Lol, lots of people being dazzled by an apparently big number without really thinking about what it means. $100m in revenue is like 1.6 million copies at $60. In reality, it's less factoring in legion of dawn sales at $80 and potentially origin subs attributed to Anthem. That's much fewer than I was expecting. That $3.5m mtx revenue is truly alarming, holy hell. Bear in mind those are only console digital sales & mtx on launch day, and don't include physical sales, Origin sales or subscriptions.
The mtx numbers shouldn't too surprising as they gave you a bunch of coin on launch day, you can earn coin in-game, and honestly there isn't really a whole lot to spend money on period. I suspect BW will fatten Anthem's store up at some point to try and bring in more of those mtx dollars.

I'm aware, the numbers are still low. You can blame the mtx revenue on the initial 40k coin offering plus in-game earnings if you want, but other games like Overwatch had similar systems. The real culprit is almost certainly that the cosmetic store offers little that people want to buy. This hasn't changed over the course of a month now. Doesn't bode well for the revenue tail.

Weapon skins, weapon fire animations (some of them are trully horrible and hurt eyes atm) and weapon sounds will sell like hotcakes.

I was all aboard the hype train basically as soon as they confirmed cosmetic only mtx, until the demo came out. I just seriously doubt they can turn it around, and the information we've been receiving, properly interpreted, does not improve the outlook.

Or the report it sold almost it's entire physical inventory - approximately 93% - in Japan? Every report is indicating it had a great financial launch despite average reviews... There is no "misinterpretation"...there were figures presented followed by a lot of "yeah, buts...". We'll all see what we want to see.

One thing is for certain, there appears to be no panic in terms of sales for EA or BioWare.
Here we are, a month into "Anthem's" release and a week into "Division 2's" release, and the only place it is on sale right now is physical copies of the game on Amazon and PS4 physical copies at Walmart...Bestbuy, Gamestop, and Target all have physical and digital copies of all versions at full price 10 days from the end of the financial quarter.
Obviously, that might change at any point...maybe we see $10-$20 price drops across the board as a final push to the quarter's end if they are really concerned about a "per unit" number but I'm guessing it's more by revenue dollars and Origin/Origin Premier subscriptions but I'm not an expert so I could be wrong in that assumption.
One thing I'm counting on seeing at some point is the expansion of the Shard Store. They've essentially rotated almost the same inventory of a few items since launch so don't be surprised if BioWare continues to be criticized for not providing ENOUGH monitization options in their store and, in response to "fan demand", they expand the store with a section for items for permanent display that have rotated through a few times and new items.

Sounds awesome if you close your eyes to the fact what games were competing against it in a pretty dry year. How big was the 93% sold in Japan inventory? AAA mecha game, so the stock must have been huge there. Half a million copies? A million? More? The Japan number is from 78 000 copies, but I guess 93% sounds better. Just adding to the info. What was the Anthem's competition again in February? Oh, yeah, Jump Force, Super Mario, a hated sales fail Far cry add-on and the number 1 pirated game in 5 years (Metro) because players boycotted Epic Store. You really think beating those is huge? Honestly? Their combined marketing costs are probably less than Anthem's by a long shot. Do you think Anthem will be a top seller in March too against actual AAA releases? Honestly? Do you believe Anthem would have been top seller if any other March AAA game released in February?

We had console wars and now we're entering online store/subscription platform/streaming wars. Just look at the latest shenanigans with Epic store. Ahoy, matey. Black sails on the horizon again ☠ Only entitled folks take to pirating over something like that.

EA held the price line for a while even with BF2 and that shitstorm was many, many, many times bigger than Anthem. So the price will hold for another month at least (maybe a 10 % drop at most) and will drop gradually as the store picks up the pace. You know, I am baffled by Anthem's store. It looks like something put together in a hurry just so there is a placeholder. When the game launched and I went to see what to get I was WTF? But I guess Bioware needs to prioritize right now. They can focus on the store, but will lose players and hence not enough customers for the shinies. So their course is fixing the game first to retain the player base, then probably new content to try and get people back, then maybe more attention to the store. A big enough team may be able to pull two tasks at once, but we have no idea how big the team is right now.

And, Sweet Jesus, the "DAI was only GOTY because is came out in 2014" argument again? Talk about dry... Like I said, something positive is reported about "Anthem"...or any BioWare title, it seems, in perpetuity...and the "yeah, buts" come flying on this forum. I'll guess I'll just keep playing this lowly game until they shut off the servers in October of this year...

