Maybe. But they wanted to do MP. Yep...they intended MP/COOP from the beginning so it's kind of irrelevant what someone else feels what it could have been.

And it may still be. Rambo lone wolfing Freeplay to get certain challenges done (like the 2nd set of challenges on that wall) might be the most fun I've been having past 2 days.

Yeah, my routine right now is to complete the three legendary contracts and then get lost exploring in Freeplay. It's challenging but not impossible to solo on GM1 and you can take out Scar encampments, raid and clear the various "dungeons", do World Events, or drop in on the battles of the other three randoms on the server to change it up. I'm always finding something to do...

I think being a hybrid really allows this game to kind of do that already. Fort Tarsis being entirely separate permits content that wouldnt work in a true social space, and I do all contracts and freeplay solo as it is. The campaign was definitely solo.

While all the compromises they had to make due to it being an MP/coop focused game do drag down the SP experience, I feel like it's not a bad SP game as it is. Could it have been a much better SP game if that was the development goal in the first place? Sure but even now, I am playing the campaign completely on my own and it does work fairly well actually.

Yup, it's just a matter of adding more future story content (which is on their outlined road map for additions) and this game can be very good for solo players. They still have to find the right balance between multiplayer aspects and story though. For my liking there could be more dialogue (less likely) or cut scenes (more likely, this would be my suggestion) in the open world out of Fort Tarsis, although I understand that it is hard to implement when people prefer to play in groups. Edit: I would like it for example if at the end of missions there wouldn't be a mission ends countdown, but instead a cutscene or a dialogue with the respective agents, before it takes us automatically to the Fort. Because everyone would get to the Fort eventually, some people out of a team taking more time at the end of missions shouldn't be an issue.

Yea, I think this is (unsurprisingly) the biggest drag-down of the MP focus for the SP experience. The disconnect between the gameplay world and Fort Tarsis.
For me, I am not even asking for more cutscenes or dialogue scenes outside of the fort (it would be great but I get that the coop doesn't really allow that)/ However, I would like more story missions to come out of dialogues we have in Fort Tarsis. There were so many oportunities already: - A mission to help "sexy danger" lady (forgot her name) to get her Javelin back from the regulators - A mission to catch baby animals for the crazy petting lady - We actually have to infiltrate a Dominion camp to look for the code word of operation Prism Tacit - Search for the remains/whereabouts of the daughter of the painter lady - Get some special grain samples for the new bakery's indoor farm.
I could go on but you get the picture. One of the things that upset me the most about these dialogues outside of the main plot was that they seemed so confined to Tarsis and we never had any real involvement. Making them lead to missions would have been a huge step in the right direction IMO.

The ability to squad up is basically the reason for that countdown, since it forces all players to run at a certain pace. My preference would have been to be left in open play once the contract ends, and we don’t get the XP rundown until actually selecting to return to the Fort. I doubt many would want this, but I’d even love to be able to just fly all the way back to the fort and simply return through the launch bay.

I think they went in over the heads with trying to make a majority of the game run only online. Them having to create a network infrastructure that could handle all the games intricacies, in addition to it being on the Frostbite engine, probably bit them in the ass. The game was far bigger than what they could chew. Dragon Age: Inquisition was able to work pretty well on the engine primarily because it was a singleplayer experience. No significant amount of netcode was needed.
More than likely, they needed to spend so much time just trying to get the game to run in this type of environment, they likely weren't able to finish many of the ideas they had in mind. I remember some members at BioWare saying that, previously, each Javelin was supposed to have a unique mission in order to obtain them. I wouldn't be surprised if that got cut because they were pressed for time already.

I still believe they intended Anthem to be a Singleplayer RPG at the beginning, until EA said otherwise. It would really explain the extreme lack of content based on 6 years of development.

There is also a claim out there that Casey Hudson wanted some online mechanics in Mass Effect 1, so there is a possibility that those ideas evolved into Anthem. Course a push from EA probably helped.

I doubt it. GAAS are the thing now. I'm honestly shocked we didn't get Mass Effect Online instead of Andromeda. I think they've been going in this direction since ME2.

I would never be able to get into it with everything in Fort Tarsis being in the first person. Care to elaborate further? I like seeing my character. I like seeing my character interacting with people. I assume the game would have had a better CC if it were SP. But what would be the point if you never see your character in Fort Tarsis, and you're always in a Javalin outside. Bioware is going more and more away from the old cutscene style and is using the style where the camera angle just shifts but you stay in the live world. I already don't like this, and I think it's even worse in the first person. I'm probably in the minority because I just don't like first-person games in general. If a game gives me an option, I'll always play in 3rd person. I even play Skyrim in the third person.

Don't know if you guys remember "Shadow Realms" or not but it was BioWare Lead Designer James Ohlen's baby that was announced 07/2014, had some marketing attached to it but ultimately was shelved 02/2015 to focus on DA:I, ME:A, and Anthem. It was a four-versus-one, the "one" being like a DM of sorts, that was played CO-OP missions in third person perspective. It seems like it's an idea that's been kicked around the studio for a bit. Whether is influenced "Anthem" or was seen as redundant since it was similar to "Anthem", not sure...I once asked on Twitter and was never given an answer.

I played all story missions on "hard" with random matchmaking..you get the best available loot, everyone is pushing towards the same goal, and cut-scenes are all solo. But, yeah, you could totally solo on "normal" and not have trouble.

This isnt like MEA where the scope kept changing and by the time they came to a final concept, they only had 18 months til release. This was the Bioware A+ team that had a solid 6 years development to include pulling people from other projects to work on this. 6 years of development....
