I've just started playing this game and as a completionist, I'm trying to get everything I can done on a map before I leave. I've come across a building with a gate, although I've no idea how to open the gate. The building/gate in question is at number 16 on the map I've linked in this thread. I went on a location guide site and it says that there are consoles nearby which will open the gate, although having searched for half an hour I can't find them anywhere.
Also, do 'points of interest' turn blue when they've been explored? I've been to several points of interest on the map, and looted/scanned everything, although they're still appearing white.
Would appreciate some help, thanks.

I know that if you walk past the gate there is sometimes an alarm and some Kett come out, but can't remember if you can enter the gate behind them. But at point 18 you can climb up the rock via jet jumps and get into the area that way. Then there is a big force field in the area which you can't pass until later. There isn't much to see in the area you can enter but once your done walking around, there should be some consoles by the gate which you can activate and leave the area through the gate.
As for the points, those don't turn blue. There are other icons later that change colors, but these one stay the same no matter how much you dig around.
EDIT: Okay so checked it out. The first door of the gate opens if you trigger the alarm, the second does not and you can't open it. But you can still get in the area by jumping over the rocks on point 18. Then you get to a small area and there is a building further in, but you're blocked by a blue force field. You can't pass the force field until later in the story and I don't think there is any loot in the area you can access. Since you can't jump up from where you came from, the consoles for the gate are suddenly usable and you can exit through the gate and continue on with the story. If you go straight to point 18 without triggering the alarm then I'm pretty sure it wont be triggered when you walk past the gate later.

Is it a doorway? If it's the one I'm thinking of it doesn't activate till later in the main quest line.

The area is a secured one that the story brings you back to a little later. You can jump down from the cave/cliff mentioned by Curious Crow . This will change some of the dialogue a little later on. AFAIK, there is no other effect on the story, no loot in that area, and no XP gained. In fact, you can wind up with less XP because walking by the gate without entering the area will spawn a patrol of kett, while entering the area and exiting out the gate will prevent them from spawning. To get them to spawn as well, you would then have to leave the area by backtracking a bit and re-entering it. Moving forward generally moves you into an area where you meet up with Cora... which advances the story and makes the areas you explored earlier inaccessible. 100% completion is a little arbitrary, since the dialogue and the story adapts differently depending on what you've done and haven't done just as much as it adapts depending on what dialogue selections you make. If you do explore every area, you're missing out on the dialogue that is based on your not doing some of the things on the planet. In most cases, sites that have been fully cleared will turn blue. There are a few in the game that do seem to be bugged and will stay white even after they have been cleared, but that amounts to maybe 2 or 3 and only on 2 or 3 planets. (Sorry, I can't get more specific without spoilers. If you don't mind being spoiled read on.) If you don't find Greer, there will be additional dialogue involving what happened to him when you do get to enter that Kett base. If you do find Greer, you may encounter him later on the Nexus (which is the space station established by the Initiative).
Also, if you don't explore the planet and don't find the cave and/or the Kett research station, your father's reaction to what you done changes.

I find in BioWare games 100% completion, for me personally, is a few different playthroughs making different choices. I won't explore everything in one run, I'll spread it out so that I can say I've done it all over 3 or 4 worlds. That lets me explore different romances, consequences and dialogue trees. Yeah that's how I play too.

I guess I was such a completionist I did not realise dialogue changes depending on your research on habitat 7, like I was not aware you could get shot on aya if you don't follow the orders of the anagara guards before someone told me.
