I was reading up on the Dragon Age wiki and where I came across a codex entry called "King Maric's Helm"
In the codex entry, it states that Maric was to attend a gathering of the Marcher lords in an attempt to forge a union in the north, and when he failed to appear, the Free Marches fell back into the petty squabbling that they are infamous for. What does this mean? Was he trying to forge an alliance with some of the City-States? Or was it an attempt to forge a new nation in the Free Marches?

I think, based off The silent Grove comic, that he can't have been serious about trying. I think it was a cover to keep Loghain from following him; based on the books and the wealth Loghain spent in trying to find him, my idea that Maric would feel the need to cover his "trip" in "political need" has merit.
That "trip to the Free Marches" was actually his trip to fulfill Flemyth's promise to help Yavana in Antiva. He got caught on the way, and Yavana had to break him out of prison.

Why did the Crows even kidnap Maric and keep him locked up for four years (stated in the comics)? They never tried to ransom him they just captured a head of state for no reason why?

Why did the Crows even kidnap Maric and keep him locked up for four years (stated in the comics)? They never tried to ransom him they just captured a head of state for no reason why? I'll have to re read the comic to delve for more clues, but offhand, the Wikia just says he was in the Antivan Crow Prison, not that he was caught by the Antivan Crows. Although, maybe they did catch him, but the Crows were paid well to keep him there. But then that begs the question, who would pay to have King Merric imprisoned? Unless there is another clue in the comic book, I'd say this was perhaps a Writer's Mistake. Grabbing at familiar names and titles without realizing it creates nonsense.

I can believe that he was using it as a smokescreen, but that sounds like a political opportunity that he'd have to be pretty dense to completely squander. Maybe he intended to do his favor for Yavana in addition to trying to... ... I'd imagine if he's doing anything there at all (and I admit that I have no idea if Maric is bright enough that we can assume he was) he'd be trying to forge an alliance rather than an Empire. Empires don't seem to be his thing. What little I actually know about his characterization suggests he's the opposite of power-hungry.

It's possible he wanted a stronger country so that Orlais didn't think to invade again. Maric was definitely not power hungry.
