Generally clueless, cowardly or overly insecure.
This is something I haven't tried yet, because I always feel the need to play my characters as people who can get the job done.

I've considered doing it. The problem is, for most quests if you say 'good luck with that on your own' you just don't do the quest. Then you don't get to play the game. There are only a few key decisions forced on you. I actually tried telling Duncan that I don't want to be a Warden and he said that nobody asked for my opinion.

(Actual dialogue) Dalish Warden: You can't make me join against my will! Duncan: Yes, I will drag you kicking and screaming if I have to.

Come to think of it, there is a way to rp an idiot in the Awakening. I have plans to make a warden who will make real stupid Vigil's Keep decisions and I also want to see Varel's reaction.

No, never so far as that. My Warden is a reluctant hero who'd rather be spending his time reading books than fighting for his life, but he still does what he needs to.

Nah, for the same reason a lot of other people won't play humans. I'm already an idiot in real life, why would I want to act it out in a power fantasy?

Nah, I haven't played as a Qunari yet.
Only time in a game I played as an idiot was Fallout 2. Which wasn't hard since you start off as some backwater savage.

I do have an Inquisitor in mind for a future playthrough. I wouldn't call her a coward or idiot, but would call her very insecure and a bit clueless about some things (especially early on). Likely to defer to others' decisions - ex. goes with the Templars because she thinks it's what the advisors want her to do). I think you can still pretty much do all the quests you would have normally, but the difference is in what decisions you make/why you make them.
I'll have to actually play her to see how/if she grows post Skyhold...

I've played characters who were book dumb but street smart. Or the opposite - highly intelligent but socially inept and prone to trusting the wrong people.

I'm tempted but I feel like we don't get much choice for that, do we? The Inquisitor's dialogue is already pretty "I'm in charge", and the Warden too. Purple Hawke can pssibly approach this a bit more but not much...
In Skyrim my favourite thing to do is to make my Dragonborn to run down the highest mountain in straight line only in loinclothes, which is possibly the funniest most idiot thing to do. Not sure if something similar is possible in DA universe.

And this Hawke probably rather the blue one... at least my blue one...

Yeah I've played characters with next to no knowledge of things but generally speaking only when playing a rogue/warrior. My mages I tend to play as pretty smart knowing plenty about the world so they know how to make best use of their powers

An apostate is more "street-smart", cautious, probably less book-smart like a Circle Mage, who knows almost nothing about the life – only from books. A Dalish among humans can be ignorant, while a very good mage.

In fact my Nova Lavellan I've got on the go I'm playing that way as well.

Never intentionally. I had some moments in first playthroughs, where I wanted to bump my head on the desk a few times though, because I just got some things wrong and earned some funny and strange reactions.

yeah. i mean, clearly i'm a genius in real life, but i creates characters that are different from me all the time (well, not ALL, but a lot). thing is, i never decides that a character be an idiot, i just create background and personality for them and some of them turn out smart and others, less. to be more clear: i don't choose a dialogue option, or make an in game choice, because it's stupid, but rather, the one that is most fitted to the character i'm playing to make or say.
i think it's important when playing/RP a character, being certain quality, is that you don't force it upon them, just be that character you created and let them do the rest.

the real struggle for me would be to play an ignorant character (which is not the same as an idiot). someone who have little knowledge of lore and such. since i like reading about stuff, i have a fair amount of knowledge about the lore, and as such in order to play a character who have little knowledge of a lot of things, i need to either pretend i don't know it, or just have my mind blank when playing that sort of characters.

Yeah I think we all get those though because on our first runs we don't quite know yet what to expect. Once we have a fwe under our belts we should and we can make the characters a little more like what we want them to be.

I believe I roleplayed an "idiot" once in Origins. A Naive, airheaded, too-girly-for-trudging-through-swamps-and-forests, cowardly f!warden Cousland. I chose a Cousland because I almost always play as a mage and no mage of mine is going to be an idiot.
DAII and Inquisition never really gave options to play as such a character. I feel the only game where I could truly play as an idiot stooge is Fallout NV.

I have two Hawkes that might fit that description: Sad-sack Hawke (pretty much lost nearly all her companions at the end, had her head in the drink), and Derpy Hawke; more naive than an idiot, but...*shrug*. He was my Merrillmancer (I admit I always had a hard time not seeing her as a little sister type, so I mirrored his dialogue and actions as if he was a male version of her). BTW, not calling Merrill an idiot - Hawke being the PC would look "derpier" (hence the name), if he responded to things with a Merrill mindset. Merrill doesn't have to do and say the things the PC does, so she is fine as she is. If that makes sense.
