And why she would stop using blood magic? Magic is magic. A tool. Plus as we learned in the Descent DLC, all modern magic is blood magic. Most people just use Titan blood aka Lyrium. You're putting too much weight into an metaphor, Hanako. Lyrium is not actually the "blood" of the Titans; that's just the closest comparison to our own circulatory system, since it runs in "veins." I'm not even clear what function lyrium serves, or if it actually hurts a Titan to lose its "blood." Blood magic, on the other hand, is definitely fueled by pain and sacrifice. Anyways, in my own headcanon (which I think is supported by actual canon), Hawke has encouraged Merrill to tone down on the blood magic a bit.

"Blood magic comes from demons. They could counter every bit of lore I know." Avernus, a blood mage. And when Merrill dispelled a barrier by doing something as basic as cutting her wrist to boost spell power, Bethany felt a demon's presence. Even if it can be done safely, as a general principle I wouldn't want to touch anything related to beings whose existence revolves around misery and deception. Likewise, I wouldn't accept a gift from a drug dealer. You don't need accept. Anders also hates blood magic. Merrill believe, she can handle. As much as I commend Merrill's good sense in bringing Hawke with her as a plan B, it still is reckless to accept the risk. Let's all keep making deals with demons because we can bring a friend to kill us in case something goes wrong. It isn't wise.

Perhaps not wise, if Hawke trust in Merrill's willpower, but anyone always can resist, ofc, if have enough strong. I think it is better to know that how working, than not to know. I always said we should have dialogue options and plus weakness (not only that negligible health loss), if Hawke are blood mage and use blood magic. But I just don't understand what are you want to saying with this? That Merrill is morally questionable? Or that you does not approve of the existence of Merrill? Or the romance with her? Or, that not possible to dissuade her to use of blood magic? Or that she live in Kirkwall? Or why Hawke take her anywhere, because she are dangerous? (Mine is rarely take her, because usually takes Anders, Fenris and Varric, but Anders also dangerous and morally questionable) No, I really dont understand.

Even if it can be done safely, as a general principle I wouldn't want to touch anything related to beings whose existence revolves around misery and deception. No one knows the inception of blood magic in Thedas; there are numerous 'origin stories' for blood magic, with 'demons' being one story among many. Avernus being a blood mage doesn't mean he knows what no one else in modern Thedas does. You also don't need a 'demon' to learn blood magic, as in the story of Awakening you can ask another blood mage to teach you blood magic, and WoT also makes reference to blood mages being taught blood magic by other blood mages. And when Merrill dispelled a barrier by doing something as basic as cutting her wrist to boost spell power, Bethany felt a demon's presence. Bethany felt a shift in the Fade. According to Dragon Age II and their explanation of blood magic: "Nothing inspires as much wild-eyed terror as the Blood Mage. Mages of this type take the raw energy of life and twist it to their own purposes. They can corrupt and control, and sustain their power by consuming the health of others, willing or not. The effects can be vile, but this specialization isn't limited to madmen and monsters. Many see it as the only form of magic that is truly free, because it's tied to the physical, not favors to spirits or demons." Likewise, I wouldn't accept a gift from a drug dealer. I wouldn't consider Merrill learning blood magic from a spirit trapped in a totem and sundered from the Fade to be equivalent to that. Merrill wanted to help her people through revolutionary technology that could have irrevocably changed the lives of the People for the better. I consider Merrill's efforts more admirable than Hawke leading an expedition into the darkspawn infested Deep Roads (where contact with darkspawn blood will contaminate you and turn you into a ghoul) for a rumored treasure so that his family can regain their fortune and status again.

