So, I'm making this thread. I focus too much on mShenko in Kaidan's thread so thought this might be appropriate. If any moderator of poster has a problem with it, feel free to bring it up and we'll discuss it.

welll...opinions differ but... seeing as I got into Mass Effect from 2 before playing the first one, I romanced Jacob first time around (god that was a mistake ) then I went to play the first Mass Effect and well...Kaidan just won me over with his adorable stuttering and overall nice guy personality haven't romanced anyone else ever since
so yeah, for me he's the best romance option of the Mass Effect trilogy, at least for my female ones
as for my male Shepards, I only did a male playthrough once...didn't even finish the trilogy with him...romanced Liara (I really don't like Liara...) might do another male playthrough at some point
I make a point of playing through Bioware games at least twice so that I can do both a male and a female playthrough, but making male characters is so hard (I can never decide on an appearance I like)

You ever romanced Garrus dmc? Cos he's the best I always play as male Shepard. I think the s/s mod might allow for it but I'm not sure. If it does, not sure how well it imports to ME3.

I always play as male Shepard. I think the s/s mod might allow for it but I'm not sure. If it does, not sure how well it imports to ME3. Ah that's a shame, it's one of Bioware's best. I always played female characters, it felt weird to be a guy but then I realised I'd played Adam Jensen with no problems. Male Shep was my first and I've had another since, then a male Inq for Dorian. It's not quite the same but still worth it. Like you, it's difficult to play as the opposite sex. Lots of [primarily] straight guys seem to love playing FemShep. To me, it's weird, but everyone plays as they see fit. I'd probably have to make a new ME2 FemShep for this to happen.

You popped your ME cherry with Jacob? Oh you poor baby. I'd recommend Garrus for femShep if you'd ever fancy a pointy kitty faced alien. I romanced Ash then Miri then Ash again with one of my guys, it was a rollercoaster but actually Ash and mShep have great voice acting in ME3, there's chemistry there. Tali didn't really impress me in ME3 but many disagree. I heard it said that Liara is better with femShep so I went with that, it was good but ehhhh not my favourite. Check out this thread, I put the codes for my guys in the first post - bsn.boards.net/thread/374/share-shepard-me1-me2-me3Yeah...he was a nice guy...my characters always tend to go with nice guys (Fenris being a slight exception ) I'm glad I didn't keep him though...damnable cheater Jacob: it has been half a year Shepard...sorry
Shepard: ...Kaidan waited for two years, while he thought I was dead!
I do like kitties ...and I do like Garrus, but to me he feels more like a big brother to my Shepard then anything else
as for Male Shepard...aside from everyone's fan favorite Tali, who'd you say would be a good option for Male Shep? I'm not a fan of Liara (as I've stated several times), and Ashley is...well, I just don't find her very interesting, maybe she gets more interesting in the third game but...well
for my Dragon Age male characters the romance options are a lot clearer in Origins > Morrigan in DA 2 > Isabela I don't have on yet for Inquisition, but I'm dubbing between either Cassandra or Dorian
and thanks for the codes, I'll take a look

and thanks for the codes, I'll take a look Miranda or Jack if you don't like Ash. Jack has less content but I've heard good things, and Miri is easy to kill so be careful. Ash has very little content tbh. easy to kill? Ah you mean Miranda's ME3 arc? I always just tend to help her out since I'm always 99% paragon (my Shepard being the Queen of the Girl-scouts as Jack would put it) and she tends to make it out alive might give her a try once I get around to doing my male playthrough of the trilogy
I've watched most (if not all) romances on Youtube at some point or another, so I do know a little of what to expect

Kay is Perfect. He's My favourite character in Mass Edfect trilogy and the best LI, in my opinion. I expecially love him with mShepard, but I've romances him with fShepard too and I loved them. (My final couple are mShenko and fShakarian, btw!)

Kaidan is my favorite character of the MET. I specifically made this Shenko + mShenko because I'm known for being full-on mShenko. I just didn't want to exclude anyone who might love (or not ) regardless of which Shepard is played.

My condolences for Jacob. My first run was with a femshep and I almost romanced him too since I turned down Kaidan in ME1. But there was a line Jacob said in ME2 that made me not go through with it. He says "he likes it light." That's when I knew he may not be the best choice. As for the males romances, I don't think you can go wrong with any of them (besides Liara because she's a terrible character). I personally prefer the humans for Shepard. And they are all good. Jack gets little content, but gets some the best scenes in the series (especially with Citadel DLC). Miranda's arc is a bit weaker and her character is a bit more subtle compared to the rest. She doesn't pour it on as thick as say Tali and Liara. But I appreciate that and it makes her unique. Ash feels like the best fit for broshep, but what content you get is unfortunately inferior to the other Virmire survivor (who frankly does and says a lot more interesting things regardless of whether you romanced him or not). Ash is great in ME1, but noticeably weaker in ME3. I still think its solid though. But on topic, I agree that Kaidan's romance is the strongest in the series. I haven't done the male Shepard one as it doesn't interest me. But he is definitely the strongest all around because he fits with any gender and sexuality well. Great character all around.

While Kaidan isn't my favorite LI for Shepard, that being Kelly, I'd say he is in the Top 5 at least.

