arstechnica.com/gaming/2023/01/rpg-fans-irate-as-dd-tries-to-shut-its-open-game-license/WOTC (Hasbro) has decided to revoke its original 20 years old Open Gaming License (OGL), which it promised it won't, with a newer more strict license which would allow it to take money from any creation that uses the D&D ruleset and also to use it for its own purposes without paying the creators. Aside from the fact that game rules cannot be copyrighted, Hasbro can't even claim to be its original creators, since Chainmail's (1971) ruleset is based on Len Patt's rules that were created for an unlicensed Middle-Earth game in 1970 as well as Siege of Bodenburg by Henry Bodenstedt which was released in 1967. So unless Hasbro wants to enter into a lawsuit with the Tolkien Estate they better reconsider the wording in the OGL. www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1439-ogl-1-0a-creative-commonsHasbro will no longer revoke the OGL and have published all of D&D's rules (SRD 5.1) under the Creative Commons license (CC BY 4.0), so you don't even need the OGL anymore and it's more open than the OGL.

My thoughts on Dead Space Remake when compared to the original and other Dead Space games. Story spoilers will be from the 2008 version but I'll still add spoiler tags. Positive: -Isaac has much more agency and his VA work is good. -Ishimura feels like an actual starship with compartmentalized, connecting corridors to major sections rather than only being accessible by the tram -Love the switch boxes where you can divert power to either air, lights, doors, etc. -The Security Clearance levels mean you have a reason to backtrack and open up the lockers/rooms that you previously did not have access for instead of being closed forever. -Zero G is so much more improved that I don't think they will ever go back to using the original Zero G Jumps -Weapon upgrades components being required to further upgrade weapons are a nice touch and give you another reason to backtrack. -Since Issac is faster, so are the Necromorphs and they are terrifying. -The peeling mechanic is brilliant, especially when using the flamethrower and turning necromorphs into skeletons. -The ADS sections have been reworked and vastly improved. -Lots of other Dead Space media references that I liked from the comics to the movies to other games. -There are side missions akin to Dead Space 3 that further add more lore, backstory to named characters or upgrades for Isaac. -Map design is about 90% 1-1, with the other times being slightly rather inverted or side paths lengthened, which is not a bad thing since the map design is still pretty tight. -Respawning necromorphs when you backtrack but the AI director puts them in different locations which keeps the tension.
Mixed: -The Valor section is hit or miss for me, from the communications officer transmission to the impact to fighting through it and the escape. The tension is not there compared to Dead Space. The Twitchers are fine and scary but it doesn't feel nearly as tense. -Survivor encounters that help push the plot along but also minimizes the tension and immersion. -Mercer started off as a strong antagonist but his end was really terrible compared to the original. -The audio mixing for tools and weapons feels different, don't know if I like or dislike it. -Art design is fine but there's too much darkness and visual candy to the point that it detracts from the atmosphere. -The twist to the big twist, while it making sense lore-wise, made some characters into idiots rather than being victims of manipulation.
Negatives: -Voice acting for everyone except Isaac took a major step down from the named characters to the audio logs to the holograms. It feels like the characters are less 'professional' and more quip happy emotional. -Characterizations have been butchered. -The Suits look too shiny compared to the original, especially the military suit which was ruined by making it so edgy. -Environmental hazards like the grav plates have been removed. -Most character deaths and even half of Isaac's deaths are so lame. -Woke nonsense here and there. -The writers don't understand the concept of subtlety. -Audio bugs, rag-doll bugs, and even mission bugs.
Overall, if Dead Space (2008) is an 88/100, then Dead Space (2023) is a 83/100. A good game and a decent remake but it confirms my idea of where the remakes (not just Dead Space) will be heading to.

IGN @ignEXCLUSIVE: IGN has learned from multiple sources that PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo won't be part of E3 2023. bit.ly/3HnsLkQ- Ofc, we can add EA to that list as well. We'll see if they wind up canceling again this year (for good?).

PlayStation hasn't had a proper showcase since the Microsoft/Blizzard circus.

Yeah, though I'm guessing it won't be too long before they start announcing their summer events. We know they'll land June/July for the most part. The ones not landing in the summer can happen... whenever they feel they have enough to show. The Starfield showcase should be within another month or two.

Discover brand new gameplay footage in a new, in-depth trailer for Atomic Heart, the action-RPG set in the mad utopia of an alternate post-WWII world.
Unforgiving combat and explosive encounters have you blast rogue robots, giant machines and even mutants. Make sure to adapt your fighting style to each opponent, stay wary of your environment and upgrade your equipment to make your way through artificial madness.

Overall, if Dead Space (2008) is an 88/100, then Dead Space (2023) is a 83/100. A good game and a decent remake but it confirms my idea of where the remakes (not just Dead Space) will be heading to. For further confirmation of this trend, see Witcher 3 Patch 4.01 - a whopping two bugs fixed on PC, and ray tracing still broken for most people. Apparently CDPR used a Microsoft testing tool to convert the game from DX11>12. Microsoft did not intend the tool to be used this way, for probably very good reasons. The .dll that corresponds to that tool was found in the game files. I have typed ten different lines after writing that paragraph, and they were all so vitriolic I had to just delete them and shake my head. The people that make decisions at the high level in these corporations, really do not care about their customers, and don't think highly of our intelligence. Best I can do without going apeshit. At least that update is a toggle, you can still play "classic" which is really the least they could do, but they did it so thanks for that. Still a shame that I have a nice PC with a pretty good and still fairly recent GPU, and cannot play the game with RTX on and expect a good experience. Your Dead Space review was interesting to read. I own the old game, have started it but never got far. Might be time to give it another shot, it is well-regarded in most circles.

Yeah I got Cyberpunk vibes from this as well so not sure it's for me really. I could see myself maybe picking it up in a sale if I'm bored and looking for something new to play. But at launch unlikely especially wit hthe other games comin gout atm. Given I haven't yet got round t oplaying Forspoken, Hogwarts coming ou tnext week and a golf game coming out in March I have my eye on as well.

I own the old game, have started it but never got far. Might be time to give it another shot, it is well-regarded in most circles. Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. More and more glitches and bugs will keep popping up with these remakes and remasters because the developer mindset is "We could just patch these problems away later....." compared to the old "FIX IT NOW!" mentality that gave us better quality games in the days of old.
But besides the bugs, I see future remakes suffer in quality of writing and "soul" in exchange for pretty graphics and gameplay improvements. This is not universal and there are exceptions but in general, it seems to be heading in that direction.
Dead Space (2008) still holds up very well; however, the PC port was less than stellar with issues like input lag and V-Sync problems. But, thankfully, there are unofficial patches.

People shit talking on the internet? Let's enact a police state! UbiSoft being the one to push this orwellian nightmare is the cherry on top. People reporting crimes to police? That's a police state! Don’t be dense. This mechanism and others like it will be combined with the ever-widening and ever-ambiguous obscenity laws to criminalize more and more people. Active death and bomb threats on real people and places, fine those are crimes warranting police attention which a reasonable person would find appropriate; however, insults and general toxic behavior does not warrant police attention.
