New protagonist. I liked the way Divinity 2 did it. Write 6 fully voiced characters, player picks one to play, the rest become potential squad mates. I wouldn't like if it was like Divinity Because first, you have to choose between a premade character and a custom character. Second, you have a fixed party in Divinity. Which means every companion that is not IN your party (max 4) will die at the end of Act 1.

It's a bit of a tricky vote. That depends on what the future Mass Effect will be. Who knows, may they do the Lucas and sell the franchise to Disney, who then turns it into an animated series.
I certainly hope there will be another Andromeda, in which case Ryder's story will continue.
If it wasn't for Andromeda I'd be asking for more freedom at character creation... possibly different backgrounds depending on whence the character comes from and their species, with three or four different archetypes to pick from and then customise. The obvious downside is that, if the game wishes to stand true to the deep involvement of the main character which is typical for Mass Effect, it would create a massive amount of development overhead.

There are side characters from the original trilogy, which might yet make good player characters. Not that I think that will happen. I don't think that road will be taken even if there is another Mass Effect (aside from the fact that I, personally, would prefer another Andromeda); to let the player choose from several existing characters which weren't tailored to meet the story would constraint the players customisation options and would still create a lot of design overhead.
I realise they are both female, which would not make a well rounded character selection, but my first two ideas for male characters were Conrad Verner (the fan from ME1) and Niftu Cal ("I am a biotic god. Fear me!")... so I guess that I'll leave that to someone else.

We know of no skills she would bring to the table. Same with Conrad.
Niftu Cal is interesting so long as he doesn't run away from a fight. I wonder how his pressure suit and breather would impact his ability to fight. In the case of other races, the armor is good in all situations and they're not vulnerable when they seal that same armor when in poisonous or no atmosphere. Volus pressure suits seem like they might be punctured more easily and they would most likely die. They also didn't bring fighters to the Reaper War. They supplied ships and money, incredibly important for the war, but no sign of any ground troops. I'd have to downvote Niftu for this reason.
Also, don't worry about the sex of the characters you're bringing up. If they make sense it doesn't really matter. We just need good characters.

Niftu Cal or Condrad Verner were a joke, they're obviously unsuitable. Niftu manifested his biotic abilities only because he was pumped up with drugs, as he was used as lab rat... unless the idea is to turn a successor of Mass Effect into a humerous self-parody, Niftu is not a good option.
Regarding Oriana, since Miranda is a biotic Oriana must at least be a latent biotic, given they are clones (in spite of having different voices). Oriana has proven to be pretty inquisitive and resourceful. She may not have combat skills, but I don't think that matters. Anyone can pick up a gun and shoot it if they have to. Oriana is definitely not someone to give up on finding out something just because its dangerous. Liara did not appear to have much combat experience when we found her and she became the Shadow Broker. That Oriana would have to learn things as she goes is part of the charm. Still, given that she has little combat abilities, but has some knowledge in investigation and is likely at least a latent biotic, she would be inclined towards Sentinel.
In the essence, one does not have to have formal combat training in order to become a hero in a space opera. And she has the advantage of actually being kindred to "Team Shepard" without belonging to it. She kinda represents the next generation.
A more serious option for a male character might be Feron, if anyone wants to play a Drell.

Anyone can pick up a gun and shoot but can they hit anything? Are they prepared for the recoil? Knowing how to use it matters far more than having a gun. As for Liara, she's a prime case for why I think Shiala would have made a far better squadmate. She makes no sense going from shy archaeologist to the most amazing information broker the galaxy has ever seen. I'm actually planning an RP for my next trilogy run where Feros is my first stop and Shiala is recruited instead of Liara on Therum. I can do it, too. I made a whole RP with twin Shepards. It was kind of cool. I do write-ups for this kind of stuff. A more serious option for a male character might be Feron, if anyone wants to play a Drell. He'd be a great option, especially with Thane being dead.

Niftu Cal may have started through drugs and for laughs but how far his biotics go is up in the air. Depending on how canon you take MP to be Volus can be very effective.
Here is someone far better than me using one.

Anyone can pick up a gun and shoot but can they hit anything? Are they prepared for the recoil? Knowing how to use it matters far more than having a gun. That's a matter of training; characters grow, that's the point of the game. The skills that a character has is irrelevant. What is important is the potential.
Oriana did try to shoot her father, at least according to him, and she was merely a teenager then. The next time she might not fail. What Miranda wanted for Oriana was a "normal life", yet the experiences with Miranda and Shepard certainly did affect her. A character to be the protagonist of Mass Effect does not have to be a soldier, they merely have to plausibly be an adventurer. The will to fight is more important than the skill.

Everything other than biotics is just a matter of training to some extent. That doesn’t mean you can just hand wave the training. I get that it’s the trend nowadays. 3 episodes with 15 minutes of training and the computer nerd is now a expert martial artist who takes on commandos. But combat skill takes real and significant training and experience. Guns less so than hand to hand but still quite a bit of training. As for liara she was 100 when you bump into her she very well could have had more years of combat experience than oriana had years of life. She’d been a solo archeologist bumping into mercenaries and bandits for years and presumably since her mom led asari commandos probably some training before she went out the door. And she was still portrayed as inexperienced.

Don’t get me started on multi class rules in d&d. God I think that’s so bad. I wouldn’t put it past any show, book, game to do it as it happens all the time. I just think it’s terrible.

I was torn between new and Shep...when i thought about how great Shep was written...i went with him. Canon the extended scene with Shep breathing and create a scenario in the Milky Way that leads to Shep heading to Andromeda by the end of it....didn't really like Ryder as a character.....and i get they wasn't trying to make Shep 2.0....but Ryder just seemed like a pushover at times and i understand he/she was green at the position, but still, he/she just wasn't a good character....
A good aftermath threat in the Milky Way, with the folks rebuilding that leads to them somehow traveling to Andromeda.....Shep coming back for another ME game would create that spark again, but the game would have to be written on the level of how the trilogy was written years ago...

If anything, I'd expect the less hardcore fans to not really care too much who the next PC is. (Honestly, I don't care too much myself.) Incidentally, your framing of the issue is either tendentious or just plain silly. This poll doesn't actually cover "Bioware hardcore fans." It covers that small subset of users of this board who are invested enough in the question of who the next PC is to read the thread. Your side's going to be over-represented in that sample since you really hate Ryder. It's not even clear that Ryder hasn't won, since we don't know how the Shepard voters would break when Shepard loses and we have to have a runoff between Ryder and not-Shepard-not-Ryder.

The Ryder's side is also over-represented in that sample since some fanboys really love anything Bioware does, being it good or bad.

You'd get even less significant results. Most general gamers wouldn't vote. It would be even more skewed towards the haters.
Now, if we arranged it using proper survey methods where gamers weren't selecting themselves to take the poll, we'd get usable information, yep. I don't know what that information would be.

It would add cost, but would not be "very costly", and in fact is an efficient way of leveraging money already spent (assuming you want the feature). You have already hired the voice actors and the writers have already shaped the characters personalities and and backgrounds. Divinity 2 did it, and did it very well imo. Many, many lines are already written that never get seen by individual players.

These things are mainly arbitrary design choices and not really tied to the concept although I guess a pure custom character wouldn't really work in the more cinematic experience of Mass Effect.

Except 67 people want Ryder 15 Shep and 65 new. So a good portion still want Ryder. But most on a BIOWARE FAN FORUM don't want this prick. That says a lot. If the majority of Bioware hardcore fans don't want this worthless protagonist, then they should really dump it. It's time to face reality. Um there are plenty that do.
