I will say that with Corrine as Game Director, John Epler as Creative Director and Patrick Weekes as Lead Writer, the future of this franchise is now in the control of folks whose politics swing so far to the left .... That’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s certainly not going to kill any of us if Dragon Age introduces a transgender love interest or makes being non-binary an option for the PC. The neckbeards will howl that the series has been ruined, but who cares?

can't speak for bierkrug but from my POV this has nothing to do with her(?) Being trans but with other factors on her bio. Afterall Patrick Weekes is also LGBTA and is a part of that community and I love their work as well. And I know *some* put that label on things and make wild assumptions but Dorian and Krem are great characters and Cass is one of the most attractive characters in the setting. "her(?)"???? It's her. It's HER. No (?). Period. I'm sorry, I'm not going to be polite about this. You're going to have to forgive me, but living not far away from a border with a country there's WAR in and worrying for our Ukrainian brothers and sisters can put a person a little on an edge. I have little patience for stuff like this, which I think I've already established. I trust Corinne to deliver us a great game, based on the fact that DA devs seem happy with her at the helm. I don't need to nitpick her bio. you misunderstand me. No nitpick required as I was just expressing genuine confusion. I have heard conflicting reports on her identity and until such time as I was sure I was trying to hedge my bets. Ironically I was trying to avoid this type of reaction in the first place but I suppose my question has been answered either way. As for the Ukraine i am concerned about that situation. I think it has the potential to get very nasty and I am way more concerned about it then the identity of some game director either way. And indeed I am even worried that this could have an effect then her identity. Either way. Hell I don't even really care about her identity either way. But the thing is that since the situation with the Ukraine has NOTHING to do with Bioware we cannot talk about it per the site rules. Indeed I am expecting a very nasty cease and desist order over this whole thing but alas I also felt that I needed to clarify my position and standing on both issues since you launched a preemptive a derogatory attack without checking.

2022: What you wrote was just ridiculous and would never happen 2024: So to get the good ending for DA4 you need to convince the Archon to introduce a universal basic income and then defeat the 20 TERFs of Doom

Just popping on to say I support the inclusion of every gender sexuality and race and that BioWare has made it clear that they are a company that also supports diversity and inclusion in their games, and I don’t think they are bothered by incel twats on the internet who disagree. As a matter of fact I think they hope the “alphas” offended by it will weed themselves right out of the fan base.

Drop it.
A developer’s sexuality, gender identity, race, religion, whatever is not fair game.

I’ll drop the issue, but mark my words: if I have to do a main quest where I travel to Weisshaupt to ask the First Warden to make the Joining oath more inclusive by dropping the line “Brothers and sisters,” I’m asking for a refund.

I will say that with Corrine as Game Director, John Epler as Creative Director and Patrick Weekes as Lead Writer, the future of this franchise is now in the control of folks whose politics swing so far to the left they make Martin Luther King Jr. look like David Duke. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s certainly not going to kill any of us if Dragon Age introduces a transgender love interest or makes being non-binary an option for the PC. What I don’t want to see is the lore being completely re-worked to remove any potentially “offensive” content. I don’t want to go into DA4 and learn that, oh wait, everything you knew about the Qunari was wrong and they would never even contemplate sewing a mage’s mouth shut, the darkspawn now have a range of personalities and interests beyond serving the Old Gods and destroying all life as we know it, and the Chant of Light has been updated to exclusively use “xe”, “xem” and “xyr” pronouns. If that puts me at odds with the majority of DA fans, so be it. They're just people. What you wrote was just ridiculous and would never happen. Come on, let's focus on the fact that Mike Laidlaw, David Gaider, and Mark Darrah came out in support of these people, as well as the current developers. John and Corrine must be doing something right. I would ask why you doubt them but you've made that pretty clear.
Hm..
DA4, I'm sure will have great and entertaining dialogue with flying exchange of repartees.
These DA4 images look great! 43 images Scroll down the article. I like the one with the Griphon.

