If we get a new protagonist, I'm toying with the idea of playing a male dwarf. All my previous protags have been female. And I like the idea of a naturally magic resistant Templar in Tevinter, where it'd be particularly useful. So if Templar, or something equivalent, is a spec, I plan on doing it.
Of course, I planned on a female qunari mage on my first run of DAI. Then Solas happened, and I ended up with a dual dagger elf rogue so... We'll see how much this holds up. lol

My first protag is always the blandest blank slate type so I can feel out the game a bit and then and roll the canon (or more canon anyway) one, so male human warrior or something.

human female mage with long red hair. She doesn't take crap from anyone. Her favorite spells are walking bomb and crushing prison. On occasion she likes to burn her victims just to add variety.

More or less what Nightscrawl said.
I may build a vague idea of who my character is beforehand, but my first playthrough is generally a dry run. I form my following RP around the options and story of the game.
EDIT: currently I’m playing with the idea of a Qunari mage raised as a slave in Tevinter, but unsympathetic to the Qun because of how they treat mages. I have no idea if something like that will be an option.

Knowing myself, I'll have to sit in front of the CC before deciding anything, and even then I might change my mind early on.
However, atm, I'm contemplating whether it'll be more interesting to play an Elf or whether it'll be better to distance myself from all things elven and play something else. Since Solas most likely is going to play a prominent role, an elf could have interesting implications. On the other hand, I already have two elven Inquisitors (one of which I'll most likely use as my first PT) and even if DA:I turns out to be irrelevant, it'll still be lore in my head. In other words, It could potentially be even more interesting to start a fresh PT where everything elven is irrelevant to the PC.

As always I will start with a human male rogue. A Robin Hoodish kind of character. And then I will restart several times because there will be something wonky about his face

This thread is pretty much the main reason I DO NOT WANT the Inquisitor to be our only protagonist. So many interesting and creative possibilities for new characters would be lost . Anyway, I have several types, and which one ultimately becomes my Dragon Age 4 main depends on the game: 1.Classic Paragon hero. 2. Snarky adventurer, fun loving if slightly loopy and nihilistic. 3. Bookworm, tends to be rational and methodical, but also overly cautious and distant. 4. Someone who had a tragic, horrible life and wants to make the world pay. 5. The Mastermind, a ruthlessly pragmatic and ambitious one who wants to carve a new dynasty. 6. A shy and funny in nervous ways Ordinary Joe in way over their head. Basically, my most honest self insert . Now, just because they start there doesn't mean they will finish there; 1 could be broken by tragedy, 4 could learn empathy for others and/or 6 could discover confidence and abilities they never thought possible. Or not . Things may change when I actually play the game, but right now 5 looks like it would be the most fun in Tevinter.

generally I don't even finish my first playthroughs to the end, I get near the end...delete that character and start over don't ask me why, it's just the way I play the only thing I know that I'll do with my character in DA4 is that she'll be a human female rogue as to what kind of character she'll be, that'll depend on the story and specialization I can give her (I'm hoping for something new and exciting )

I don´t care but it should be everything else than human. If you can choose your race why stick with boring humans? Especially this a feature which was criticized by many for hadn´t been a part of DA 2. So i have no choice for my first character to play as a non human hero.

One thing i do know about my first character is that they're gonna be anti slavery and if there is any opportunity to start a rebellion or improve the rights of liberati then shes going to take it.
Alright technically 2 things cause my first character is always a she.

I'm hoping to make a Qunari fighter that can hopefully dual wield once again! If not probably a mage of some sort. Mostly good to any allies and friends but brutal to his enemies. And hopefully i can make him look as cool as this

Well, my DAO first character was an Elf mage. My DA2 first character was a warrior. And my DAI first character was a Dwarf rogue.
So, I suppose that if qunari are an option again, My first character will be a qunari mage.

If there's an option to play a Qunari mage who's so strong that regular staffs break so they end up using a steel bar as their staff, I want to play as that.

No. The first play is always sort of a dry run for me where I learn the story and circumstances. I develop RP based on that experience and will then have my "real" run. It essentially boils down to knowing what the game will allow me to create and change. It's pointless for me to develop something in advance to later find out that the idea is not workable. Yeah my first playthrough is a dry run whereas I play as myself and by that I make the decisions that I would make if I were in that situation. But as for type of character I suspect mage wil be my class .As mage is always the class I've played first in the first 3 games and I see no reason to change for DA4. However I suspect my type will be human female mage

That's depends of the main character, if we can use the inquisitor it's going to be a female elf (rogue)
But if its a new character, maybe a female human, noble it its possible. I want to be a tevinter noble.

Probably a human warrior. No other dwarf could realistically compare to my warrior princess warden, and my Inquisitor is an elven mage so both of those are kind of out.
Templar specialization if possible, or whatever anti-magic warriors Tevinter may or may not have developed.

They don’t really have special Lyrium powers like Templars, but instead they have been specially trained to hunt mages. Marius is an example.

One of those guys then, if Bioware can swing it. Just not a hotheaded rebel like Marius. If I'm going to play an Imperium citizen then he's going to be for the Imperium, and view his duties in that light. I'm surprised they don't use lyrium though. It doesn't sound like Tevinter to shy away from something that would make its forces more effective. Unless lyrium impacting Templar abilities really is just a myth.

Their mages need the lyrium, why would they waste it to strengthen their Templars? Against whom? The mages able to handle other mages. But of course, they use lyrium for their experiments to strengthen their non-mage bodyguards, for example, Fenris, and who knows, other Magisters what did with their slaves.

I imagined a surplus, given their ability to throw slave lives at the mining and refinement of it, where the Chantry had to rely on importation from Orzammar and tranquil labor. And really, no amount of lyrium is going to make any singular templar a match for a powerful blood mage, while a weak and inexperienced mage is easily killed by any determined guy with a sharp piece of steel. As such, I'd be more worried about a bunch of mage-killers running around the Imperium without being addicted to a state-controlled drug. Seems like that's just a recipe for disaster. Unless the mage-killers are disciplined and loyal and mindful of their civic responsibilities, as mine will be if we get to play one.
