I've seen a bunch of threads in which we discussed which game we find overrated, games we gave up on and so. And I'm curious about which games you feel are underrated or under-appreciated. (If a thread like that already exists, I apologize, and we can all move on ).
I could name, off the top of my head, Vampire: The Masquerade- Bloodlines, for example. It has many flaws but I think it's a great RPG.
I really liked Soma, as well, and I think it was overlooked, maybe because of its gameplay. I'm sure there are more, but I can't think of anything more right now.

Cosmic Star Heroine, a nice indie JRPG-like game that's a homage to the 16 bit JRPGs of yore, with never a dull moment in terms of gameplay and story pacing.
Another such indie JRPG, Echoes of Aetheria.

Kingdoms of Amalur and Planescape" Torment. PST may be a classic now to a niche few, but when it was released the game bombed. Kingddoms of Amalur was released around the same time as Skyrim and thus was overlooked.

Agreed! It's a buggy piece of crap, to be sure, but it's also one of the best RPGs I have ever played.
My other underrated favourite is The Secret World. I don't like the combat quite as much in the relaunched Secret World Legends but the story is still one of my favourites in any video game, let alone an MMORPG. It was nice to have an excuse to play the whole thing through twice even if it meant having to grind my gear up all over again.
I also think that the Tex Murphy series deserves broader recognition than it gets - it's well-regarded in dedicated adventure gaming circles but compared to LucasArts or Sierra stuff relatively few people seem to be aware of its existence.

Another such indie JRPG, Echoes of Aetheria. I must say that I'm not very much acquainted with JRPG. I just know a bunch of them, which I enjoyed, so I may take a look at them.

Japanese indie dev Astro Port and it's collection of 2D action games are pretty overlooked and underrated.

Another series of games overlooked and underrated is the "Legacy of Kain" series for PSX and PS2. This series of gems starts with the first and rare game "Blood Omen." You play as Kain a nobleman murdered seemingly for no reason. Offered a choice for revenge by the necromancer Mortanius. Kain is resurrected as a vampire. Kain is not the typical woe is me vampire. He is an antihero and a badass. There is a hard to find PC version but it is unstable. I suggest buying a PSX and if you could find it buy the game. The second game in the series "Soul Reaver" features Raziel the first of Kain's vampiric sons and takes place 1000 years after "Blood Omen." Kain is now a dark god and you embark on a journey for revenge against your brothers and maker. Raziel like Kain before him is a badass who feeds on souls. The next game is "Soul Reaver 2" this continues Raziel's journey. The next game which could be skipped because it doesn't fit with the established lore is "Blood Omen 2", takes place 200 years after the original. Lastly "Defiance" travel back in time to the events of the original "Blood omen" and play as both Kain and Raziel. All but the original "Blood Omen" can be purchased at GoG.com for cheap. Aside for having a great story. The LoK series boasts some of the best voice acting such as, Simon Templeman (Kain as well as Loghain in DAO), Tony Jay (The Elder God), and Michael Bell (Raziel.)

Yes! I've totally forgotten about those! We had Soul Reaver 1&2, if I recall correctly. My brother and I would spend hours playing them. For what I can remember, this series has built a great mythology, plot and characters Oh! And great OST as well.

For what I can remember, this series has built a great mythology, plot and characters Oh! And great OST as well. Yes, sadly overlooked and underrated. If you haven't you should try Defiance the last LoK game. It wraps up most of the loose ends and answers many questions. Also it was one of the last games Tony Jay (Elder God) voiced before he passed away. You can get it dirt cheap on GoG.com.

The most underrated game ever imho is Drakensang The Dark Eye, followed by its successor Drakensang The River of Time. They are both very good, especially the first one, and they would deserve much more consideration than many other games of the same category.

oo, oo, I got one!
^great game, the world is incredibly deep, the story is very well done. The only thing bad about is is the combat is very clunky.
Still, if your into amazingly well thought out characters, I'd give this one a look.

I forgot how challenging there games could be. I am still in the first village.

Vampire Bloodlines is so underrated. It would have been one of the best games out there if Troika wasn't being rushed to finish it and then they went bankrupt.

ATM I watched Angel series and didn't know about the game. Later Edward & Bella happened. When I finally find out about the game, the vampire genre has long lost its appeal to me.

And the greatest multiplayer game that you can play singleplayer!
By 2004-5 graphics are improved to a very good level. So you can't whine this time about the outdated graphics (maybe a RL rant written here!)

...
So. Much. This. I think this game was quite successful for the company that made it, but it seems that it is not nearly as popular or famous as I think it deserves to be. Being a roughly 10-hour mostly linear "walking simulator" with not much in the way of challenging gameplay probably does not help its cause. But I think SOMA is one of the most amazing achievements in video games that I have ever had the good fortune of playing. A very moving and profound experience, delivered effortlessly in an almost minimalistic way - this game is outstanding.
I better stop rambling about it now before it is too late . On the lighter side of things, one series of games comes to mind which I found highly enjoyable both in terms of gameplay, setting and story is NOLF (No One lives forever), but it never seemed to gain much commercial traction despite good reviews.

I totally agree with you! SOMA is a rather especial game, and very intense, if I must say. It is one of the few video games in which, when you did questionable, or awful thing, you could really feel it, you completely knew it was wrong (at least for me) . It is true that the game was not scary per se, but I think the true horror component of it was the philosophical questions it arose. It has compelling narrative and it leaves you wondering, questioning morality and humanity the same way Simon does. I loved the setting as well, it has a beautifully decadent atmosphere to it.
NOLF was a shooter, if I recall correctly?

NOLF was a shooter, if I recall correctly? Absolutely, especially the bold part . Besides that really well-executed existential horror scenario, the genius of this game for me was how they managed to make one think about the very fundamentals of what it means to be alive, conscious , to have morals and a purpose - e.g. what does it mean to be human ? And they pull this off without grandstanding, judgement or lengthy exposition of any kind. I think I need to play it again sometime soon .
As for NOLF, yes it is basically a sneaker/shooter kind of game with a cool and exceedingly self-ironic James Bond-type storyline. The gameplay and setting is very satisfying and the story is both interesting and hilariously funny.

Kingdom & Kingdom: Two Crowns As far as I can tell, these titles are rather overlooked for the most part. So overlooked that I wasn't even aware that the game had a multiplayer sequel in the works until I saw it in my store suggestions.
There's no real storyline to the game, mechanically the game isn't too in depth with empire management, and graphically the game is nowhere close to the likes of Tomb Raider or Red Dead, but there is an undeniable charm when playing it that just pulls you in. With the addition of two player online/splitscreen multiplayer in the second title; as well as two distantly different factions; the series has never been better. Plus, all this goodness is less than 1 GB in size, so it's not like it will rob you of hard drive space.
