In my opinion most gaming headsets are not really worth their money. I'd always go for quality headphones and buy an additional microphone if needed. I have one and I can't remember the last time I've actually taken it out of the drawer. Might obviously be different if you plan on using it a lot in MP. I have had several gaming headsets in the past but at some point I recognized that what I could get for let's say 150€ in the headphone department is vastly superior than what you get for the same price or even more in the "gaming headset" department. My go to headphones have been the Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro (80 Ohm version) - funny thing: the Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Gaming Headset is basically the same thing (32 Ohm though) with a microphone and cost twice as much. If you really need the microphone to be attached to the headphone itself then by all means check out some headsets. But if not, then buy a separate microphone (most cheap ones for 10-20 bucks are okay for just voice-chatting) and be happy with that.

But Beyerdynamic is a premium brand, in line with AKG, B&W, Harmon Kardan, Technics...and so you're paying minimum 5 to 600 dollars for those (at least here in Canada)....I mean the MMX 300 here in Canada retails for 449.00 (before tax) and that's from Amazon. It's more expensive at actual Video/stereo driven stores like 2001 AudioVideo. At this point I think, if I am going to do anything, it will be to buy a modmic 5 and attach it to a set that I already have. Or maybe buy a 3rd set that is less expensive from bestbuy (because I don't necessarily want to modify my BOSE or Sennheisers) and modify that with a mod mic.

Well, you don't need a Beyerdynamic, there are other good headphones as well. It's just the model I'm using for years now. The DT-770 Pro is around 150€ while the MMX with pretty much the same parts is around 280€ which is totally insane when the biggest difference is basically that one has a microphone and the other doesn't and one is marketed towards studio professionals while the other caters to the gaming audience. Bu you mentioned that you have a headphone and are pretty happy with it. So basically what I wanted to say with my post: keep it, use it, buy a standalone microphone on top if you need one for gaming

Morning, All. After careful consideration and lots of online research and reading of reviews, both about the ModMic system and various Gaming Headsets....I've decided to go the route of the Gaming headset mainly because I don't want to modify my existing sets, and therefore I would have to buy a third set just to modify those...so factoring the cost of the modmic (at 165.00 from Amazon.ca) + the cost of a third headset (one that I wouldn't really care about)...that total cost is more than buying a good gaming set. Plus the cost of the modmic (considering what it is) is on the expensive side, and for what it is, in my opinion, the cost is better spent for the complexity of a gaming headset.
And after researching numerous brands including STEELSERIES, Sennheiser, Razer, Logitech, Kingston, Corsair, Plantronics and even Beyerdynamics....I have decided to go with the G933 Artemis Spectrum Wireless 7.1 Dolby set from Logitech. It's the same price anywhere I have looked, including Amazon.ca and Bestbuy...sitting at 179.99
and considering this is a pay week for me, I am going to pick them up from bestbuy this week

I've decided to go the route of the Gaming headset mainly because I don't want to modify my existing sets, and therefore I would have to buy a third set just to modify those the mod isn't permanent...at worse, all you would have had has the stick-on magnet the mic attaches to, stuck to one of your earcups. And the stick-on itself can be removed as well. The modmic doesn't change the sound or performance or anything permanent like that. It just adds a mic and adds a cosmetic attachment. It's a high quality, omni-directional mic with a mute function, and also allows for (optional) XLR support, enabling super-high clarity for applications such streaming or casting. Couple that with the fact that its modularity allows you to use it with virtually any pair of headphones you want, I'd say justifies the price. Not really sure what you mean about the "complexity" of gaming headsets, other than EAX effects, which are gimmicky at worst and comparable by high end headphones (which also allow for a more diverse, natural soundscape) at best. Your choice is your choice, but I see your reasoning for making your choice as...misinformed or simply being un-knowledgeable on the topic.

I thank you for your feedback and appreciate your input on the topic. Perhaps I am ignorant of this particular topic (which is why I had done research online), and perhaps from your point of view my reasoning is flawed...At the end of the day, the choice is still mine to make whether it is one made of ignorance and flawed reasoning, or sound and educated judgement. Though, honestly I do appreciate you taking the time to better inform me as to what the product is. However, given all that I have learned about the modmic up to this point in time and also because I have not had the opportunity to see and to try one for myself, I still believe that a better investment is in a good quality headset.
Thank you for your post. Your advice is appreciated.

