i wouldn’t be surprised if Obsidian is all but name. You mean like Bioware?... Anyway, the only point in buying a developer like Obsidian is if you plan to make something that's at least vaguely similar to what they did before. If it's completely new and unrelated there would be no point. It depends on how you feel about BioWare. Obviously you feel different, but I still think BioWare is still the same company. And yeah Microsoft changed Rare, having them make Banjo-Kazooie about building cars and making create other games that were out of their comfort zone like sea of thieves and other irrelevant games. Obsidian would fade faster though hopefully that’s not the case.

The problem I have with that argument is that BioWare was changing before EA. I know I have said my piece about KOTOR to Mass Effect and Baldur's Gate to Dragon Age. Those games were massive shifts from the games that were just released before them so maybe there might be elements that happened quicker or a different way because of EA, but to expect BioWare even without EA to be making games like they did before EA still I think is unrealistic for BioWare always changed with the markets. As far as Obsidian, their culture as a company would need to change for I cannot remember a game of theirs that I enjoyed at launch it took months of patching before I could play their games. If anything I think their future is very close to what happened to Lionhead and all the different changes to Fable over the years.

Which wouldn't be too bad ... until it eventually morphs into open world, shooter mmos "with a personal narrative" and yes/no dialogue choices. Where have we seen this before ...

Where have we seen this before ... Yeah, but maybe we'll get something good along the way as well. I have low hope of that with the track record Obsidian has. There is a chance for them to surprise me, but it would require Microsoft to clamp down on the QA procedures they have.

The shift was immediately after.

I suspect that tightening procedures and improving management is going to be the first step for MS. That said, flaws aside, I enjoyed their previous products, and the way I see it it's in the interest of the consumer to have competition in the market. To be honest the first ME and DA:O strike me as games that still belong to old Bioware. The shift was immediately after. Yeah, you see a sharp change in direction immediately after. I don't think that all of it was bad necessarily, but the change was certainly distinctive enough. I would say the shift happened right after ME2. That game is still considered by many as one of Bioware greatest games. Then their quality took a sharp decline with DA2 and ME3.

Anyway, that's why I said that not all changes were negatives, overall ME2 was an enjoyable game. (even if some design decisions were somewhat questionable, both with the plot and a deeper reliance on "rule of cool")
Pretty much this. While the quality is still great you could already see some subtle changes at the game's core which was already more action oriented and less RPG. Like Laughing Man said not all off those changes were necessarily bad or made ME2 worse than ME, tho.
