Fenris is actually one of the characters I do want to see return. Like most DA2 or DAA companions. Especially Slave Fenris is something that Bioware has to do for DA 4 and this unique worldstate. But it would be waste of resources to create an awesome Fenris charactermodel just for do that. So the "normal" Fenris will likely show up with the Fog Warriors. I agree but i think that Leliana is most overused character. She is in almost everything.

he had his reasons on being 'a dick' He had reasons to be worried, but not to act the way he did. It looked like the Inquisition murdered his children With the way he acted i was actually ready to murder his children

Anyone who could be dead. It depends on the character. Fenris would stay dead if killed in DA 2 but with Sten, Shale, Architect, Velanna or Calpernia is the question were dead in the first place?

Sten and Velanna, I do not think death is ever confirmed. With the Architect, there is doubt that death would stick, if he is like Corypheus. But characters like Sigrun, Nathaniel, Iron Bull, Blackwall, Krem, Stroud etc, who can potentially be dead and confirmed dead, no I don't want to see them again. Heck, Alistair can be dead several times over by now!

How many character deaths were retconed in total? DAA Oghren; DA2 Anders, Justice, Flemeth and Leliana; DAI: Corypheus, Morrigan and Samson. Only DA2 Anders + Justice and maybe Leliana were bad in my opinion. Anders on his own did get a passable explanation.
Also it really depends what Bioware make out this characters. It would totally recton Sten for the purpose of having him in a big role for DA 4.

It's not (just) about retconning deaths, it's about making cameos small and pointless because they have to account for the character not being there.

I would prefer not to see returning companions. In DAO and DAA, I was satisfied with the ending slides I received. I didn't like that some of them got handwaved, leaving me with no idea with what actually happened. After all, if Anders who 'found a home with the Wardens' at the end of DAA, turned up in Kirkwall with a dislike of the Wardens...what actually happened to the others?
I worry about seeing my good-hearted mage Warden showing up as a Magister sacrificing kittens to the Great Demon.

I worry about seeing my good-hearted mage Warden showing up as a Magister sacrificing kittens to the Great Demon. I don't think, our Warden was there, when Ser Pounce exiled. Your good-hearted mage Warden still innocent in kitten sacrifice. If you spoke with Anders, he said, he didn't really like the Warden-life, only preferred it compared to the Circle. But not this was the real reason he left. It was the Templar who pursued him, and find out, he's possessed. (Anders' short story.) And Karl. Anyway, I don't want to see him again, and I also have problem with the other LIs, Fenris for example. While I would like to see them, I don't want to see to ruin my story. Anders/Justice's return in DA2 was (almost) perfect to me. He was the perfect person on this role. But I have the perfect end with him and my Hawke(s), and this strengthened in DAI. So, let them live in peace, together. Or let him rest in peace, if someone killed him. I don't want to see a Justice/Vengeance-monster in Anders' corpse (or in anyone else's corpse or living body...), runs amok. But I especially want to see Dorian, for a proper closure... and he will return, I'm sure, because of Tevinter. (I'm a little bit afraid, but this romance and his story quite open yet.)

For example Slave Fenris with Danarius would be a small cameo because a lot of people didn´t do this to Fenris but Bioware can give the normal Fenris a role similar to the Wardens ally in DAI. They can solve this problem therefore with replacement characters.
ME 3 used a lot replacement characters for its storytelling. Especially for the Tuchanka arc it had worked fine.

That's actually a pretty expensive answer. having to hire actors to do all sorts of variant lines, plus different VA to recite pretty much teh same lines to reflect an absent character, is not cheap. I actually thought it was pretty lame in most cases.

They don´t have to do this to all characters. I don´t even think that DA 4 will use it to extent like ME 3. Maybe just 3-4 characters like DAI. Wreav wasn´t the best character in the series but he was atleast interessing.
Padok Wiks on the other hand was awesome.

From DA: O: Wynne, Oghren, Loghain, Alistair (hecking shows up every game), Leliana, Zevran
From DA2: Varric (because we can never romance him anyways), Varric’s brother, Carver, Hawke, Fenris (though he’s dead in my world state anyways...), Aveline, Isabela
DA: I: (so far, since I haven’t completed it yet) Solas, that dopey kid in the weird hat that I kicked from my group, Sera, Iron Bull, Cullen, Leliana again
Some I don’t like and some I just really don’t want to see again, because the studio feels like “oh we need to put in a character from a past game so the player feels nostalgic” and so I just don’t want that nostalgia character to be any of these.

Only these 3 DAI characters? This is first unlikely and second to be honest a little bit boring. Also for example no Love for Sten as the new Arishok?
Sten is mandatory for the Tevinter vs Qunari War. I couldn´t imagine a DA 4 without him.
Don´t get me wrong i agree with you that DA 4 should feature more new characters than old ones but there some who have to return. And Sten is one of them.

Ah, forgot about Sten! I'd actually like to see him again, even though he'll probably be trying to put a sword through us.
But yeah that's it. Cameos never seem to go over well, and with all of the different possible world/character states I'd just rather they spent that time and VA budget on new rather than all possibilities of old. This is assuming a new protag of course, if they actually bring back the Inquisitor I'd like to see many of the old cast.

I like that we have different worldstates and not just one. And DA 4 also needs cameos like slave Fenris and his master Danarius which you can argue are a waste of ressources but it makes DA 4 and this playthrough special. Also if Bioware follow your view whats even the point of using the Dragon Age Keep?
The good thing about a DA 4 who has very likely Tevinter and maybe Seheron & Weisshaupt as setting is that the majority of characters make less or no sense to reappear.

It did mention that he took off once but that he returned 'and the Wardens remained his home.' So, this is one of the epilogues they handwaved away like Cullen becoming a serial killer.
I agree with you about Dorian. He would make sense to appear. I just don't want to see folks who have no real reason other than fan service to show up, like Zevran in DA2.

The whole DA-timeline is a mess – at least there are big black holes in it. So: The Blight started at 9:30 Dragon, and ended at 9:31 Dragon – at this year happened the Awakening-issues in Amaranthine and Vigil's Keep. Few months. Lothering destroyed in 9:30 Dragon, and Hawke's family went to Kirkwall. Hawke spent one year as mercenary/smuggler. At the last months of 9:31 Anders also can arrive in Kirkwall (the time interval is tight, but perhaps, not totally impossibile... – yes, if he threw some books at them...) At the end of 9:31 he meets with Hawke.

Since I also have the slide that said Justice 'served for many years,' I think my ending is just screwed timeline-wise.
Edited to add: I guess any of the advisors/companions shown sticking with the Inquisitor at the end of Trespasser would make sense reappearing since the Inquisitor has definitely got business in Tevinter.

Edited to add: I guess any of the advisors/companions shown sticking with the Inquisitor at the end of Trespasser would make sense reappearing since the Inquisitor has definitely got business in Tevinter. It's even interesting, how Justice served many years... in that rotten corpse... eh... whatever, the epilogues and the timeline in Awakening probably is a mess. Anyway, I love Anders/Justice, and I find him surprisingly consistent, so: I'm happily ignoring the epilogue's fail... Justice got a better body – Anders a goal. This was their fate, I feel. But it would be better if the story had fewer plot holes.

But it would be better if the story had fewer plot holes. Or just leave the epilogues for the real end of the story. Then they can't contradict themselves later on. Will be interesting to see how many of our Trespasser slides are affirmed in the next game, how many are ignored, and how many outright reversed.

I want as few returning characters as they can get away with.
