In it's 46'th year, a new version of the Blackhawk family is entering service. HH-60W The usual stuff, new instruments, electronics, more powerful engines, new rotor... It's a combat rescue helicopter, so is armed and also has special equipment for that role.

Remember that old B&W French newsreel that featured a guy who had made himself a wingsuit? And jumped from the Eiffel tower flapping his arms? And fell like a stone and killed himself?
Well, that was tragic. It's hard to see his face and not get a human link to the poor man. Anyway, such crazies are not gone.
I don't understand why this is even legal. I really don't like the design. Static flying wings is absolute crap and something to stay very far away from. There are hardly any stability margins or control margins. This is an accident waiting to happen.

An old movie clip featuring the Air Force exhibition group 'Thunderbirds' from back in the days when they flew Republic Thunderstreaks. The Thunderstreak's original designation was F-96. However, it was developed from the F-84 Thunderjet, and the AF pulled its patented PR trick of assigning an old designation to the new plane - "Oh, no, we're not buying yet another new plane, it's just another version", despite that the commonality was only 15%, so it became the F-84F Thunderstreak (forcing the last version of the Thunderjet to become F-84G). F-84F became a rather important NATO fighterbomber during the early cold war. The outright flight performance was not sensational for its day, but it took a good load and had a rather impressive range.
I seem to remember that one of the roles the USAF had for the F-84F was as a nuclear bomber. Tactical nukes were to be deployed by "Toss-bombing". The plane showed its mettle, and legs, during an incident that was rather humiliating for the Soviet Union. Two West German F-84Fs got lost and flew deep across the border. A large part of the Soviet air force chased them in vain. Despite being controlled by their ground radar stations, they were unable to catch them (not entirely surprising, since the F-84F set a number of speed records over very long distances), and the F-84Fs finally escaped by landing in Berlin. I seem to remember (this was in some history TV show) that they crated the planes to bring them out. Probably had to, since it was a military plane.
Turkish F-84F shot down some Iraqi Soviet built planes in another incident.
The F-84F was in service 1954-1972, which is not bad, considering that it was one of the early jet types. Today, combat planes can see service for 40 - 60 years, but during the rapid evolution during the 50s, things got obsolete rather quickly.

This is so ridiculously unreal that it's funny. ...that takeoff... I was wondering if there was something wrong with my perception, given the enormous power of modern jet engines and modern thrust to weight ratios, so I had to time this and compare with videos of modern fighters. There was nothing wrong with my perception. That takeoff is ridiculous. It throws itself straight up into the air after 9 seconds of acceleration. A F-35A, for comparison, accelerates for 18 seconds before laboriously getting airborne, continuing to accelerate for a long time before initiating any steep climb. ...And there is like 50 years between them. ...And that landing is pretty ridiculous too.

And everybody who just watched SpaceX' testflight of the Starship SN8, now know why it's called 'suicide burn'.
Spectacularly successful flight! And if the engines had worked properly it'd probably have stuck the landing.
Better generation of the engine is already and will be installed in SN9, the next guinea pig.
Edit: P.S. Actually, it was loss of pressure in the header tanks. The engines may otherwise have worked perfectly.

For those of you who haven't seen it yet. These rockets are the prototypes for the second stage. This being the SN8, a very successful flight except for the last moments of the landing. There was a loss of fuel pressure. This was anticipated and due to the attitude changes, the flip. There was an engineered fix, but it didn't quite work all the way. The SN9 will do better. And it will fly just about anytime soon.

It hasn't even been painted yet.
F-15EX is the new F-15 that the Air Force needs to replace the old F-15C, which are going to crumble soon and are already very expensive to maintain. Main reason for this mess is that Obama closed down the F-22 production line.
Eventually, the F-15EX may be purchased to replace F-15Es too.

...And the SpaceX SN9 crashed too, just like SN8. But slightly different reason. In this case it wasn't fuel pressure. It was one engine failing (and even breaking).
It needs 2 engines fully functioning to stick the landing. Next time, they may elect to restart all three, and then shut down one, as needed.
And these are test-prototypes for Starship's second stage, in case anyone wondered.

NASA is mostly explanations on the level of uh, MSM, but not so many and not so big lies.
And everything that goes on on JPL, you get better coverage of on Everyday Astronaut.