You don't need accept. Anders also hates blood magic. Merrill believe, she can handle. As much as I commend Merrill's good sense in bringing Hawke with her as a plan B, it still is reckless to accept the risk. Merrill brings Hawke because Audacity is supposed to be trapped in a totem, but she suspects that Audacity may have escaped. It's Merrill's Plan A because, if Audacity is free, the spirit is a serious danger to anyone who comes into contact with Audacity. It's the smart move to make under the circumstances because, unlike Marethari, Merrill actually thought things through and didn't act reckless. Throughout the entire story, Merrill is the best example of a blood magic who never abuses their abilities to harm others. Despite Kirkwall being a Tevinter Hellmouth (as we know from the Band of Three codex entries), she also never succumbs like others do. Her status during Inquisition is as a person helping the elves who have no one else to protect them and lead them (although it would have made a lot of sense to include her in Inquisition given her story arc with the Eluvian and her status as an actual elven expert on what lore has been discovered and maintained over the centuries). Let's all keep making deals with demons because we can bring a friend to kill us in case something goes wrong. Merrill made no deal with Audacity; no one claims she did, either. Unlike Connor, Merrill simply spoke to Audacity, and the spirit had no claim on her like the Desire Demon did because of her contract with Connor. Also, Merrill explicitly says to an aggressive Hawke that she had no intention of releasing Audacity, and even Marethari never claims that Merrill would have released Audacity; she instead claims that Audacity would have escaped through the restored Eluvian (which seems like the kind of thing Audacity would tell Marethari in order to manipulate her into freeing the spirit since Marethari's reason for opposing Merrill in Acts I and II was completely different). It isn't wise to speak to a trapped spirit for information, with no intention of releasing said spirit?

She did learn blood magic from Audacity, though. She makes this pretty clear in a dialogue with Anders.
You don't HAVE to learn blood magic from a demon, but it's the quickest route to power as they can impart the knowledge instantly.

You also don't need a 'demon' to learn blood magic, as in the story of Awakening you can ask another blood mage to teach you blood magic, and WoT also makes reference to blood mages being taught blood magic by other blood mages. Many see it as the only form of magic that is truly free, because it's tied to the physical, not favors to spirits or demons." I wouldn't consider Merrill learning blood magic from a spirit trapped in a totem and sundered from the Fade to be equivalent to that. Learning it from another blood mage just means you got it from the middle man. Considering that WoT reads that mages teach other mages blood magic and there's dialogue indicating that you can learn it without a "demon" entirely, I don't see why you're making that claim. A blood mage who learned from another blood mage, who learned from another blood mage who learned it from a demon. Except that the origins of blood magic are disputed and both WoT and the narrative address you can learn it from another mages or from sensing the power of your own blood, so that's clearly not the case. [ Yes, and right after that Bethany says "You called something in. Are you insane?" (5:00) And it was ths most basic form of blood magic. Inferring that she needed to summon a spirit to use blood magic would be in contradiction to how blood magic is explained by the same game (which I already cited), and the specific spirit she learned blood magic from is trapped inside an ancient totem and sundered from the Fade completely (and has been ever since the war between Tevinter and Arlathan over a millennia ago). Merrill also tells Hawke that he (or she) can gather intel from spirits without making any bargains with them, which is exactly what you can do with both the Profane Abomination and Torpor. Merrill isn't making any deals with spirits; while she's criticized for speaking to Audacity to learn blood magic, absolutely no one ever claims that she made any bargain with Audacity. Even when Merrill opposes the Champion when she defends the Circle of Kirkwall against a pro-Meredith Hawke, she never summons any spirits to aid her (nor does she abuse her blood magic abilities even in these dire circumstances). It is a good comparison, actually. The value of the gift doesn't change whom you're it receiving it from. I don't see how it is when the comparison makes no sense. Blood magic is a tool, one that can be used for benevolent or malevolent purposes, and that's dependant on the respective blood mage. Grey Warden mages have used blood magic to give them an edge against the darkspawn, as Duncan notes. Merrill uses it to cleanse a shard of the taint and to discern whether or not Keran is possessed or not; she never misuses her abilities for any malevolent purposes, so I don't see why you're so insistent on vilifying her for becoming a blood mage.

