Unlike the narrator, when I read the description on the patent, I didn't get the impression it would be about doing weapon repair.
Armor might show dents, weapons might show wear, but that doesn't necessarily mean you have to do mx … ala Fallout.
That's what the weapon smith is for.
So yeah, I think this is going to be more cosmetic than another thing we need to do …
For sure, I don't want to drink x amount of water, eat y amount of food or find z amount of iron or to maintain body, armor and weapons.
On the other hand, I do want to spend at least 80 hours of game play in each run, searching for elf root. my thoughts exactly. Though I do wonder if bio can do a survival mode built in to the higher difficulties. I don't know about the technical challenges of doing basically a game and then a game with survival, but I know players who'd enjoy doing it.

Though that system mentioned can effect the environment, too, which is way more interesting. I guess they can use that to enact environmental changes over time. The guy in the vid mentioned the idea of having changes due to seasons, like ice melting as spring happens. Also, I'd think this could maybe apply to erosion we could theoretically see happen in a desert like the Silent Plains, or the Anderfells. Maybe even have something to do with shifting sand dunes? This sort of implementation though I'm totally down for. Dynamic Weather and Seasonal Changes are high on my wishlist. AI erosion and weathering do sound cool. I'd assume these environmental effects determined by AI could also be applied to the effects of spells, so it could be used as a way to enhance environmental damage/interactivity. In other words, this AI that determines how an object reacts to degradation over time can allow all pieces of the environment to react to being "degraded" by a spell or attack, ie burned, melted, corroded, blown away, etc. The advantage to an AI doing it is that it costs less resources and time than having a developer handcraft the destruction effects individually and instead the effect can just be applied dynamically to everything that's marked as destructible by the AI? This is just a guess on my end on how that could be used, of course. This as well. Having destructible environments in general would be a huge plus.

If this is cosmetic only I just hope bio doesn't get as exuberant as they did with the blood effects from DA2.

Yeah, I can see the aging and degradation being used for cosmetic and atmospheric flavor but I would rather it stay strictly in that area. My sword breaking every 3rd mob isn't going to create a feeling of immersion, it's just going to get frustrating. The best kind of immersion, I think, is done through good writing, music, and atmosphere. Weapons and armor breaking never helped me suspend my disbelief, on the contrary, that always brought me out of the experience because that mechanic forced me to stop interacting with the game world in the way I wanted. I always feel that it's a mechanic meant to max out your play time without adding extra content and it also has the downside of making you not want to engage with the combat as often after a while.

I don't know about the technical challenges of doing basically a game and then a game with survival, but I know players who'd enjoy doing it.
Assuming there is actual food in the game, I'd like a survival mode to be an option for every difficulty. I enjoy the concept of immersing myself by needing food/drink/sleep if its properly provided for by the game (ie there are actual inns/beds/a camp system to use and multiple kinds of food). But I don't think it should require a higher difficulty level of combat. Why can't I play on easy mode, but still need to eat every 10-12 in-game hours or suffer debuffs? Bonus points if I can adjust the need degredation rate to my own liking, cus developers typically don't get it right out-of-the-box except for actual survival-focused games, in my experience.

I can certainly appreciate that as well I was just thinking of how Fallout 4 did this sort of thing. I do think that the best way about going about this sort of thing would be for the devs to design these things as being in the game anyways, whatever things could be used for 'survival', and still have them usable whatever the mode. For the non survival players do a system where such things could provide buffs for your character should you chose to use them (like GRB or I think RDR 2). These things can be used to improve your stats like 'add five to accuracy' or '10% extra crit chance'...things like that. And then the 'survival mode' could be activated to actually start making your character lose stuff and stats if they do not keep up with it.

Yup, much like how friendly fire is an option for all difficulties in DAI and not directly tied difficulty level as in DAO. I do like the pick and choose gameplay menu variants we got with Trespasser. I would not mind an added survival mode to the mix.

I dislike it when games make me actually eat food/sleep outside of just being a source of getting HP back. Even if it's just optional to eat, I barely touch in-game food *she says, side-eyeing one page of her FFXIV inventory which just consists of untouched food she got as quest rewards*

The hero of fereldan not on here? Harvester? Harvester would definitley be in consideration and the HOF could probably be lower on the list.