Just going to mention here the difference in how they treated the departure of Matt Goldman and Christian Dailey. The latter gets a proper official sendoff and thanks for their contribution. He also is upbeat and positive about the team he is leaving behind. The former we wouldn't even have known about but for a studio leak of an internal memo and only now, after several months, do we learn of his successor, with no official mention of the person that John Epler is replacing. We will likely never learn what the true situation was with MG because keeping silent was probably part of the deal with Bioware over his exit and clearly they have no intention of breaking it but something was clearly badly wrong there for it to have been dealt with in that way.

These DA4 images look great! 43 images Scroll down the article. I like the one with the Griphon. I would take issue with the article describing these as new images. There is nothing "new" there since all these have been in the public domain since 2020. To be honest, if the blueprint was only finalised in 2021 then none of these concept pieces can be considered definite for inclusion in the next game. As "concept" suggests they were simply ideas being pushed around by the team. Had the blueprint been finalised in March 2020, as we originally thought, then it might be valid to think that this reflected what had finally made it into the game but, based off the latest information, the only images and characters that might be regarded as confirmed are those which were issued with the short stories at the end of last year. If the blueprint was finalised at the very beginning of 2021, then some of the images put out in the early part of the year (by Matt Goldman?) of the arcane archer, Grey Wardens and Crows might also be taken as indicative of inclusion. I agree that the images do look great and generally prefer a positive rather than a negative approach. However, I am mindful of the fact that the 2013 DAI promo trailer and sample game play looked great at the time but ultimately much that was promised did not make it into the final game.

I mean I don't think we will know how the game looks until it comes out but the trailer did make note of them just being concept images in the first place. So while we have always been speculating on what it could mean in terms of the final product and how many nations we could be visiting or what the final gameplay will be experiencing I just think that its also unfair to read too much into it...one way or another. Like those pictures weren't supposed to show what the final blue print is but as concept art they were supposed to be showing off the concepts they were thinking about doing and, from comments I have read from time to time, the whole point about concept art in such an early stage of production is to get people thinking about their own processes. Get the creative juices flowing. So, we'll see, but this is what we need to keep in mind.

So, we'll see, but this is what we need to keep in mind. Absolutely, although this is why I'm really looking forward to getting some sort of definite information in the not too distant future. I also wonder how we should view that teaser trailer narrated by Varric. The fact that we would be dealing with "demons, dragons, darkspawn, even the Dread Wolf" was not too revelatory since we have been dealing with the first 3 since DAO and the Dread Wolf was always a sort of given after Trespasser. Also, the "time for a new hero" was only reiterating what had been said before, that Trespasser was meant to have tied off the Inquisitor's story. Should we regard "no magic hand, no ancient prophesy" as a definite confirmation we will be getting back to the regular person just caught up in events with nothing but their own innate abilities to aid them? (as suggested in the earlier behind the scenes video). At the time it was hinted that the people shown were indicative of factions we would be associating with in the next game but if the blueprint had yet to be signed off, is this still the case? Could they even have been characters associated with multi-player that will no longer be appearing at all? I hope not. That teaser trailer is a puzzle though. Why bring it out at all at the point they did if those aspects showcased were not fairly definite for the main game? Was it simply to reassure fans at a time when two major figures were departing the studio? Let's hope they don't leave it too much longer before we get some answers to this.

