Reviews are almost all very positive. Looking VERY promising! I hope after all the disgusting FO76 news The Outer Worlds sells well. Because if not, then live service garbage is all we'll be getting in the future. Live services is the future now no matter what. Bethesda is gonna keep being shitty it seems, but hey now that Obsidian will have proper founding thanks to Microsoft their future is looking very bright.

This wasn't on my play list, but as a Game Pass sub, I'm in.
In any case, a little break from, er, Breakpoint.
Let's see how we go.

What's the size of the game? Just curious for downloading purposes. It releases tomorrow (or today if you're in the eastern part of the world I guess), but I'll be out this weekend, yikes. Well I suppose I'll be playing next/by next weekend then.

Had some time tonight, so jumped in. I've noticed Epic's servers have improved. They were easily the slowest of the major publishers, but now they're as fast as Steam, even maxing out my 1 Gb connection. Decided to lean into the charm with this charm with this character, and leave the heavy lifting to the others... Noticed a couple of bugs though. It won't save your keybindings when you restart the game. Also, for some reason the Logitech mouse software does not see this game.

Just when I bought a Logitech mouse for the first time, eh? And keybindings are important to me, so... They got exactly one year to fix the issues

I got it downloaded for the Xbox beta app for my computer. I'd rather be home playing, but I have to get through the working day first. But when I'm off work I got a whole weekend playing it to look forward to. I got no plans and nothing schedueled. So this better be a good game 😁.

INITIAL IMPRESSIONS
Anyone who has ever played Fallout: New Vegas or Kotor II will find this game very familiar (that's a good thing). This quote from Obsidian regarding the environment is accurate "a good bit of context for the approach is to think of what we did in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, with potentially more ground to cover and explore in each area." (It's not Skyrim open world size, think bigger Kotor II)
The immediate environment around the protagonists spaceship is like a greatly expanded Ebon Hawk landing zone, I found it very reminiscent the first time I encountered it. It has the standard Fallout: NV inventory, tools, repair, consumables/health, workstations, stat's and perk systems, It even has it's own Vats mechanic (all the Fallout staples are there, they've just got a different name). So far I've found it to be very Fallout in a Kotor II-esque environment.
As I said before anyone who has played Fallout: NV and Kotor II will find this game very familiar and will be able to dive straight into the gameplay without too much trouble. So far so good. If they get modding functionality up and running for this then they've really got something here.

Combat started out kinda frustrating, with the range of my weapons so low and enemy tendencies to move in packs.
Now I have a hunting rifle with a scope, and things are much better now

Played for about 2 hours yesterday and got into Edgewater. Than quit the game but went back to make some screenshots. Upon loading any of my saves, the game crashed to desktop without any error message. Finally, I could load a save that was still in the countryside but as soon as I tried to enter Edgewater, the game crashed again. Didn't have time to do much tinkering yesterday (will try a bunch of things tonight, reinstall, driver rollbacks, etc.) but if anyone came across a similar problem and found a solution/workaround, please let me know.

Thanks, that's not too bad. I will start downloading unfortunately Sunday night I think, have to leave city in a couple of hours. Everyone is praising the game especially for the surprising lack of bugs. That's a new one. I think I'll enjoy this one quite a lot.

The positive reception of The Outer World's and the almost universal condemnation of the abomination that is Fallout 76 must be a sweet moment for Obsidian after the Bethesda metacritic criteria for Fallout: New Vegas saw them narrowly miss out on royalties by one metacritic point. That's karma for you which is especially ironic as I believe Fallout has a karma perk.
Bethesda Games Studios were an iconic developer but they've completely lost the plot and trashed their reputation, it's high time to purge the suits. Arrogant complacency, thinking you have a captive market and audience, they couldn't have been more wrong when you now have Obsidian (now with microsoft behind them) and CDPR rolling their tanks on to their RPG lawn.

I just don't see the purpose of such an elaborated character creator ( I have seen a video on youtube ) if you can never see your character. It might be that way with Cyberpunk too apparently according to some rumors. That new trend is very bizarre.

First person RPGs had character creators since the 90s and until 2006 when Oblivion released (a game meant to be played 1st person game, unless you prefer looking at a butt while playing) all character creators, 3rd person included, were "select a face picture".

Ok. Something absolutely basic, why not. But It's absolute nonsense in my opinion to waste resources into an elaborated character creator if you don't allow the third character point of view at the same time, if you never see your character. I personally like seeing my character from time to time, I like seeing what he is wearing, customization of armors and all, I like seeing him with his face or his body interacting with an NPC if it is possible. You can also turn the camera and choose the distance around. Holycrap, the character creator of Fallout 3 is way more limited than the one of The Outer worlds, and yet, you can have both point of view in that game. That's ridiculous. I personally don't give two birds about a character creator if I am never going to see my character, what he is wearing, if I cannot play with the camera. It's even a little weird to me to include such thing. We had both POV with Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Oblivion, Skyrim, Deus ex human, Fallout 4, etc. I enjoyed all these games, mostly with first POV during combat, but yes, with the third POV while exploring. Seeing the character creator in that game a while ago and being satisfied with what I saw, I was convinced that this game would have necessarily the third POV as usual lol. I guess no. New trend, maybe not, you are probably right, but then they came back to an outdated useless trend in my opinion. But so be it, not a big deal, just hoping that this " trend " won't continue with other games in the future. I find rpgs less engaging that way.

On to the second area now and the world environment building is really taking me back to Kotor II (it's a kind of space station/spaceport, even space travel uses a navigation computer system similar to the Ebon Hawk.)
I really like the score the ambient music is unobtrusive and has an elegantly relaxed ethereal style.

Why the hell would you subject yourself to that borefest again, SirSourpuss??? Don't really see what Andromeda has to do with it aside from the space angle. From what I've seen it's basically a non open world Fallout in space. Right down to the same skill system. It even looks like its still on the Creation Engine. Only less shitty. *g* Can't wait to play myself. Hopefully in a month...

Don’t forget Larian Studios, I’ve honestly come to like them more than Obsidian with the amount of detail to roleplaying and freedom they’ve provided with Original Sin 2. Really looking forward to seeing what they’ll do with their next game.

I also concur with the comparisons to KOTOR 2, in a lot of ways this game feels closer to that game than New Vegas, which is great to me as KOTOR 2 stands as my favorite western RPG Like KOTOR 2, and unlike New Vegas, you can bring two companions with you and said companions will interject into the conversations you’ll have with other NPCs and sometines share vanter with each other on the ship. All of that was pretty adamant in KOTOR 2, where New Vegas was more like a Bethesda title in that regard. The hub planets as well, where you are free to pick which hub you wanna visit in whatever order from a navigational man. Heck Groundbreak even looks like Nar Shaddaa. Not even mentioning there being a robot companion stored in your ship, which you don’t own, that you have to travel the galaxy for the parts to fix it ala the broken down HK-47 stored on the Ebon Hawk in KOTOR 2.

Yeah, essentially the guts of the game are the usual Fallout nuts n bolts: inventory, repair, workbench, health & consumables, stat's, perk's, Vats & combat bolted on to a Kotor II planetary exploration star system. As soon as I saw the ships blast doors on Groundbreak I thought Kotor II. I really hope Obsidian will support modding for this game, if it does it has limitless potential.
