The original Sarah Conner Linda Hamilton is back yes, but that womanlet on the far left has to be at least 4ft 10, and the dude in the middle better not be John Conner because he looks like he wouldn't last 10 minutes in a county jail.

Not to mock those that took a long time to glom on to this, but James Cameron made the Terminator movies from a feminist perspective from the start.
Linda Hamilton's performance in Terminator 2 is often cited (incorrectly) as the first successful modern female action hero. Every Terminator film has featured at least one major female character who demonstrated not only strength, but genuine agency (something that was truly rare in action films from the 1980s and 1990s.)
Note: I am not a feminist, nor do I have an opinion about the new film. I'm just pointing out that Sinful is over thirty years too late in his attempt to generate controversy over this.

Who do you consider the first successful modern female action hero? Weaver as Ripley? I wouldn't claim to have a definitive answer, but Ripley and a few others predate T2. Sigourney Weaver is a legitimite candidate, as the earlier examples would probably be considered "problematic" (for example, Jane Fonda as Barbarella or Raquel Welch in a fur bikini.) Personally, I feel that Geena Davis doesn't get enough credit. Sure, Cutthroat island sucked, but The Long Kiss Goodnight was really well made, and seriously overlooked by film buffs. It also predated the late nineties explosion of female action heroes, and I'm quite convinced both films went a long way to opening the door for Sarah Michelle Gellar and Lucy Lawless.

Lol, I thought of mentioning Barbarella, but that character played on sex too much to really be considered modern imo. I agree with Geena Davis, but that excellent film you mentioned was a bit later. Lucy Lawless is a Cylon. How is she not in this movie? (Hear me as Nicholas Cage asking that)

So, Jane AustenInteresting Let us refine the medium to theatrical releases. Also, let us define modern action hero - self-sufficient badass that can adapt to many situations and find a way to overcome. That gives us these possibilities (I am sure there are more, but this is what I think of immediately) for a precedence setter: Leia Angie Dickinson Ripley Linda from T1 Each has their own merits and specialty. Ripley is the one I admire most. Sarah Connor had to grow quickly, and she did... Her journey in T1 is remarkable.

Eastern cinema is often overlooked but the first female action stars i remember watching were Cheng Pei, Kara Hui, Cynthia Rothrock and Michelle Yeoh.
Before anyone says anything about the eastern actresses not playing recurring characters, they displayed the same character traits in the majority of their roles like Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li.

Every Terminator film has featured at least one major female character who demonstrated not only strength, but genuine agency (something that was truly rare in action films from the 1980s and 1990s.) Sadly, the only cool and believable female action hero lead to this day has always been Ripley from the Alien movies. Heck, if you made cinematic stuff back in the early 80's with a female action hero lead and it wasn't a parody but actually a very good series of films people of all genders loved you did it damn right. And still to this day its the best. Even in the very mediocre movie that is loosely attached to the Alien universe, Alien Covenant, the female lead was somewhat plausible and not inaptly tacked onto the movie like everywhere else because WOMENZ. Now with every franchise having token women tacked onto them, or having one half-arsed action/super hero movie after another falling of the conveyor with mediocre actresses going full blown '' Empower women!'' shtick they are giving good women leads a bad name. In fact, the whole Hollywood agenda has mostly been an utter disaster in quality, acting, story etc. I'd even go so far as to say Hollywood is actively weakening the whole movement with their inapt and ham fisted attempts, dragging female leading roles in action movies into the absurd.

I'm not sure if citing examples would accomplish much more than debating said examples, so I'll just say I strongly disagree with this (while acknowledging that examples are rare prior to 2000.)

I saw this movie is just ignoring all the Terminator films after Judgement Day. Yes, James Cameron is getting the Terminator franchise back and wants to do it justice now that daddy's home. Pity he's busy on the new Avatar movies, so he's hired someone else to direct. Someone that seems capable enough (Deadpool 1 director) and recall reading James Cameron was heavily involved with the scrip writers.
