Well the dick is still a deal-breaker. Whether it's still* or was there Ok, the “was” has always been a bit confusing to me. I can understand when people aren’t into dicks. Some people just aren’t, and that’s totally fine. But not being into the metaphysical idea of a dick that’s not physically present seems wild. Are people with androgen insensitivity syndrome (XY chromosomes, but no/lowered response to androgens so they develop female anatomy and may not even realize they’re XY) tricking people if they present as women? At what point does the idea of the dick become so strong that it’s equivalent to having an actual dick? To be clear, I’m positive DA wouldn’t have Mae not mention that she’s trans, nor am I saying she should hide it. I just find the obsession with ghost dicks a bit weird.

arvaarad I don't think some people will be satisfied with a person's transition, even if they somehow managed to change their chromosomes.

arvaarad I don't think some people will be satisfied with a person's transition, even if they somehow managed to change their chromosomes. The ghost dicks are far too powerful. They make people think bi women are straight, bi men are gay, and any trans woman will just, idk, vomit dildoes onto them during sex. It’s like people think dicks are curséd artifacts that will inevitably make anyone who gets near them hunger for dick for the rest of their natural lives. But they’re just a slightly floppier version of the little fellow in the canoe. They ain’t that special. Although on the subject of ghost dicks, Tevinter seems like the perfect place for more demons to show up. How would people feel about spirit/demon romances? Not an abomination like Anders, but someone more like Imshael or Command?

Irrational indeed. This discussion has me thinking about what my physical preferences are, and I’m not finding a discernible pattern. There are people that I think are my (physical) type, but personality plays such a gigantic role that I’m not even sure I have any physical preferences at all. In the sense that, I might intellectually think “that person looks/sounds/smells hot”, but I’m not sure if that actually translates to any boost in my overall attraction to them. I’m pretty sure the DA4 LIs could all be glowing, intangible energy spheres, and I wouldn’t even notice after the first couple minutes. My particular quirk is that lust is easy, attraction is hard. The latter implies the former but not the other way around. It is so rare for me to be into someone that for a while there I thought I was aromantic. I am less picky when it comes to video game romances, because as Melbella has pointed out there's no need to take them so seriously. Still picky, though! There's a spirit called Command? Kinky.

Let's keep it simple, no unique biologies, rare mutations and whatnots. Mae is (/the comics) physically still male so not a straight option. Well, for women, but Mae had a dwarf husband. (Hmm, maybe a race gated romance with a moving on plot? Shut up brain )

Imshael was just taking the form of a man, right? As was Cole. I think those cases are fine. Even though this wasn't an issue in Anders's romance, I wouldn't want a possessed person because that raises ethical issues with consent and so forth. Aside from that, I generally just prefer normal people.

Theoretically a spirit would be the ideal romance, shaped and affected by the person, but according to the Solas-Bull banter it wouldn't work. Stupid demons have to ruin everything.

I don't know about a spirit romance. Can they love? Can they feel a passionate, romantic attachment to another soul? I don't think we know enough about them yet.

Spirit of love that can transform into a spirit of obsession halfway through the romance. I can almost taste the angst.

Loving someone is so much more, though, than a simple emotion, however pure. I just don't think spirits are complex enough to love as people do.

Delicious crepés, people on these forums are extremely vindictive towards straight men, holy crap. I mean, seriously, do some people in this thread really hate on straight people because some of them do not want to date trans people? I wonder what ideology you all subscribe to, perhaps bioware should stop creating LGTB romances because it is clearly fostering a very toxic community. Anywho, Mae as a love interest? Nah. Introducing a trans character as a love interest should probably remain a no-go overall, to be honest. Could do well a companion though, or perhaps a type of advisor. At some point in the future Bioware is probably going to announce that Morrigan was a trans character all along! -insert mild shock-

Loving someone is so much more, though, than a simple emotion, however pure. I just don't think spirits are complex enough to love as people do. True, there’s definitely a mismatch in their fundamental instincts. Spirits survive by completely different means than mortals do; not with food and shelter but by promoting specific concepts. So some of their complexity is on a dimension that isn’t relevant to mortals, just as some of mortals’ complexity is on an axis that isn’t relevant to spirits. One way that’s likely to manifest is that spirits are probably way more invested in the mortal’s emotional state than another mortal would be. And not necessarily in a “I care about this person” way, but in a “if you’re happy I literally grow stronger” way. On the other hand, I think there’s some space there to explore feelings of social anxiety, just like Cole is in some ways an exploration of the limits of charity (i.e. the kind of help that makes someone feel helpful is not necessarily the same as what’s most helpful). I can definitely resonate with that feeling of being overly entangled with someone else’s emotional state — it’s not necessarily healthy, and a spirit with similar feelings would have room for growth, but it’s real.

