I did this thing in the Star Wars thread that was actually a lot of fun and I would love to continue.
Give me what you think everybody can agree is objectively the best movie in the world!

I will give an honest answer. Casablanca. It has just about everything, including a nicely twisty plot.

Since someone already said The Lord of the Rings, The music, the cinematography, the atmosphere, all combine to make something truly amazing. If you do not think this movie is great...

The lord of the rings trilogy. All of my noes. So, thankfully that candidate is right out. If you couldn't read/never learned to read, I suppose you might enjoy the LotR movies.

Now this is a tough choice. I did not see Casablanca for years and years and when I did, I dd think it was one of the best.
This might be easier if we had different genres.
I am going to say 'Goodfellas'

From a commercial and nonprofessional consumer perspective it's arguable between Gone With the Wind and the original Star Wars (A New Hope). The former has a higher gross earnings individually, but has had 4 extra decades to get there, and it didn't indirectly spawn an extremely lucrative franchise.
From a professional critical perspective it's probably Citizen Kane or Battleship Potemkin
Attempting to apply a degree of absolute objectivity past that is not really possible, but that doesn't mean one can't say with a fair degree of certainty that a certain film is better than another.
e.g. it's absurd to suppose that Alien 3 is as good as Alien just because someone, somewhere likes the former and thinks the latter is boring.

It's a three-way tie between The Room, Schizopolis, and Hudson Hawk.*

I'd have suggested The Godfather, but then a bunch of whiny brats would have said. "But nuuuuuuu.... The second one got more Oscars so it must be beeeeeeeeeetter!"

However, I was still able to enjoy them.
Anyway, I mentioned this in the Star Wars thread -The Shawshank Redemption.

The second one got more Oscars so it must be beeeeeeeeeetter!" they're both inarguably great films to the point where it probably is to a degree subjective which one is "objectively better". However, only a fool would attempt to argue that Godfather 3 is in the same league.

Yeah "can't read" but anyway. There are people that migh have been bothered by the films, having read the books as onecrazymonkey stated above. That doesn't mean it's the same for everyone. I know there are fans out there that loved the movie despite the changes.

Not close to the quality of lotr though.

The books were far inferior to the movies. Quite. LotR was great worldbuilding, but trite writing. It is vastly overrated as books because Tolkein created such a vast world and mythology. Objectively, it is iver written, leans heavy on exposition, and entire sections are meaningless padding. As a trilogy of books, LotR is rather mediocre in reality.

There's a good reason shit like the Tom Bombadil/Barrow Downs section was deleted. The reason Tolkien is cool is because Middle Earth is really well fleshed out, not because either LotR or The Hobbit were flawless narratives with great characters.

Definitely over-written. Definitely leans heavily on an unreliable omniscient 3rd person narrator. Entire sections are meaningless padding? I beg to differ. How do you build this incredible world, without some digression and extra character development? It makes the world enormous, varied, and more real. Your conclusions are not unique, and have been shared by some critics. Others have found the same charm that I did. The billions of fans around the world have a "vastly" different opinion than yours, so much so that in most circles yours is laughable. What I glean from your post, is that you read the books critically rather than for pleasure, and perhaps just found the material too dense to follow, or too much work. That's ok, go read a Choose your own Adventure.

If you think the unnecessary changes Jackson made were beneficial to the overall story, I disagree. If you think he made excellent casting decisions, I disagree. If you think he took too many liberties for the sake of his "continuity", I wholeheartedly agree. Arwen Evenstar, as beautiful as Liv Tyler is, was poorly cast, and performed too many roles. Galadriel ought to have been a knock-out. I could go on, but honestly I watched the movies once, never again, and hell no I didn't watch the abomination that was "The Hobbit" movies.

Fair enough, I'm not particularly attached to either, though I enjoyed the LotR movies more and the Hobbit novel more, the latter in large part because I think the movies are bloated similarly to how the LotR novels are (the huge amount of continuity wrecking fanservice aimed at fanbois of LotR and general movie audiences doesn't help, either). Regarding casting, who would you say is bad in particular? Ian McKellan, Andy Serkis and Christopher Lee were IMO standouts as good, and everyone else I'd describe as "okay" to "meh". Honestly, with a lot of the characters in LotR there isn't much to work with as is. Hobbit (films) really only worth it for Bilbo's interactions with Gollum and Smaug. The 3rd movie in particular was forgettable. All I remember is a mindless CGI battle scene that seemingly went on for hours.
