For anyone that has a 4k resolution TV or computer monitor, Is it really nice of an upgrade from 1080p HD TV?
I'm thinking of taking a dive into it, but I wanted to hear some opinions.
..especially with Mass Effect Andromeda on PS4 Pro upcoming in the future.

I have a 28" 4K monitor. When displaying 4K content it looks very, very nice. The only trouble is the hardware needed to drive that content at a respectable frame rate.
I did watch that ME:A "4K" trailer on it, in 4K resolution and wasn't that impressed. DA:I in 4K looks better, but in fairness, that game has had nearly a year of patching etc, whereas ME:A is still in development. So, time - and room - to improve on that front.
If you're getting it for the PS - and have the budget for it - then you may as well, I guess more movies etc will start becoming available in 4K in the next couple of years, in addition to the games that will become available.

My hubby is playing Gears of War 4 on his 55 inch 4k TV right now. It is sooooooo pretty. I can't wait to see what the ps4 pro does for us!

Sorry that I posted in wrong area.
Thanks for response! I want a gaming rig but I'm trying to spread the love with my fam.
My son wants a PS4 so I thought.. why not a Pro. Im just on fence about a 4k TV, ya know? Otherwise, I think the TVs we have are good enough. I don't want to skip the deals on Cyber Monday and holiday seasons. Then regret it with MEA release. Lol. x.x
In the Witcher thread, BSN members helped convinced me of getting deeper in the series by finishing W2 (I was on fence) while W3: CE was sitting on my shelf after purchase. I know in the end, it's my decision and I blame no one if I regret it but I value everyone's opinion.

My wife doesn't play any games at all but we've played Gears of War together (only game series ever). She enjoyed it. It's like a movie to her. I told her about Gears of War 4 and she saw a vid on it. I told her we are getting old, even the protagonists' got kids. Lol. I might be wrong but it seemed like it.

That's fair enough - if there are other people in the picture, a 4K TV with a PS Pro certainly isn't a bad idea.
Just be aware of frame rates at that resolution. I have a - pretty - good gaming PC, i7 4790K @ 4GHz with 2x GTX 980 Ti GPUs and get framerates that I am happy with in DA:I at 4K, but DA:I is not a shooter, and I don't use the action combat much.
Witcher 3 in 4K looks utterly bonkers gorgeous but due to the nature of the combat the uneven frame rates became too much of an issue.
Given the way console hardware works, I'm guessing the frame rate will be locked at anywhere from 24fps to 30fps for titles like ME:A which is likely to be demanding on CPU as well as GPU.

That's a solid rig. I've never personally have seen 50 to 60 fps. I think 30 fps and below (for cinematics) on console. Spoiler ahead - My wife was so sad to see Dom's wife then what happened to Dom. It got her hooked. Spoiler End. I'll definitely look into it next month. You're always a help, bro. Don't worry, my wife watches Housewives of whatever and I just want to take a shot everytime an argument breaks out on it. I would be drunk..

Would I buy a 4k tv? No. I mean I could go buy a large screen 4k tv right now if I really wanted to.
My father has a 4k tv. He only bought one because the thing was on sale otherwise he would never of bought it. My neighbor said the same thing.
The other thing is that I already have a big screen tv that works fine. Why buy something that I don't need? The same with a PS4 pro. I won't buy one. When the next generation consoles are available, whenever that happens, I will buy one.

That's always th dilemma with new (or newish) technology products. Something better is always just around the corner. Fear of missing out is a real thing for some, which is why there are people who get the new iPhone each year, without any real justification.
If the question is 'does 4K look better?', then the answer is, I think, an unequivocal yes.
If the question is 'do I need 4K to enjoy this game/movie/whatever?', then the answer is likely no.
Still, the PS Pro might also run non 4K games at a higher frame rate than the PS4 (or whatever comes after it).
I'm ridiculously biased, through , so my advice - 4K monitor and beastly gaming PC.

I did watch that ME:A "4K" trailer on it, in 4K resolution and wasn't that impressed. That's because the PS4 Pro doesn't render in true 4K resolution, but upscales a lower resolution image using some hardware tricks (like selective sharpening) to make it look more detailed than it really is. True 4K rendering looks definitely better, less "muddy" in a sense. The real advantage of the PS4 Pro would be in running games generally better, with better graphical quality options, at the same resolutions of the PS4. Buying it for 4K gaming is not a good idea, imho, as you'll spend way too much on a monitor that doesn't get fully utilized. Sony did say that some titles may run at native 4K resolution instead of using the upscaling trick, but they won't be the norm and the hardware is not powerful enough to run games like Call of Duty, Uncharted and similar games. Maybe less graphically intensive titles could run at that resolution (but why?). Image quality always trumps resolution, assuming that you can run games comfortably at 900p minimum (which most modern hardware should do, even low end stuff). This push for 4K gaming makes financial sense only if you will be getting a general image quality improvement. I'm afraid that, because of the hardware limitations, many games would prioritize resolution over image quality as a way to get more sales from the 4K fad. Hardware actually capable of handling 4K games at very high quality settings still costs hundreds of dollars.