Like I said, something positive is reported about "Anthem"...or any BioWare title, it seems, in perpetuity...and the "yeah, buts" come flying on this forum. I'll guess I'll just keep playing this lowly game until they shut off the servers in October of this year... Don't sweat it, SWTOR is not shut down yet after 2.5 years of almost maintenance mode.
And the positive is fine if you ask me, but it doesn't mean you should shut your eyes and ears and sing La La La to the other circumstances surrounding it. I am sure if we pull the bestsellers of February (and other months probably) in past years you will see games you never even heard of. Were they awesome epics because of it? Or just sold good and it's too early to say if it will turn good or bad. I am on the skeptic side about Anthem (obviously), but I can pull my old comments where I expressed no doubt Anthem will sell well at launch purely because of the great marketing and no competition.

I'm not really shutting my eyes to anything because it doesn't ultimately effect me, just the devs, which would suck. As for EA choosing Feb 22 as the launch date, when it was originally announced, six games were initially coming out that day including Metro and Division 2...something had to give so it's very lucky people moved out of the way for "Anthem" or it could have been a different outcome for it's launch.

That being said, I have zero clue what EA is doing with their release strategy for BioWare games after DAI. "Mass Effect Andromeda" was obviously not ready for March 21st, 2017 release as patches 1.01-1.03 were enough to get it into a relatively functioning, albeit exposed, state. On top of that, you allow people 10 hr early access, pre-day 1 patch, through EA Access so people, including critics, can pick it apart prior to release... And then you repeat the pattern (unfinished game, early access through EA Access) with an online-only game that has not sorted out it's connectivity issues. I'm baffled, honestly, as I don't see the long term financial or reputational gain by doing this unless EA just said to BioWare "Release it...now...in whatever state...we need something, anything, for Q4 2018" but, again, it feels incredibly short sighted.

Same way I see it. But they also had Apex to boost revenue. I wonder if they could postpone Anthem just a bit and rely on Apex more. But two revenue options are better than one. Whatever Anthem sells it's good for the Q4 report and EA needs as much as it can after the stock drops at the end of 2018.

More like something is posted that is misinterpreted as positive, when it's not. I'd love for Anthem to do well and get its shit together. I was all aboard the hype train basically as soon as they confirmed cosmetic only mtx, until the demo came out. I just seriously doubt they can turn it around, and the information we've been receiving, properly interpreted, does not improve the outlook. How is the report that "Anthem was the best selling digital game on PSN for entire month of Feb in only 7 days" misinterpreted as a "positive"? Similar reports for XBox's store as well? Or the report it sold almost it's entire physical inventory - approximately 93% - in Japan? Every report is indicating it had a great financial launch despite average reviews... There is no "misinterpretation"...there were figures presented followed by a lot of "yeah, buts...". We'll all see what we want to see. Explained above. Ignore it if you wish.

I think we talked previously (too lazy to look back at previous posts) about MEA, it's sales, and the reaction to its sales by EA in its Investor call and I am anticipating a similar reaction. "While it was met with mixed reaction critically, sales and engagement were all positive markers and we're pleased overall with its reception" as the combo of Anthem + Apex for Q4 likely means EA hit it's revenue targets. Additionally, EA said themselves that had "modest" expectations for Anthem as a new IP with "only" 6 million copies sold for the quarter. Unless, they exceed this number, or there is a direct question regarding per unit sales across all platforms, I'm not sure per-unit sales is even highlighted.

The only way I can rationalize it is that EA stock took a hammering of multi-millions when Battlefield V was announced to be delayed for a short time. "Battlefield V delay triggers EA share plummet, hedge fund exodus" www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2018-11-16-battlefield-v-delay-triggers-ea-share-plummet-hedge-fund-exodusTo announce Anthem's delay could have presented a fiscal risk that EA was simply not prepared to bear and I'm imagining a conversation like: 'I know you'd like another 6 weeks, but it's not happening...'With a GAAS you can adjust what's ready and what's for later and they shipped on that basis. As a gamer I can appreciate it's a poor call, as an accountant I might do the same to protect the parent company.

Yeah, I'm comfortable believing something like "Release it and we've got your back on support" happened but that's two hits to BioWare in a row...not great I'm thinking some of the trade-off also involved "DA4" as well..."release it now, don't lose money or get our stock beaten, and take your time to get Dragon Age right"