I'd be careful with this types of "best romance ever" threads. I respect everyone to have their own preferences and generally hate "My ship is better than yours" wars. Since this is an RPG, you can choose love interests, reactions and interpret them accordingly. Therefore, everyone's preferences is right and don't get offended... okay, savvy..
I do view Shenko and mShenko as separate experiences (modded or unmodded); like the Kaidan my FemShep love is not the same as the Kaidan that BroShep love. Even with shared identical dialogues; the perspective isn't the same. FemShep and BroShep isn't the same person with different set of genitals. Kaidan love both of them as their own person, which is a really good thing.
I found that generally people tend to focus on Kaidan as a character; view him as being too basic and too boring and not being flashy or interesting enough but forget that character alone is not how relationship work. You need more than provide a love interest, you have to make the romance work as a love story. I do play Dragon Age, Jade Empire and The Old Republic so I've played my share of video game romances. Personally, I do find Kaidan romance to be the most well-written romance in the trilogy; especially for a video game.

I actually found a really interesting post on tumblr the other day that explained why people thought Kaidan was boring, and what actually made him interesting
and after reading that post I was like...wait, that exactly what's going on! He's 'boring' because he wants to be normal, because he wants to be understood and with extension cared about (whether as a lover or just a friend is beside the point)
his comment during the romance arc "you make me feel human", makes a lot of sense if you understand his mind set plus, I find Kaidan very interesting as a character, him being romancable is just a plus point...a big dorky adorable plus point

LadyofNemesis: Never quite got the boring part. Reserved, sure, but not boring. I did pick up on the part where he was holding back right from the start. I also noticed in ME3 how Kaidan was doing things impossible for your average human biotic. Thanks for the link, though. It's now reblogged to my own tumblr.

I believe there's even a part where Kaidan actually says: uhm...I can reave now though I don't recall when or where that was (either during the Citadel party or...somewhere else) Edit: found it on the wikia, it's during the Citadel party when talking to James, Miranda, Liara and Jacob about biotics vs. physical strength
as for Kaidan being reserved, it's what I liked about him...I'm not a very open person myself, and open up slowly (though it depends on what kind of 'vibe' a person has, if it's one that feels safe I open up more easily) so yeah, Kaidan is reserved, but it's an aspect that I like about him and I never found him boring ...Ashley on the other hand, while I understand her motives and her dislike of aliens, I never felt able to open up to her or like her all that much *shrugs*

LadyofNemesis Indeed, I myself was slow to notice that it was intentional that he's portrayed to be normal and unflashy. He's a freak of nature. A high-tiered male biotic in a galaxy where most of advanced biotics are Asari. He's powerful enough as a teenager to kill a Turian war veteran in a time where nobody actually understand what human biotics capabilities was. Its also emphasized that he's not a psychopath nor a sadist, he doesn't want to hurt people but he will when it's needed. But it's one of the layered depth in his character that I find him interesting as time goes by. I love that he contrast with SWTOR's Arcann (my all-time obsession) who is more like Kaidan unleashed but was forced to numb down his humanity to nearly be a monster. They're both powerful men who at their core have strong belief and principle. The difference is Kaidan have loving parents and Arcann have a genocidal god as a father; both lived their lives and suffered under the circumstances that was beyond their control. I guess, I like complex fictional men who isn't all what they seem straight out of the box.

How about Alistair? I think he's a much more layered and interesting character romanced or not in DAO than Kaidan is in three games. He has so many outcomes as well and he has something that Kaidan sorely lacks if you ask me. A sense of humor. Women (and men) like to laugh no? Kaidan is not really funny. No, you don't need to be a goofball constantly, but a joke here or there isn't asking too much is it? Maybe that's why some see him as stiff? He's a very by the books guy and serious 99 percent of the time. The only time he said something remotely funny is when he unintentionally incriminated himself on Noveria when he mentioned extranet fetishes. But it was unintentional.

obbie1984 Alistair is a Fantasy genre archetype. He's basically a naive version of Lord of the Rings' Aragorn. A hidden heir among the common folk, with you helping him out to fulfill his potential. His progression relates to him from being a boy at heart to his growing maturity as a man. Either as king or as a hidden king among the Grey Wardens. Those are similar themes that I can relate to Arcann's but not Kaidan's. Shepard have no influence to his maturity as a grown man. He's already is at the start of ME1, older than Shepard, already know what he want and aware of his place in the world and his own ambitions. Shepard does not serve to fulfill his characterization or personal arcs; Kaidan depends on the progression of the narrative arcs (which was shared with Shepard's). He survived Eden Prime, he survived Virmire, survived the Collector attack on their ship, survived Virmire, survived Earth's invasion, Mars and Citadel etc. What he gain is not maturity but more experience. By ME3, he's still good-natured and does retain his humor; but it was muted because he became a tragic character who is surviving a horrifying invasion of his home and his parent's death; which is a very different curveball that Ashley didn't share. He's a character of masculine empathy. Already a rare thing even in popular culture.

aoibhealfaeFair enough. But I think the fact that Alistair can be molded and changed makes him more interesting. I mean helping the person you care about to stand up for themselves is a good thing right? And if you can change the person you love into a better or stronger person, I think that shows just as much meaning (if not more so) than what you go through with Kaidan. The fact that you don't have as much of an affect on Kaidan makes his arc seem a tad weaker.