Agree, TW3 in 4k does look omgwtfbbq1bonkers in 4K. Sadly, I can only run stable at 1080P in this game. The most important thing with a 4k TV purchase is how far away from the screen you sit determines whether can see the improvement. Just, now I'm posting on my 15inch laptop which is about 1 foot away from me and subjectively looks about twice the size of a 50inch tv about 7 foot away.

I have a 1440p 27 inch monitor and W3 and DAI look absolutely gorgeous! The difference to my 1080p laptop was already pretty significant. Also helps that my monitor was expensive and has far superior colors (IPS panel). So I can only imagine how awe-inspiring jumping from 1080 to 4K would be... HOWEVER, like it was mentioned before, even with Pascal you need to shell out A LOT of money for a GPU that can run it at a decent frame rate. So it's definitely NOT worth it. For PC anyway. 4K TV would make more sense with a PS4 Pro and a 4K bluray player.
Imo 1440p is still a great compromise. I had the same dilemma last year when I built my first gaming PC. At the time 4K was still insane. And most of the monitors (and TVs) were poor quality. That has probably changed in the meantime. But I'd always go for a great 1440p or even 1080p monitor over a cheap 4K one with crap colors and awful backlight bleeding.

The PS4 Pro is not a real 4K console. It runs at 1800p, whereas real 4K is 2160p. They should rather call it "3.33K".
Still it is a very high resolution which is pretty and all, but are you guys aware of the low frame rate? Mass Effect Andromeda will run at 30 frames per second on the PS4 Pro. For a 2017 AAA shooter game this low frame rate is just antiquated.

Yeah that's the other thing. No way can a console pull off real 4K gaming...
I was pretty shocked how bad the frame rate was in ME3 on Xbox last night when I started a vanguard playthrough the first time this year. Very choppy. The cutscenes run like crap too. I guess I've gotten spoiled by the PC. Never bothered me before.
30fps is fine for me on PC actually but no way was the Xbox putting even that out last night. Everything lagged and was so slow... Like when DAI ran at 20fps on my laptop because I refused to turn down the resolution. ;P
4K gaming on console will be the same shit. Hell, Witcher 3 at 1080p lags badly on console in Novigrad! Big mistake jumping to "4K" when 1080p isn't even stable yet. But hey, it looks prettttttty...

Big mistake jumping to "4K" when 1080p isn't even stable yet. But hey, it looks prettttttty... Agree, a smooth 30fps experience is one thing, but consoles often struggle to keep that constant especially in high stress situations (which is when you need good framerates the most). I think the consoles are starting to fumble with these forced upgrades that need gimmicks like "4K gaming" to sell. Maybe not many remember, but the PS2 could run the majority of games at 60fps, and they were rather graphically demanding for the time. Modern hardware sure can make scenes look good (or should I say ok, compared to what a modern PC can do), but the low and uneven framerates are a sign that performance hasn't gone up as expected. It is more than the previous gen, but not as much as people think. Consoles used to be on the bleeding edge hardware wise, giving you the best performance for the price. And they were a lot simpler and user friendly to use. Now you have mandatory game installations, slow downs, complex interfaces, apps to do all sorts of things and not one is as good as using dedicated devices, and stupid paid schemes for online services that are absolutely free on PC. Want to have voice chat on Xbox? Gotta pay up. Want to have auto updates on PS3? Gotta pay up. Want to have cloud saves on PS4? Yep, better pay up. Oh, you want to record that amazing gameplay and share it on YouTube with your friends on Xbox? Better pay as well. Multiplayer games on Xbox? Not if you don't pay. Like, seriously.
Is the service provided any better than what Steam, Origin or anyone else ever provided on PC? No, and in some instances is actually worse or more limited. But they want you to pay and pay a lot, which just rises the total cost of ownership and makes a proper PC look more appealing and affordable in the long run (as well as less headache inducing). It's nice to have many features on modern consoles, but do we really need gaming devices that try to do everything and half-ass all of it?
