Just wanna point out that No Man’s Sky launched with no multiplayer. With the Next update, it had multiplayer. So it’s not exactly “better” multiplayer - it had multiplayer added. What can they learn, in a nutshell, is it’s still possible to implement enough positive changes and useful features to make the game draw new people in again. That’s about it...

ps: Bioware is the studio that gave EA more than a billion in revenue with SWTOR. I find unlikely that will happen as long as their games give profit.

But how drastic of changes? Modern NMS is a totally different game from vanilla NMS. Could Anthem see similar drastic changes? I mean stuff along the line of a unique SP campaign totally separate from the online offering. Perhaps additions to Fort Tarsis....PvP etc....

So speaking of SWTOR, that eventually became solo friendly. In fact, most of the recent expansions were essentially SP stories and they were all well recieved. Could we see something similar with Anthem? Would Bioware be so bold enough to add a SP centric update? Or will they continue to double down on the MP?

Years later, NMS is nothing like its vanilla form....almost like a better quality sequel with an actual story, better MP and other features. So assuming EA doesnt pull the plug on Bioware, what lessons can be learned from NMS and applied to Anthem? The problem with NMS was that it wasn't a financial failure. There was so much hype around it. The game was the best sold on Steam for weeks leading up to release. Huge pre-order numbers. No early access for gamers or press, so everyone got to play on release day with full hype. When people started to find out the game was shallow at the same time as press and streamers. They already played too much of it to get a refund. So a indie game that should've been 20 bucks in early access (like Subnautica) already sold millions for 60 bucks. Since it was made by a small team, Sony and Hello Games already got more money from it than they could wish for. Everything Hello Games did since isn't about making more money, but to justify the money they already got.

Years later, NMS is nothing like its vanilla form....almost like a better quality sequel with an actual story, better MP and other features. So assuming EA doesnt pull the plug on Bioware, what lessons can be learned from NMS and applied to Anthem? That's a pretty generous description. I am one of those people who got swayed into purchasing the game after the NEXT update and I've spent about 200 hours now with it, half of the time playing in co-op, and don't regret paying 27 bucks for it.
It's sort of good now. But the game doesn't really have much of a story. It's still a super repetitive grind with no real goal and very low planet variety. That said there is a loooot to keep people busy now. Just unlocking all base buildings parts through the workstation questline takes many hours. It's all fetch quests though. Even the "story" is just planet hopping. And the "twist" is so apparent (if it didn't get spoiled by the launch reviews) that there is no surprise to anything you do. No real sense of discovery once you have seen the whopping variety of biomes of EIGHT. Plus a few exotic planets added fairly recently.
That said, as a chill base building game it can be fun if you debug yourself all the resources... Subnautica is in many ways a much better game with an actual story. And it cost me less.
Hello Games has worked hard on making NMS the game they promised. I'm sure they weren't just doing it out of the goodness of their hearts though but because their future as a game developer depended on fixing the game. If they'd taken the money and run, it would have been career suicide. EA can afford to screw people over and still make billions. Bioware can't. But we don't know if EA will let them redeem themselves. So imo it's less about learning from Hello Games but being allowed to fix Anthem.

I dont want EA to kill Bioware. I just wanted Anthem to fail so that Bioware/EA can see the light which is that Bioware needs to focus on SP games. Not saying they cant do MP additions, but always have SP as the focus. ME3/DAI/MEA did this well. They were at the core SP games but had an optional MP feature that tied into the main story and sort of gave you a reason to play the MP. EA or Bioware got $$$ greedy and decided to go all in with the MP and just toss SP to the side. Perhaps DA4 is also some sort of GaaS shared world story like Anthem.

Don't oversell your game and what it truly offers. Plug probably won't get pulled, so at this point, all BioWare can really do is learn from others; though admittedly that should have been the case already. This first Act (Act 01), and maybe some of the next Act, will likely be them trying to stabilize the game so most bugs and technical issues are no longer prevalent; in addition to fixing the loot system. After that, they're likely going to have a ton of work to do on both overhauling several gameplay systems and adding content to the game. As it currently stands, this game probably won't feel like it's come into its own until probably more than a year after release.
- The UI needs to be redesigned to allow for a stats page and better menu navigation - People need to be able to access their loot more readily; while out in the field - The loot system in general needs an overhaul - The mission design elements of the game need more variety - Freeplay needs more going on, and better world building elements - The story campaign needs to be more compelling - Changes to a lot of underlying technical problems (most notably - load screens)
As it stands, this game is gonna be more akin to needing a FFXIV overhaul than a large expansion (ala Destiny) or patch (The Division 1) to fix what's going on. People will undoubtedly leave, and are very likely doing so in droves right now; given The Division 2's release. With that said, they'll retain a playerbase, and depending on how well each patch/content update goes, they may be compelled to stick around longer.

Yeah - I have no confidence Bioware can turn this around. It's one thing to make some off design decisions when you're an early entrant into the market, like No Man's Sky or Destiny. It's quite another to botch it despite years' of data on what works and what doesn't. And games like Destiny didn't have fundamental issues with the engine to deal with - its core physics and handling were always snappy and felt good.
I hardly play Anthem anymore. Judging from my experience with Andromeda, I doubt anything short of a massive relaunch/complete overhaul would bring me back.
Bought DMC5 this morning and can't wait to dig in. TD2 also looks really nice.

We know that they're currently mocapping more scenes (as revealed by Caroline Livingstone), so there's gonna be more cutscenes down the road; likely tied to Singleplayer. When these cinematics arrive in the game is unclear.