Was it simply to reassure fans at a time when two major figures were departing the studio? Let's hope they don't leave it too much longer before we get some answers to this. Lot of different stuff to unpack here. 1. The whole thing about factions is speculation on our part. Now I think there is a non zero chance that we are right and I would be thrilled by that...but the Varric trailer or the BTS trailer made no such promises on them. Other then showing off that Wardens, Crows, Mages, and a few other organizations will be involved...which is pretty much a given with what we know about DA. 2. I would think that the stuff at the end of the Varric Trailer was stuff that was set in stone. Again I would think even if the blueprint wasn't finalized at that point (and thaat is an assertion I doubt personally) they would have at least had a good idea of where they wanted to go. Again not a gurantee but I view both trailers as indicitive of what they want to do not what they will do. 3. I think a lot what into the release of the trailers when they did and a lot of differnet moving parts. First off at this point I do not think they specifically put the trailers together because Darrah and Hudson was leaving. I think at this time that the timing ended up being a happy accident. What I now think happened is that EA was probably keen on marketing the game, Bio was probably keen on putting their work out there, as a reassurance and a little bread crumb trail. Then Cyberpunk happened which has been suggested to have caused a reevuluation in marketing, again, and then the whole 'retooling away from MP happened'. Both of these issues combined probably made BioWare want to step away from the marketing for awhile until they had actual stuff to show off. Now it will be frustrating if we don't get further marketing on the game till like 2023, which could happen based on the current theories of when the game will come out, but again I can't help but view the release of all the major trailers and marketing for DA as being kind of a mistake...at least from a practical viewpoint. A dammed if you do dammed if you don't mistake given we need the reassurance they are still making the danged thing however at present I think they know that paltry reassurance may not go over well so they will need solid information to show off before they show off anything else. 4. The Multiplayer character bits is certainly possible. I remember reading an exchange somewhere where someone was asking about the mysterious characters and speculating on their companioness and a dev said something like 'unless...' Which I do not know if I said it at the time but even the thought did occur to me at the time they could then represent multiplayer skins for different multiplayer characters...while this is a horrible example think Fortnight ...Now I still doubt BioWare did that. I still personally doubt the game was a full on MP MMO of the nature of Anthem or Fortnight or being 'always online'. But even in that case I do wonder how many of those characters will dissapear. I mean again keeping in mind 'concept art' but there are a few things to consider here. 1. Even if it was an Always online game you still need quest givers, mission helpers, companions (after a fashion), merchants, random NPCs to build out the world. You could port any of these over to a SP game just as easily. 2. We have seen references to multiple characters appearing throughout the through threads in TVN and the short stories. Like Strife, Vaea, those two Grey Wardens (my memory is failing me hard right now), now no gurantee they wll appear in a significant way however it still is worhty to note that BioWare is keeping to a general continuity here. 3. And it is still possible that this is some kind of companion concept just maybe not a traditional one...like BioWare is just being cheeky to drive speculation and they are companions...or maybe evil companions.

They have been the center of a lot of controversy themselves going all the way back to Mass Effect 2 when the narrative when they released the opening cinematic as "spoiling the entire plot of the game" and then when it was found out to be the opening cinematic it was still a bad thing. Combine in the "ending of Mass Effect 3", "missing content of Inquisition", and how quiet they were about Andromeda and Anthem. I think being quiet is just the approach BioWare takes now because it has burned the multiple times in the past.

the darkspawn now have a range of personalities and interests beyond serving the Old Gods and destroying all life as we know it Um…Awakening already kind of did that. Not only that, it briefly featured a Hurlock that was nothing but helpful to us.
Almost feels like people didn't actually play the game.

the darkspawn now have a range of personalities and interests beyond serving the Old Gods and destroying all life as we know it Um…Awakening already kind of did that. Yes and no. The Disciples were no longer driven to serve the Old Gods, but they remained as violent as ever, just slightly more articulate. In fact, sentience drove half of them completely insane, as they were robbed of their purpose. In the end, the Architect’s experiment was a grand failure. The trend in modern fantasy has been to avoid the notion that an entire race is naturally “evil,” as that has racist undertones. (That strikes me as a human-centric POV as well as needless fussing, but that’s another debate.) So I would not be surprised if the darkspawn get a major update in DA4 to make them more diverse and also to get rid of that nasty broodmother business. I sincerely hope that I’m wrong and that in two years, you’ll all get to come back here, point fingers at me and laugh at my nonsensical rantings. I’ve got a great recipe for crow meat.

