I know that the others, especially Amell, Tabris, Cousland and Mahariel have had their lore expanded through the WoT books, comics, other games, novels, etc... except for Surana?! Really? I don't want to be a boring human! I want to be a pointy-eared twink! D:

I'm not aware of any Surana lore. Which means we are all free to make stuff up.

I see you're a glass-half-full kind of person. I like that.
Fine.
Any good headcanons/fics that expand on the Surana family? It doesn't matter if it's Dalish, Denerim Alienage or whatever.
I do admit that I do like to ship M!Tabris and M!Surana as awkward friends who had a secret crushes on each-other and could never admit to it, neither of them. Especially M!Tabris, hiding from Cyrion. Poor father would never understand. Soris would laugh at their cousin, while Shianni would be perplexed. Dread-wolf take Valendrian and his matchmaking. I have experience in that domain.
M!Surana was an orphan boy in the Denerim Alienage, sometimes sleeping in the market or beneath the branches of the Vhenadahl during summer and inside the orphanage during the cold winter months. He was a thief and a pickpocket... a very untalented one, but some marks were easy enough. An apple here, a copper there, anything to survive. But as Tabris used to tell him when he was a kid, "In for a copper, in for a crown." He would always get into trouble. Atleast Tabris understood him, especially after his mother got killed by the shems. And then the wisp incident happened.
Surana, Tabris, Soris and Shianni were childhood friends and play-mates, but one day, tragedy happened. Surana summoned a wisp. While some of the kids were awestruck and loved playing with the strange orb of light, the others were scared of the "maleficar", and tattled to their parents. Before they knew it, some templar wearing a bucket came and took Surana by his collar to the Chantry for processing. Tabris tried to fight off the metal-clad brute, only to be slapped with a metal gauntlet, losing a tooth.*
Later the young boy named Surana was taken to the Cathedral inside a dark room filled with ominous looking vials and jars that glowed crimson in the candlelight.
He was scared to death, but the templar removed the helmet to reveal a middle-aged shem with kind eyes and a soft voice. "This will only sting for a minute", she said, trying to distract him from frantic crying and screaming. Cold, uncaring eyes lingered in the room, of men and women clad in robes and armour stamped with the Flaming-Sun, all hateful, except for the templar that captured him. And even she hurt him. "I only need a few droops. Then we can feed, wash and clothe you. Shh. It's alright." A faint smile from her, and the boy stopped mewling. He was still scarred, still hurting from the knife-wound, his heart still ached for his friends. Seeing that the boy was whimpering, she stopped.
-I think that's enough. You, mage! Close the wound and then leave us.
A young woman bid as she commanded, summoning a soothing and warm light that filled him with life and calmed him. The templar then took the boy to the kitchens. The next day brought even more heartache.
-What do you mean I have to leave the Alienage?! It's my home! -You are a mage. -I'm not a demon!-protested the boy, making faces and obscene gestures. -Andraste preserve us! That's not how you comport yourself in front of the Revered Mother!
...
Three days later, the Bannorn, en-route to Kinloch Hold. Surana and the same templar, riding a horse.
Surana: -Mrs. Buckethead? What's a book? Templar: -I told you already, my name is... Surana: -Look, a horse, can I ride it? Templar: -You're already on a horse. Surana: -My ass hurts riding with you! And you smell funny! Templar: -... Surana: -I smell funny! Ugh! I smell like flowers! Yuck! Templar: -The bath suited you. Surana: -You bathe with cold water in the summer and don't bathe at all during winter! Because of you and her ladyship I'll catch a cold in the head! Templar: -Her worship. Surana: -What? Templar: -You address a Revered Mother as... Surana: -Don't care. Ponced-up Whorelesian skirt-wearing, boot-licking fools the lot of you... *Argh* Ouch! Why did you do that?! Templar: -Shut up, ass. Surana: -At least as a mage I won't have to starve. Kinda like the orphanage. Templar: -About that... Last night I saw you. Surana: -What? Templar: -Tonight you're paying for the food. Three silvers should cover the food and board at the inn. Isn't that right little Surana. Surana: -Am I in trouble? *visibly scared, ears turning red* Templar: -Remember to order pea stew. Surana: -At least as a mage no one will tell me what to do. And I can eat what I want. And I'll get the finest velvet pants I can stea... erh... buy. Templar: -About that...
*As for why no one recognizes my Surana when going to the Alienage? Well, it's been decade, give or take a few years. There's been enough tragedy and death, including a purge, that over-shadowed this little incident that is all too common.
There, headcanon.
Any other examples?

well...I personally have a tiny head canon regarding Surana
if you've played Inquisition, remember Lysas? I head canon he's one of Surana's siblings or at least a family member that they're unaware of
I personally think it's sad that Surana seems to have been forgotten by the developers over the years out of all the Wardens, Surana is a true blank slate, you get to decide where you're from, whether or not you remember your family I love that about them...