Nobody at any point said that straight people are obligated to date trans people. Well, not exactly what I was saying. But as far as I have noted, and sure I assume, but it seems straight people are being called bigoted for not wanting to romance trans people You, on the other hand, are saying there should never be a trans love interest. Very true. Trans people are in a very special position in regards to the dating world. Lesbians usually don't want to date a trans woman. Gays usually don't want to date a trans man. Straight men usually don't want to date a trans woman. Straight women usually don't want to date a trans man. Of course, I suppose it also depends entirely on how many romances bioware decide on. In Inquisiton, lesbians had two options, Sera and Josephine, gays had two, Dorian and Iron Bull, straight men had two, Cassandra and Josephine, straight women had four, Cullen, Iron Bull, Blackwall, Solas (If playing elf). Maevaris could potentially be a t hird romance option for straight men, giving straight men a total of three options, perhaps she is even only into humans So perhaps I should retract my statement and put forth a new one. Adding a trans love interest should not take away a option, it should be an added option. People are still going to complain about 'wokeness' But that is more fair than: "Alright, a trans woman for straight male romance, and then they have a bisexual woman too"

So perhaps I should retract my statement and put forth a new one. Adding a trans love interest should not take away a option, it should be an added option. This bit I agree with. Would theoretically total 5 characters interested in men. Two straight women, two gay men, and Mae(possibly race-restricted, though probably not, given the trans aspect is already unique enough).

WTF did I read.
The crazy bigoted authoritharian leftists have striked again.
After " toxic masculinity " several pages ago, now you are a bigot if you don't date trans people. There is nothing more " toxic " than a crazy bigoted leftist who so love dictating what other folks should be, should do, should like.
Could you just stop your " toxic talk ? " and go back to your " safe space " so that " straight people with their tastes " won't offend your fragile mind and ego again ? Bleh.
Why are you trying to force Mae as a romance for straight men anyway, while it isn't something they even asked.

Just found this poll and put my answers in. I'm female myself and I tend to play female characters. That being said I have a world-state for every Origin in DAO and two from those Wardens are male. As there are two male Inquisitors. No male Hawkes though. I tried to do Hawke as a male but it just wouldn't work out for me. However my main, canon world state always has a human female character and it will be in DA4 too. Basically I'd go for any male romance option that isn't a Dwarf. I find Dwarfs quite unappealing in their body proportions. That being said, its probably inevitable I would create a Dwarf character eventually on one of my final word states and its then I regret the lack of a Dwarven romance option. But no overall I'll always want a healthy, fertile, romancable straight human male. Preferably with nothing against mages or elves. (The Warden has an interesting one. Knowing she was infertile due to the taint on one of my later playthroughs I had her romance Leliana just because Leliana was a pleasant person in DAO.) If not a nice human male, then an elf male. Qunari are... a little oddly proportioned for a romance with a human female player so mostly I'd want just a human or elf male for my canon world state.

I mean, if anything, she would be restricted to dwarven men. Do you even know anything about the character beyond her being trans? Nope. Haven't read the books (or comics). I just hear a lot about her. now you are a bigot if you don't date trans people. This is actually not that new. But at the very least, being scorned for not wanting to date trans people is not something reserved for "heteronormative cis men" gay people are equally scorned by it. This bit I agree with. Would theoretically total 5 characters interested in men. Two straight women, two gay men, and Mae(possibly race-restricted, though probably not, given the trans aspect is already unique enough). I think it is better to follow an initial formula of 1 straight male, 1 straight female, 1 bi male, 1 bi female, 1 gay male, 1 gay female. And then Bioware can add perhaps two more romance options, one of those two could be Maevaris.

Good question arvaarad, I've not actually considered that before. Well, operating under the assumption that DA4 will be mostly set in Tevinter...
I'd like to see a Tevinter LI that's from either one of the middle classes. An 'ordinary' Tevinter who could give us an interesting perspective into what things are like for a middle of the road Tevinter citizen.
Though technically its been done with Fenris, he was a special case with his lyrium tattoos and I'd still like to see a LI who is an elf slave of Tevinter.
I'd also like to see a romancable female Qunari. Maybe a trader from Par Vollen, or a Tallis or possibly a rogue Tal Vashoth ex Tamrassan. That would be very interesting-to get a look at Qunari life from an ex-Tamrassan or at least a female perspective of the Qun.
It would also be cool to see a LI from somewhere we haven't been or really encountered major npcs from. Maybe Rivain or something like that.
Finally, I'd like to see a Fereldan or Orlesian show up. Assuming the game is in Tevinter it'd be interesting to see how someone from one of our familiar 'southern' countries would react to Tevinter culture. Especially if s/he is an ex-Templar.
