I can't seem to find a proper straight answer for this question. When I search for it I just keep seeing pre-release marketing quotes about romances being complex blah blah blah. Can I romance a companion that completely hates/dislikes me like you could in Dragon Age 2 when they were set to "rival"? To be more specific, if Sera hates every choice I make and how I talk to her so she hates me (apart from when the romance dialogue appears, choosing them instead) is it possible to romance her?

I'm pretty sure the answer is no. Dislike in DAI is is not DA2 rivalry. In DAI if they dislike you they find you vile, evil and totally not bang-able. I also think that you need friendship points to further the romance, and you aint getting that if they hate you. So no, you can't romance people that hate you. But I'm not 100% on it. Just around 85%-ish. But I do know you can have a slightly rivalish romance if you disagree with them on issues, yet manage to keep the friendship score high. Some companions will even comment on it, like if you disagree about faith with Cassandra and like cookies with Sera. (Because raisin cookies are delicious, damn you!) Not sure if there are more of those events. But I'm pretty sure that you can't romance companions that hate your guts.

I think, not. In DA:I the rivalry romance doesn't exist. As I see, you need high approval to starting the romance. (Dorian's romance quest cost so many Venatori's blood, I dont know, Sera's approval how working.)

No, you can't romance someone, with low approval in DAI. You have to be on good terms first with that person before romancing them.

I once heard of a dedicated played punching Solas in the face and still managing to romance him later.
I think that's as close to a rivalry turned romance you can get.

Actually I think you can say all sorts of mean things to Cullen or Josephine and they will still respond positively to your "heart" choices. It's because they don't have approval/disapproval.

I wonder if one could just ignore him until after the Templars/Mages/Wardens quests, get the punch scene, then discuss all the dialogue you've never used to start getting him back up again.

Ah I see thanks for the information guys. I know that Inquisition doesn't have a rival system I was just using it as an example.

Whilst I haven't done this myself, I think it is possible to start the romance early, through having high enough approval, and then have it drop low enough later in the game to have a crisis point.
I have seen on You Tube where the PC punches Dorian and he responds by saying "So much for us". This was near the end of the game because he had been criticising the Inquisitor for killing Abelas and his sentinels. Presumably there had been some other decisions, for example exiling the Wardens, that he had not approved of and so this had gone down from the time that the romance started. If the PC hadn't punched him, then presumably the romance would have continued but likely Dorian wouldn't have stuck around after the party at Skyhold.
Regardless of approval you can also get an ultimatum from Sera if you are en elf concerning your faith in the Creators.
DAI differs from DA2 in that you can have approval drop down again at any point through the game, unlike DA2 where once you were locked in as either a friend or rival, nothing was going to affect that state. This was particularly noticeable with Anders where I got locked in as a friend early in Act 2, yet I kept making decisions after that which he ought to have hated but whilst he might rant, it made no difference to my standing with him. From that point of view I prefer DAI.
