Seriously. I don't understand what pets are for. They're a bunch of work, with various itinerant costs (including opportunity costs), and then they don't live very long.
Owning a pet is a massive expense with sorrow at the end.
Why do people do that?

Love. And a desire to not be alone.
And, specifically in my case, a hatred of rodents in my house.

The same could be said for children other than the obvious answers of "passing on your genes" and "proliferation of the species". But also massive expense that can end in sorrow and it's not a path for me. But furry kids? Yes, all day long. As Mousey said, love. I grew up in a household that had pets, so very early I felt attached to them as members of the family. I was an only child, so perhaps that ingrained even more since they were like surrogate siblings. And maybe some folks are just naturally - through innate personality or through nurture or a combination of both - drawn to animals and/or pets in general. I can say that very often at social gatherings, if someone's pet is around, it's like they KNOW the "animal friends" from those who aren't. I get zeroed in on every time by the party dog or cat and we'll end up hanging out together for most of the festivities. There are also practical standpoints. Our three dogs, for instance, also serve as guard dogs. Yes, a home alarm system could also be installed and serve a similar purpose - well, other than the alarm will only make noise and alert authorities. If we are at home, it would alert us same as a dog so we could prepare to defend, but the alarm system itself could not defend - could not put itself between you and harm's way to try and bite the intruder. For us, that is not the primary purpose of our dogs - we have them because we love having pets - but that is, technically, a practical use. Our pets, in particular, also give my husband and I a good, charitable sense of helping/doing good/altruism/what-have-you. All of ours are rescues. They are animals that would otherwise have remained abandoned or probably perished without either us adopting them or, in the case of our cat, directly intervening to provide medical care to a feral kitten with either a birth defect or early permanent injury.

Because I've had them all my life.
I lived for a few months without them when the first batch died of old age.
Life felt wrong. The house was too quiet. There was no one to eat the leftovers that were unwanted.
My life has dogs in it. My brain says it's not correct otherwise.

My two cats help me manage my depression and help take the edge off the worse days. Things people can't help me with because I struggle when around people for too long so at those times I need to be alone. With the cats, I no longer need to be alone and all they need to do is sit near me and purr which they do an amazing job of. Worth every penny I spend on food, vet and kitty litter.

Seriously. I don't understand what pets are for. They're a bunch of work, with various itinerant costs (including opportunity costs), and then they don't live very long. Owning a pet is a massive expense with sorrow at the end. Why do people do that? Indeed. I agree with the gist of your message here. When I was a kid, I had a tremendous dog, a bitch. Wild, fierce, quick, (terrier). Loyal to the bone and appeared to think she was married to me. Only thing she was afraid of was thunder storms. She almost always appeared to understand what I wanted, or wanted her to do. Never trained her. Never put a leash on her. She could do almost anything. She was even pretty good at climbing trees. When she eventually died, it tore the heart out of my chest. I swore to never have another dog again. Unfortunately, my sister has instead gone through a few dogs. And since I came to walk them and even take them on hikes in the woods,.. Yes, they died too, eventually. Now, I've been through and seen enough shit to not be particularly sensitive anymore, but at the same time it's a sort of trauma-fatigue. There are things I can't readily remember or remember at all, because my brain hides it from me. So yeah, I suspect I could do without dogs dying on me. Can't stop my sister though. On the other hand, there's a lot of research pointing to that dog owners live longer, have lower blood pressure, etc. But that's not for me. I don't want one. Besides, I took an oath. I had another 'pet' for awhile. I lived alone in this place and a fairly large spider moved in with me. I called her 'Fida', don't know the species. It was kinda nice coming home late at nights and see her in her favorite spot in the roof. I usually had my window open and lots of bugs of all kinds, so she fed well. She stayed for roughly three years and became slightly bigger I think. Then one day she was gone. She may have died of old age, but I prefer to assume she climbed out of the window, maybe to find a mate, because I never found any corpse.

Depends on the person like with anything.
I like fish, I can sit and watch them in a pond all day and they aren’t that bad to look after. When they die it’s sad but as a kid growing up it’s a bit of an early life trainer really.

Are pets actually that expensive? Compared to what? Compared to not having them. Also, depending on the pet they might constrain other choices, such as where you can live, or how long you can be away.

I used to own a German Shepherd that would send potential villains screaming and running before they even think of robbing me. Now I have a Yorkie that wets itself when I invite mates over for a drink, so I don't know, the heads up is nice I guess.

Pets either consume too much resources or die too easily (cheap small ones). My chicks died and my sister had to give the kitteh to someone else. Also they are no offsprings and dynasty is in danger if pets taken instead.

When I got a cat I found it to be the most effective calming tool in my life from the different stresses and frustrations that day to day activities with humanity can cause. The cost of having the cat is probably paid for itself in other ways that I have encountered throughout the years and it will be sad when he does pass on, but to me that shows a level of impact they have had on my life to prove the cost was worth it.
There are different things for different people, I personally don't like travelling. I find the cost to be on the high side for only a week or two of travelling and not to mention how often the saying of needing a vacation after my vacation seems to apply. So what some people might spend on a trip once a year could be close to what it can cost to have a pet for a year. If I do go away I have a couple of trusted friends that can feed my pet once a day and make sure my mail is taken in.

"Expense" isn't an issue -- for pets or anything else -- if it's an expense you are able and willing to pay, and if the return is worthwhile (which just about all pet owners will generally agree that it is).
And why get hung up on their passing rather than taking the time that you do have with them to enjoy their company? It's all about how you look at things.
Besides, there are many different kinds of pets (both in animal and breed) that can suit whatever different preferences you might have.

Pets are for comfort. They also leave fur all over the place. Which can lead to allergies. I've had pets for a number of years in the past. I really loved them but I have no interest in having them again.

It's not so much expense than "upkeep". You get compassion, activities to do, sense of pride and accomplishment better than any EA lootbox could ever give you, bad behaviour and worries, company. It's basically high intensity social activity on a somewhat simpler level than with humans.
