This is not an issue for our well promoted vets but in a weaker party it often spells doom. Especially for a two person party. Because it seems to be 'the way' people learn that level players run the thing to the end and get killed or run so fast tea, mates cannot keep up and the poison eats away at them. I also do not think it is all that much faster in the grand scheme of things.. Weak or dubious party? Work you way through the enemy with the team. COME AT ME BROS!

Rushing minimizes the coordination required when crawling. Having recently revisited DAIMP it still puzzles me how inconsistent the AI behaves concerning "aggro". Sometimes you can run right past them without any reaction. Sometimes you end up forming a conga line behind you.

In the beginning? Agreed. Group up and move room to room.

I've been wondering about this too. I try to get a feel for who I'm with. I generally wait for someone else to grab the torch first and see what they do. The ones that drive me nuts are the ones who want to stop and open every gold pot along the way. I don't care if they want to go room by room or rush ahead. It's the farting around and opening every pot along the way that makes me a little irritable. Go back and get that after!
Last night, I did a run with a pug and myself. They weren't a new player and could more than handle themselves, so I ran ahead with the torch and had a crowd of Sha-Brytols surrounding me once I got there. That was fun! I'm apprehensive when you get the torch on darkspawn zone 4. Sometimes we go room by room and pick them off, sometimes one will run ahead with the torch.
I guess it's a case by case basis on what to do with the torch, but agreed, with weaker players, go room by room.

If I have a fast character, I'll pick up the torch and run to the end evading enemies. If not, I'll wait someone else to take it first.

Same, if I'm Zither I'll either run ahead with the torch after doing a fast beat or buff the person with the torch and follow along so they can get there quickly and I can pick off any enemies along the way. Or my DW rogues with the dagger that increases movement (bloody bargain I think?), I'll run on ahead.
That reminds me, I joined a lobby last night and it was Routine, the two players seemed to lose health when they were out of the area of the torch so I let them go at their own pace with the torch while I went ahead and killed enemies, opened doors, etc. Another person joined and I saw they had a guardian room. I know this person is not a weak player as I've played with them before. I knew something must have been going on for them to have low health so I ran over to help with whatever was going on. Then I rubberbanded like crazy and died. It must have happened to them too, lol.

Torch run can be OK under circumstances of, 1. I have faith that I can survive 2. I have faith that left-behind-teammates can survive without too much trouble. But yes I agree too, in the beginning, better group up and clear area to area like everyone says. edit: if there's a fabulous Sarrebot in your team, better grab the torch and run/back fast like flash. Don 't make your Saarebas wait.

I remember the first time I encountered the torch, it took me by surprise. It isn't covered in the Proving Grounds! I guess it's the same idea as the suicide mission in ME2 with the barrier. I just look at what the biggest priority is (holding the torch and dropping it to crack open pots every 2 seconds isn't one of them ), whether it be staying together and going room by room, or dashing ahead and lighting the fire first. The agents comment as if you're meant to stick together as a group and go to the end, but that isn't always the best way. That's why I usually like to leave it up to somebody else to decide. Unless they're a pot cracker. Then I'm grabbing that torch and dashing for the finish line.