I agree with most of the recommendations - the antlion is a great addition and can easily be added and removed to all your existing high quality headsets, turning any set you want into a gaming set. This allows you upgrade versatility.
I'd also say, if you do go for a new entire headset do not judge by brand, only individual product.
For me, the important things are: comfort, positional soundstage, separate chat/game audio controls, and then audio quality.
I ended up with a turtle beach elite 800 for the ps4 - it's surround sound let's you know exactly where everything is, is comfortable for a long time, and is good quality. Also it has a dock where it lives for charging and loads of options for adjusting the soundmix. I don't like very many turtle beach headsets, but I reviewed a lot of different makes and models and found the elite 800 the best at the time. (compared to the contemporary astros, SteelSeries, Sennheiser, Razer, etc.) I've had them for quite a few years now and they still feel like new and are a joy to play in every time. (only negative is the ears get a bit hot if it's a really intense sweaty session - but that happens with any headset to me!)
Again, how well a headset processes the surround sound mix makes a huge difference to me - picking up instinctively where something is because you can hear it is worth more than a slight difference in audio fidelity.

Went to my local Bestbuy with the intent on picking up the 933s....Then a rep came up to me and said he wasn't sure they had any in stock (though online it said they did) but he strongly suggested at this point in time that I should just wait another week and get the newer 935s when they are released on the 25th. He told me I could put in a pre-order and get 50 dollars off in the form of a gift card if I ordered online, so that's what I did.

I went to Best Buy after work and picked up the Plantronics RIG 800HD. They were on sale and hard to pass up at the price. Currently messing around with EQ setting while listening to Anthem sound track(which is awesome). They are light weight and feel comfortable. Ear muffs are all cloth vs the cloth/vinyl of my RIG500. I am liking not having a cord that gets caught on things. I do also have the wireless transmitter/receiver hooked via USB and optical cable(which does not come with headset)

That RIG 800HD was the other set I was considering next to the G933 from Logitech, but three different reps (two from the TV/Audio dept, one from the PC dept) highly recommended the soon-coming G935s from logitech, "of all the brands we carry....STEELSeries, Logitech, Razer, Plantronics, ASUS, Kingston HyperX and Corsair and a few smaller brands....Logitech and Plantronics are the two best, and with the G 935s having received an overhaul, they are set to outperform the previous 933 and (insert opinion) they may even edge out the top tier Pantronics, the 800 series in some areas. But the Plantronics does have Dolby ATMOS. Logitech uses DTS X v 2.0 (for headphones) and Plantronics uses DOLBY ATMOS...though that comes down to sound preference. Either way, whatever you choose you you make a solid choice. Logitech is slightly more expensive being that they're newer."
I have always used Logitech stuff (ie Mice....Currently still using the original G5 Laser mouse circa 2007....Great mouse. Will hate to see it go. Not sure what to get as a replacement....maybe the G502Hero or the G900 series)...so that is why I went with Logitech over Plantronics in the end. But I am sure we are both going to have amazing sounding gaming experiences!

I wish I could try the Dolby Atmos but my gaming PC is still on Win7 and it requires Win10. I've been happy with them so far. Just playing MEA I was hearing things I just never noticed before. Still need to play around with my sound card settings.

Still need to play around with my sound card settings. Do you find a difference between a dedicated sound card vs the onboard audio from your motherboard? I haven't used a dedicated soundcard since the mid-to-late 1990s as I have found the onboard audio on the Boards I have purchased to be equally as good. For example in my current system with the X99-based Phoenix SLI motherboard it has a REALTek 7.1 Surround sound Audio Codec and physical chip on the board, and I have found that to be as good or better than some of the soundcards I have owned.
But, the NuAudio dedicated sound card from EVGA looks amazing....Though here in Canada it's 400.00....That's insane.

