I should probably have asked this BEFORE I ordered the game. But the price was so low I just couldn't resist it.
I admit I wasn't all that enthusiastic when BioWare first revealed Anthem. To me it looked like a Destiny-clone. But having checked it out a little more it does seem fun. I like games that let me explore different worlds, and from what I can tell that is a big part of Anthem. But how about the story and being able to develop my character and such? And does the game have a compelling story and characters?
No spoilers please!

The story is pretty "meh". The exploration is practically non-existent after a few runs in freeplay. The open world is devoid of life or variety. You can have some fun while running through the campaign but after that is completed, the game becomes a very rote task of running 4 strongholds or doing random contract missions (that are all very samey and boring).
If you got it cheap and aren't expecting the game to be a full time hobby, then sure... it might be worth your time. The game is less broken (functionally) than it was at launch so you should see less disconnects and other game-breaking issues.
I will just say that your initial skepticism of Anthem was correct. Just don't go into it thinking of it as a proper Bioware game. It isn't.

But how about the story and being able to develop my character and such? And does the game have a compelling story and characters? In my view: - The story is decent, though short, but with room to grow as the game gets added to.
- You develop your Javelin's rather than your character.
- You can made decisions over some NPC plotlines, though they don't affect the main story arc.
- I think the characters are good, though again, there is room to grow them more as the game gets added to.
It's not a traditional BioWare RPG, but I found it has more 'life' than most looter/shooters.
I've put around 400 hours in so far and have enjoyed it greatly.

I know there's no dialogue-wheel and no romance options and such. I admit, that's part of why I've avoided the game. From what you both say, I should have some fun with it. I paid the equivalent of 30 USD. Which I think is a fair price for some distraction and fun. SofaJockey: 400 hours?? Colour me impressed! If I get stuck on something I know who to ask.

Since you already bought the game, then you might as well try it out for a couple hours and see. I would just try not to go in with any expectations based on Bioware's other games, or based on what you've heard. I enjoyed it, mostly because I didn't really compare it to anything else and didn't go in with any expectations at all.
It does have story, and the ending is left open ended for further expansion. The game isn't an RPG and the story is linear and not as long, but it does have interesting characters and NPCs to talk to at the Fort. You do get to pick the gender and choose a preset face for your character, which you will see during cut scenes (as long as you wear the default helmet), but everything else in the Fort is first person perspective, and the missions are all inside of the Javelin. Instead of a character creator, there is Forge for customization of your Javelin. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the Mastery System was supposed to be a skill tree that they would like to add at some point? But I'm not sure the status of that or when it's expected. The flying and combat is very fun, and the world is very pretty to fly around in. There is a journal/codex (cortex it's called here), with bits of lore scattered around to find. If you like lore stuff and world building, it's worth reading through.

Thanks. I've known from the start that Anthem isn't like the other BioWare games, so that won't come as a shock. But no Character Creator.... *sad face*
Combat and stuff does seem fun though. I've looked at the different suits... Eh, Javelins... Got my heart seat on Storm.
I'm going to die so hard.lol

I haven't played Anthem since the open beta.
However, in my humble opinion, Torchlight II has a better story, and more loot options. Fuck, I think I'm gonna play that right now.

For the kind of story it is, you won't miss it (and I say that as someone who loves Bioware romances). It doesn't really make any sense for it to be there, given the time line it covers. Some of the dialog is kind of flirty though anyways. The dialogue is not a wheel and you just get two choices, but the choices do differ and it does impact the conversations.

I bought it from an online store, CDON, using a prepaid... whatever they called that I got for my birthday. Gift certificate maybe?
I'll play it on XboxOne. And once I have it, and have installed it and played it for a bit, I'll let you know what I think of it.

I'm still boggled by the fact that BioWare seems to be abandoning a genre they are masters at. Why take Anthem away from story-driven RPG and in a direction that seems a lot more mainstream, not to mention where they go up against established giants like Halo, Battlefield and its ilks? It doesn't make sense to me.

I think it has more in common with Destiny and The Division. I haven’t played either one. The idea is you are meant to get more and more powerful loot, in order to repeat the same content on a higher difficulty. Some people apparently find that fun. Not me. They are doing it because that sort of game makes lots of money apparently

I've played The Division a bit. It was difficult at first before I got the hang of it, but quite fun.
Yeah... I don't think I'll repeat stuff over and over. I mean, I do that with the DA and ME games, and other RPG's as well. But to do it for loot?? Not gonna happen. Still playing it through and do some exploring and such seems fun.

Welcome to the Bioware WTF Are You Doing club. I believe you'll enjoy the story and setting. Just remember that everything was scrambled together in 1 year and could have been SOOOO much better.

Although Bioware is mostly at fault for Anthem's direction, I can't help but lay some blame on EA as well. EA has stated that we no longer want to play singleplayer games and we want live service multiplayer games. While this might be true for 90% of EA's idiotic playerbase (Battlefield nuts and FIFA players), this is the complete antithesis of what Bioware fans want. Bioware is not a good fit for EA's future plans and it completely sucks.
I don't think we will ever see another true singleplayer game from Bioware ever again.

I sort of disagree with the mindset that BioWare is “abandoning” the RPG genre. Back in 2012 some developers decided to try doing something different, though it’s now apparent they didn’t know what that should be. I know we tend to think of a monolithic “BioWare, the RPG Developer”, but it’s composed of people who have wide ranging interests and creative desires. It’s like a band that switches genres to explore new ideas, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. It also doesn’t mean that BioWare won’t make RPGs in the future.

It's very light on both, ( to the point that even Borderlands has better rpg mechanics/builds). I guess it's better than Destiny...that means something, right, right??

I hope they will. No one does RPG quite like they do. Not yet anyway. Though the devs who did Technomancer shows a lot of promise.

*Gasp* Don't say that out loud, or you know... write it! You're gonna jinx DA 4!

No it does not. I say that as someone who has 100%-ed repeatedly all the Dragon Age, Mass Effect, KOTOR and Jade Empire games, imperfect as they were. Yeah, only in the way you'd say the likes of battlefield has story.

They've already stated they're going the Anthem path as for game design (i.e. game as a service aaaaand... multiplayer). As for your OP, Anthem has a shortlived story, but they will add plenty of content later on. The real gold is in the characters of the story, and the characters in fort tarsis (as per "Bioware").

Yes.