I adore Merrill, even though she makes a lot of grievous mistakes. The clumsiness, innocence and her shy personality are what I liked about her and made me vastly prefer her over Isabella, unpopular opinion, but there it is XD <<<<<<<<<<(0)>>>>>>>>>> Went for her as well. Well written. Her innocence (social limitations) was revealed when she lived in the city enclave for elves. Unafraid and good char to take on missions.

I'm in the middle of trying to do a complete run. And I picked her as the one to try and romance (awkward party makeup, as she doesn't have much in the way of healing, and I'm a warrior). She says 'um' alot. And sorry alot. Which I think is adorable.

For all her faults, Merrill certainly doesn't hold on to grudges.
She defends Anders when Hawke is deciding his fate and opposes the idea of sending Fenris back into slavery.
All despite the fact that they've called her a monster and told her she should've died instead of Marethari.

Asking about what it takes to start romances. Honestly, the one time I romanced Merril was female and I didn't stick with it past the sex scene. It seemed Merril was totally oblivious to my flirts being flirts. Never talked to me as if we could be more than friends. Then shows up sad at my mansion one day.
1. Does it seem like more of a romance where she acknowledges what's happening if Hawke is male?
2. What flirt lines are essential to her showing up in the mansion? Must you use all flirt lines to really beat it into her head that you're interested? or is there 1 or 2 essential ones to get it going? Does a single flirt at any point get it going?

No, not anymore than with a female Hawke. Merrill is just oblivious to flirts being flirts rather than being innocent in nature. 2. You have to flirt with her at least once. I don't believe any specific flirts are mandatory for the romance to start.

Merrill getting lost at the Conclave, wandering straight into Corypheus' ritual and innocently picking up the Orb of Destruction would be very in-character for her. I may have to steal this idea for fanfic, because Merrill leading the Inquisition would be hilarious.

I may have to steal this idea for fanfic, because Merrill leading the Inquisition would be hilarious. I'll just come right out and say Merrill was my primary inspiration for my Lavellan Inquisitor. Well, to a point, you can't play the Inquisitor as having quite the same personality. But there's a lot of the story that just would have been very fitting for Merrill to have been in the game. I did wonder how she would have reacted at the Temple of Mythal, for example. How far would she have taken her goal to restore the Dalish, would she have trusted Morrigan? Would she have befriended Solas, or seen him as a threat to her people? The initial bantering/arguing about the Dalish between Lavellan and Solas did remind me a bit of Merrill and Fenris, though, when she tells him "they are your people too". She's not my favorite DA2 romance, but I think that may have to do with the fact I kind of more liked the idea of Merrill and Carver. I don't know, I'm kind of torn on companions/LIs flirting and romancing each other (like Dorian, Iron Bull). I tend not to go for the ones that do, like my PC is getting in the way of something. I know that's silly. Anyway. Some more Merrill art.

Merrill was the inspiration for my Mage Lavellan. My non-mage was inspired by Lan Fan from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood(funnily enough this fit even more come Trespasser when like Lan Fan the Inquisitor loses their left arm. Here's hoping this continues with the Inquisitor coming back in DA4 with an automail a prosthetic arm ). Judging from what we know of her and things like what Varric says in Trespasser, I don't think Merrill would have continued trying to reclaim the old ways after learning the truth about the Creators. I think she would have trusted Morrigan since she is the daughter of Asha'bellanar. And I definitely think she would not support Solas with his current plans. He is the devil od her religion if she didn't know the truth about the Evanuris, and she has friends among the Dwarves and Humans so wouldn't want to bring them harm. I'm the same. There are few things that ruin romances for me more than them getting paired with someone else, since then I feel if I romance them I am getting in the way of something. It's why I can't romance Tali or Garrus anymore. Luckilly Merrill and Carver never get together and really just seems like a more one-sided thing where Carver has a crush but isn't reciprocated. Plus I mostly play as a Rogue, so Carver isn't around in most playthroughs anyway. That's a cool image. I like how it is a reflection on the water, imitating a mirror.