I think given the recent situation, it makes sense to necro this thread. So yes, for all those who still believe this game can be saved and a year from now be a completely new game....what can be learned from how No Man's Sky transformed? What does the Anthem 2.0 or "re-introduction" look like? I'm going out on a limb and assume some sincerity with this premise so, here goes: Immediate Changes: - We are in the beginning of Act I of a supposed year long (ACT II and III to follow through the end of the year). so "Anthem" won't necessarily be getting an re-introduction as much as building momentum through quality of life changes (besides the obvious ones like pinging help from a downed Javelin, waypoints on maps, being able to change gear out in the field) and content drops - The biggest quality of life changes I can see that can make an immediate impact at this point are: 1) Fix Quickplay 2) Fix Loot 3) Make GM2 and GM3 a rewarding experience. - Quickplay is likely the "easiest" of the three to fix right away and they have created a thread on the official forums in an effort to centralize the issues to address this more quickly. The idea of Quickplay is pretty solid as people drop out of activities all the time due to various reasons and it enables BioWare to back-fill with solo players looking for action. I played GM1 Quickplay yesterday and was able to drop in on a GM1 level Legendary contract that needed assistance - it's a good premise. However, from experience, GM1 level is hit and miss in terms of if you'll end up in a "dead" mission or not and it gets even more complicated as you get into GM2 and GM3. - Loot drops seems like the "easiest" to fix, right? Just turn the little knob and let the oranges and yellows fall but it's more complicated than that if you are considering a more long term fix. They have to strike the right balance between rewarding and creating a sense that what you accomplished was somewhat unique in context of other players are experiencing. The loot drops for MWs and LGs could also be increased but with the inscriptions, while still relevant to the item you obtained, be more variable so the emphasis is on re-rolling with MW embers to get the best in terms of weapons and inscriptions. - Solving the loot problem feeds into making GM2 and GM3 more rewarding for attempting to play at significantly tougher levels - the two go hand in hand. As of tomorrow, the game will have been out three weeks so players who go it on release and play it a decent amount of time have finished the main quest-line and are likely grinding at GM1 or GM2. They need to have a clear way to communicate to those getting to GM2 and GM3, or already there, that it's worth playing at the highest possible difficulties. Changes in the next few months: - Mission variance and frequency in freeplay will be big as it provides you with a reason to play the game beyond story content updates and re-running the same three strongholds (for now). For the first couple of weeks, I was getting a lot of the same mission type and they weren't that frequent but, in the last few days, I've been seeing different types of missions pop up, world events are being marked on the map, and random world events are becoming more frequent. I completed an Archanist World Event marked on the map last night that was quite challenging solo on GM1 and had some nice MW embers and loot for my trouble. Another was a challenge battling Ursix in the NW area of the map that got me a Legendary gear piece. Frequent and rewarding events and variance in mission design will keep freeplay fresh and giver you a reason to check in everyday. - New story related missions will be essential in the next couple of months to hold the interest of early adopters and will give people just starting to play in April-May a beefier narrative experience. We've experienced the prelude, and the narrative leaps at times were a bit disjointed, so ACT I will have to be tantalizing in terms of where it is leading the player and up the stakes. So far, it is only the Freelancer that is experiencing the danger of the missions but Fort Tarsis itself (the NPCs, found codexes, etc) will have to start becoming aware of the imminent danger. - These new narrative plot points will need to bring more innovative missions and should be a showcase where the designers can show off a bit. One thing that hasn't really been exploited in terms of being interwoven with the mission is your skill at flying the Javelin. - They are going to need new Strongholds beyond the three that they have (one for sure is coming out in the next two months) and they will need to differentiate themselves from what has come before. Longer term: - Have servers that allow more than four players that perhaps lend itself to longer and more complex strongholds and challenges. - As an extension to that, start thinking about epic battles that could be experienced by between 25-50 freelancers at once in an intense PvE mode kind of like what is found Battlefront II. Imagine joining 20 or 30 other freelancers in an effort to push back Dominion or Scar forces attempting to penetrate Fort Tarsis and repelling wave after wave of more complex and dangerous enemies in the process. - Continue to progress upgrading of Fort Tarsis and allowing access to other wings including your ability to get your own apartment. - Open up more areas of the map beyond Bastion which will allow for different climates and unique challenges that come with the new environment. - Which will lead to new cities to explore and new NPCs to interact with which will give you more than one HUB world The potential for this game is enormous...hopefully they are given the opportunity.

Yes, full sincerity, not attempted to be a joke or anything. Just want to know what others think could be a possible road map or "example" for how to take a game that got so much negative attention post launch and eventually turn it around for the better. While NMS didnt become this brand new GOTY candidate, it did right the many wrongs it had at launch and in a lot of ways, became a completely new game. Many would say they do not give Hello Games any credit because thats how the game should have always been, but I give Hello Games credit for sticking with it to implement player feedback and not giving up on it. While personally I may not care, it would be interesting if say....June of 2020 we get a "Anthem Reborn" style E3 trailer essentially serving as a relaunch of the game that is many ways a totally revamped game with many additional features like a SP only story/mode....perhaps even PvP....10 Javelin raids....new hub locations outside of Ft. Tarsis and much more. Again, I doubt this would ever happen but interested to see what others may think.

Speaking of Hello Games, No Man’s Sky’s 2019 update was announced today. Nothing really stated, just a vague announcement IMO.

I’m not sure players have the patience to stick with this game for a year to wait for it to transform into something awesome. People did with Destiny. And the second one for that matter.

Players are gullible?
If marketing gets the gaming community interest to a critical mass, you can throw them a broken mess of a game at launch. Add the appeal of a "live service" to improve the game as time goes by and the publisher has a good chance at success.

So yes, for all those who still believe this game can be saved and a year from now be a completely new game....what can be learned from how No Man's Sky transformed? More content and evolution. The underlying game is sound.
