I think the Frostbite engine doesn't work for Mass Effect. The engine LOOKS amazing, but it's meant for setpieces, i.e. backgrounds and such. Racing games that only "need" a certain amount of terrain and have no need for facial animations get good mileage (pun) out of the engine. As far as I'm told, the Unreal engine is made for RPG's, it's not "as good" for vistas and whatnot, but has all the tools needed or accessible for what makes and RPG an RPG. With Andromeda, the development team had to fabricate stuff from scratch because Frostbite didn't have it in the package. Considering all the setbacks either unforeseen or forced upon them, I make it a point to respect the effort put into the game. The thing was when BioWare moved to Frostbite a lot of modules that they would have needed were not created yet. So they had to create those modules just like they would have had to with any other engine out there for no game engine would have had everything BioWare needed to make a Mass Effect game since their games are on the more unique side. It was more of Frostbite wasn't setup for RPGs to begin with and as of 2018 they are in a much better spot since more studios besides Dice use it. When it comes to basics of any game they are generally the same principles that are used to get a game to work its just how you combine those elements to create the game. Especially now where the lines of genres are a blur. Everything I have been reading about BioWare Montreal is that the management was a major hurdle for the game, such as not dropping procedural content sooner (which is what Frostbite wasn't designed for). There have been a couple of reports, but I cannot remember where I read them that made the claims that BioWare Montreal was also turning down help from BioWare Edmonton which could mean they were creating modules and other backend assets when they didn't need to. To me the core of the problem was that BioWare was making two similar games at the same time that both needed a large amount of systems to be created and egos got involved at some point. To me a key example would be the dialogue system, I think Dragon Age: Inquisition had a far superior dialogue system and Mass Effect: Andromeda used what seems to be version 1 of if while Dragon Age: Inquisition used an updated version based on feedback even though Inquisition was released first.

Open World worked pretty well in Andromeda But I would really love the second coming of ME2 where the editing and attention to detail of cinematics is on-point rivaling non-RPG AAA titles like Uncharted. ME3 and Andromeda and DAI are inconsistent in production value across the experience. ME2 was tight and consistent - I want that the most. I am not 100% sure on this for its from various places, but it sounds like Dead Space 2 had a development budget of $60 million dollars which is why it failed, but Mass Effect: Andromeda had a development budget of around $50 million Canadian with a total budget around $100 Canadian so the all in for Andromeda was around $70 million US. Now if that Dead Space 2 budget was before promotional money is involved it makes Andromeda seem like a budget title that got a lot more done. The big thing I think BioWare needs is time to make their games and with how games are developed across the board anymore it doesn't happen enough unless you have had a major hit that can justify the bigger budget. (Edit) Which is what I am hoping Anthem can do for BioWare is to let them get the chance to have a bigger budget to make the games they want while making something the market has a lot of interest in.

If Dead Space 2 failed why did a third get green lit? EA gave Visceral another chance. There was a former developer from Visceral that said it failed to make money. (Edit) Its why I don't think BioWare as a company is in a lot of danger with Anthem because of the amount of chances that was given to Visceral. Link This was after the closure of Visceral.