The incels will howl that the series has been ruined, but who cares? What I don’t want to see is the lore being completely re-worked to remove any potentially “offensive” content. I don’t want to go into DA4 and learn that, oh wait, everything you knew about the Qunari was wrong and they would never even contemplate sewing a mage’s mouth shut, the darkspawn now have a range of personalities and interests beyond serving the Old Gods and destroying all life as we know it, and the Chant of Light has been updated to exclusively use “xe”, “xem” and “xyr” pronouns. If that puts me at odds with the majority of DA fans, so be it. If the Architect is still around there might be deviation among the darkspawn anyway, lore friendly and all. And I disagree with some interpretations about Qunari life I've seen floating around but not about sewing mages' mouths shut. Mind you, there's probably a discussion to be had about whether lore is a static thing or an evolving thing and what does and does not qualify as 'legitimate' reasons for changing it. I'd find the qunari dull if they never changed while simultaneously objecting to an out-of-nowhere cultural about face. But then the DA team has never given me a reason to worry about that.

Yes and no. The Disciples were no longer driven to serve the Old Gods, but they remained as violent as ever, just slightly more articulate. Maybe I am misremembering, but I could have sworn that in my play-through the Architect's messenger (if allowed to live) decided to help people traveling on the roads. Doesn't sound all that violent and mindless to me, but honestly I can't remember the specifics.

"The darkspawn messanger, set free after joining the Wardens in the battle for Amaranthine, struck out on his own. The city soon buzzed with stories of a cloacked but lisping figure who aided travelers in danger. At the same time, reports of isolated cases of the darkspawn disease emerged. No one connected the two."

Doesn't sound all that violent and mindless to me, but honestly I can't remember the specifics. You are quite correct and the sad part was that he was still in danger of infecting them with the blight but I don't think he was aware of that, so his help could have unfortunate negative consequences. Nevertheless, it was true that he did want to help them as a result of the mercy that was shown to him. The concept was interesting because it showed that the call of the Old Gods could be nullified but the idea that the Architect did it by using Grey Warden blood was a bit peculiar considering the Wardens can still hear the Old Gods and it gradually becomes more intrusive as they age, so why would it block the call for the darkspawn? I also wonder what would have happened with the magnified false calling, although funnily enough it only seemed to affect Grey Wardens whereas you would have thought it would have started a false Blight. If the Architect lived (which I assume would be the case whatever you did in DAA since presumably he had the same effective immortality as Corypheus) I wonder what became of him and his darkspawn. I think they said that he was originally meant to appear in DAI but they decided against it.

So I would not be surprised if the darkspawn get a major update in DA4 to make them more diverse and also to get rid of that nasty broodmother business. Why would they cancel broodmothers? Political correctness?
I certainly hope this would not be the case that they would change the lore because the lore was ... whatever.
I think not having broodmothers in DA4 would be acceptable, but I would certainly hope that the broodmother lore would not be changed just because of an emphasized agenda.
....
From what I read, the controversial characters in Dragonspear were portrayed reasonably (Minsc, Sefana, Jaheira and Mizhena), but the controversy was overblown and defiantly fanned by one of the Dragonspeer devs. Unfortunately the reasonable response by the Game director came to late ...
I have Dragonspear on Steam, but I have never played it. Maybe I should after I finish Shadow of Mordor ...

I'd find the qunari dull if they never changed while simultaneously objecting to an out-of-nowhere cultural about face. But then the DA team has never given me a reason to worry about that. I think in general lore can change either as our own understanding of it changes or as the internal forces of the game change for logical reasons. Like bad retcon...changing Qarinus to Ventus. I don't think the world even offered a reason for the change, though I could be wrong, but even then it would be quite a reason to change it considering they were afraid that we would be confused over the name. But I generally don't have an issue or see any changes to Qun lore. Remember we do not know much about the Qunari from an in universe or an out of universe perspective, by design their culture and religion is isolated and steeped in mystery...and keep in mind they are very much into being the world to their own world and very much about group identifications. So, I just don't see the apparent contradictions here that some have brought up.