On the one hand the Surana Wardens have the bonus of being nameless heroes, ala Gothic series, most likely orphans. Which helps with role-playing. My favorite Surana playstyle is the zevranmance DR-doing thieves. One point in Stealing in the CC, and I can pickpocket anyone in the tower. I figured that my Surana's plan was to start her own private business, being his own thief and fence, and start his own small thieves guild in the circle. He passed his Harrowing with flying colors (barely*), and decided to help Jowan in the last minute because he figured that Jowan is his friend, the Circle is just a gilded cage, and there are better pickings outside the tower.
*I decided to start out the game by investing all my points into magic, one skill into stealing, and all my available talent points into the spell-might/mana-clash line. No offensive spells. My Surana was Irving's star pupil, a savant at mana-manipulation, but had no combat training and knew no offensive spells, not even the bolt spell (hello Awakening in the OC talent and merchant supplement, hello console, let my type runscript additemwmat gxa_im_tome_unlearning.uti 1, because I like respecing everyone at least once).
I decided to play on nightmare... You can imagine how well that went. The heal spell saved me, but until I managed to get to that Valor guy and get the staff, and level up enough to get winter's grasp, my Surana was pathetic. My warden has the 'violent' voice. "You're pathetic! It's a slaughter! More blood!", yelled the hero of our story, while running benny-hill style away from the wisp, and then coming back after healing himself, to lightly slap the annoying ball of light. My strategy in dealing with wisps: punch, punch, mana-leech, heal, punch, heal, punch, punch, mana-leech, punch. '
At least Jowan was more powerful this time, even without me respec-ing him. His usefulness and my love of screw-balls allowed me to actually not feel sorry or care about Irving and Gregoir's b^@!lsh*t this time. So far things are going great, but I am not as powerful as I could be. At least until mana-clash and storm of the century somewhere around level 8.

I head canon my own mage Warden as being someone who pretends to be weak so as not to draw attention to herself so I too started out with some not so smart skills and talents, but as I head canon her as 'weak' the actual leveling was what made her stronger and be the person she always was
I'll have to replay her at some point...once I...you know, finish my current run that I can't seem to get of the ground I have a Dalish elf rogue who romances Morrigan but eh...Morrigan and he aren't exactly...compatible in terms of personality (I played him once in the past where I attempted to romance her, but got ninja-ed by Leliana and had to choose in the end (I did get three achievements in that playthrough though )
also, if you're playing on pc, I may know a few mods that make respec-ing a lot easier mod 1 it adds an interact-able raven to every location in the game (also in the Origin stories I believe, since I encountered one in the Dalish Origin) mod 2 removes the initial starting talents and skills during character creation, giving you more freedom with making new characters (example being if you want to play a human noble warrior with two-handed skills but are forced to spec as a sword+shield character due to the starting talents )

Once a year I get the DA itch. I need to play the game. But I know the ins and outs of the combat and leveling system, and I know how easy it is to make an overpowered character that can solo the game even on easy, regardless of class, with the right equipment, attributes and talents, specialization combinations, regardless of class. This time I want to try to limit myself and have some fun. No potions higher than lesser tier, no number greater then ten, only one specialization at a time per character (Alistair will hate to give up lyrium at some point, lovable fool). As for my lates Harrowing experience, I'll let the screenshots speak for themselves: also, if you're playing on pc, I may know a few mods that make respec-ing a lot easier mod 1 it adds an interact-able raven to every location in the game (also in the Origin stories I believe, since I encountered one in the Dalish Origin) mod 2 removes the initial starting talents and skills during character creation, giving you more freedom with making new characters (example being if you want to play a human noble warrior with two-handed skills but are forced to spec as a sword+shield character due to the starting talents ) I know about those mods, but I was trying to reduce my ammount of mods, since I've decided to keep a back-up if my Bioware folder (all of my DAO and DA2 mods and saves) for future use, but the size was a bit much. So redundant mods had to go. I asked myself what to keep and what to uninstall. Having both Awakening in the OC and the Raven Respec mod seemed redundant to me. I just open the console, give myself one tome, then later give myself another 10 to put in the storage chest post-Lothering.

ah I see, I don't use the Awakening in OC mod myself
I also have way to many mods installed, I reduced them today as well, mostly removed the ones I wouldn't need for my current run
also I just put my character creation mods (hairstyles and such) just inside my override folder, since I've gotten the hang of making face morphs with the toolset I no longer bother with the actual character creator the ones I do have installed are just a few aesthetic mods (such as Grey Warden armor from DA2), and a few that add a few more scenes to the story, also a few that address certain glitches or bugs

My Surana Warden was my "good, but hopelessly in over their head" character. Having lived all his life in the Tower, Nelren only picked Lawful Good actions and sent away Companions that didn't live up to his ideal, which was pretty much everyone. Since Dragon Age is a different kind of fantasy , he was spectacularly unprepared for the final battle. It was a disaster. I loved it