I haven't used a dedicated sound card in a few years. So bad choice of words when I should have said tweaking the audio software settings. My board uses Realtek 7.1 with Audio Boost chip and Creative Sound Blaster Cinema software.
I do have an older Creative X-Fi card. Just haven't used it since my current build and MB has good sound. Last system had crap for onboard sound.
That Nu card is on Newegg for $250us. Even then that is pricey for a sound card. Course I'm not an audiophile so doubt I would notice what high quality audio is like

I am excited to receive my order from Best Buy for the Logitech G935s...I've read and watched several reviews and every one of them says not only are they all around better than the previous 933s, but they're just one of the best sets to be coming out there on the market. And for any Bioware game a good sound set-up (including a good sound card or onboard CODEC/Chip and good quality desktop speakers or headsets) is essential. And with a good set of anything, you really can hear a difference not only in the spatial acoustics but in the range and quality of the sound being produced.

Just got my G935s delievered last night and have tried that out today......Wow, what an amazing pair of cans! (ew! Not those kind. Git yer minds out the gutter y'all! haha). They sound incredible and are very comfortable. I've worn them for about 4 hours with no discomfort and the sound is amazing. It sounds really interesting how they simulate the 7.1 channel sound by having it come from different places on/within the speaker....And admittedly, that is taking some time getting used to- coming from years of 2.0 stereo headphones....But the directionality is incredible and the sound both in volume, pitch, tone, range and quality/clarity is unreal. I am very impressed with this set and thus far I am happy with my purchase.
I think the more I play with them, I'll get used to everything and begin to like them even more.
But so far, nothing bad to report.

In using my G935s for the weekend....One thing I have noticed is that I cannot seem to get the microphone to function in-game when playing ANTHEM. By all reports and indications it is and should be functioning properly (VOIP Settings are set to "voice activated", there is no LED lit up to say the mic is muted...it is lowered into the correct position.....And there have been 3x times when Ihave heard players over my headset, but I have been unsure if they have heard me....I'm growing concerned that something is broken, yet this was a brand new set and it as only just released not even a week ago.....

I haven't tried voice chat on my Xbox but I always assumed I could just talk via Kinnect if I enabled the chat. It has a built in mic after all and the sound would just go to my normal speakers. Or doesn't it work that way?

I'm a big fan of Turtle Beach headphones. I owned one pair for my Xbox 360, which completely improved my CoD and Left 4 Dead sessions. I have another pair for my Xbox One, which I was gifted, but ideally I would have upgraded to a bit pricier one (but free is free!). Thinking about getting one for my PS4, but I don't really do multiplayer on there, so it's a bit of a "someday" purchase. Anyway, I've always had great luck with Turtle Beach. Quality is good, they have different sets at different price points, and the features included in even the less expensive ones are very useful. Same here, however I've discovered that depending on the actual set, your comfort experience may vary. For example, my husband, son and myself all have Turtle Beaches. My husband has the 700 Stealth Wireless that he loves, and the sound quality is amazing, but I find them heavy and too clunky. My son uses the Stealth 200, which were mine to start.. they have amazing sound quality as well, but they are pretty tight on my head and as someone who wears glasses, they got to be pretty uncomfortable after an hour or so. I went back to the Recon 60 which I find very comfortable, even wearing glasses, but unfortunately sound quality is nowhere near as great as the stealths 600 or 700. Now if I could find a combination of those.. that would be fantastic.

I solved my mic issue yesterday after some trial-and-error, got it set-up properly and they work perfectly. The G935s from Logitech sound absolutely amazing and they're very comfortable even for extended hours. They are heavy, heavier than my BOSE AE2s, but no heavier than my Sennheiser HDR 165s. I am very pleased with my purchase and I'm sure they'll last a long time.

Nice to see my recommendation (though the wireless version of it) worked out for you. And yes, now you see they really sound amazing with the Logitech Gaming Software drivers/app and it's ability to turn on 7.1. PS - if you're getting white noise feedback while mic is flipped on, turn down the sidetone in the levels menu to fix.

The wired headsets should be lighter then the wireless ones since they don't have to pack the extra weight of the battery/batteries. Recall having a previous Turtle beach that required 2 AA's on one side.
