, I will tell my mom's story. She doesn't mind.
In her 50ies, she was never a gamer, even claiming I spent too much time with an unhealthy obsession (I admit I may or may not spend too much time dragon ageing...)
She has been a widow since a couple of years, not actively engaged in dating anyone new. In fact, Cullen was the first one who after a long time of isolation reignited a sparkle in her heart.
It began when I shared screenshots from a playthrough with her. Mostly it was about the advanced graphics, but I also mentioned how touching his story was, and that it was one of the main reasons for my fascination with DA.
We looked at a couple of romance videos (spoilers, I know), this particular one she liked best and also how I introduced her to Nightwish:
And there we were - I guided my mom step by step through the game, taking care of the fights myself at first and leaving the conversations to her, and slowly letting her take over the joystick. Mom liked archers immediately.
Using her own words - she got to love fierce Cassandra, big-hearted Varric and idealist Dorian the most, and had a lot of respect for Solas, "wise but deceitful". (She still doesn't understand why I would romance him over and over again, as well as Blackwall, since both lied to me). Ah, and of course there's gentle Josie and sensitive Morrigan that she loved talking to. Morrigan she considers a romantic btw, which is kind of true.
But no one has beaten Cullen. She must have romanced him at least three times now. He even adorns her laptop screen. Quiet, loving, shy, sweet, golden she calls him. I promised her that if we get a red kitten, I would name him Cullen. (I got a black one, Thorin, but he needs a playmate!)
Most importantly, Cullen was a breakthrough. Yes, I know, it's difficult to talk to strangers about your parent's love life, but we're all brothers and sisters in Thedas, right?
Soon after getting to know Cullen, she dared after years of solitude to open up and meet an exciting real life man. Though he does not look alike at all, and is almost twice as old as Curly, I think the first push came from the fictional romance. Opening up to a new experience of gaming, to a virtual love and then to one outside of Thedas.
Ah, and she has taken up gaming as a hobby now. Skyrim it is currently, and grandma Shirley is my mom's hero (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzkY7wa8Ksxv4M5NyUYgTmA).
Just thought to share the cuteness. Any heart warming stories from your side?

This is why we need more single player games like DA and Skyrim, and not more of that multiplayer battle royale crap where people only bully each other. These kinds of stories is what gaming is about, for me

You're a great daughter you know that? I think I'd go a little crazy trying to teach my Mum to play a video game. But then she can't even work the tv... Anyway give your Mum a high five from me. Have you linked this page to the Cullen thread? You should, they'd love to read it.

Awwww that's a beautiful story I got to meet a friend (online) because of DAI discussions, crying while drawing fanarts together. I still talk to her years afterward and glad to be able to call her friend.
