This all just reminds me I need to go and play DOS2 at last. It's been sitting in my library for a long time. I am a bit hesitant because DOS1 was fun until the final third and then became a bit of a slog so I never finished it.
Maybe I will check the BG1/2 enhanced editions while I am at it. Been itching to go back and create a dual axe wielding maniac.
I stopped DOS1 at the entrance of the final "dungeon". I some point I decided that I might just finish it, until I read some people claim it took them over an hour to kill the final boss. No thanks. So never finished either...twice (as I replayed the game and stopped at the same spot again). DOS2 I did finish and since then they reworked the last chapter as it was super buggy when I played it. I haven't retried the game since that big patch. Maybe I should. It wasn't as much of a slog, but there was a lots of puzzles in the last 3rd. The beginning of the game is amazing though. While speaking about DOS2, a Larian employee confirmed that BG3 will have a similar length (so 50 to 100 hours).

Interesting things. The first time I saw the screenshots I thought the UI looked like DOS2, but turns out it doesn't actually. Portraits aren't in the same place at all (for both party and in-combat list). The menu is in the same corner but totally different in appearance. There is a single hotbar in DOS2 not two rows like in BG3. The borders are different looking. The currently used character info is displayed differently. Only the map "pins" look similar really because they kept red losanges for enemies and blue for allies and how they display the currently targeted enemy info. BG3 UI looks more like POE2 now that I think about it. See BG3 vs DOS2. edit: Poor Swen

Seen the screens. Looks pretty nice. It does resemble a little bit DoS, but I think it's still different. And we're looking just pictures, we have no idea about the game. Camera is pretty far away, which I appreciate and it's the way I remember the original BG, although not 100% sure. DoS has the more "focused" camera around the characters, the maps are more condensed also. This one seems larger in scale.

Well, the stream seems to be going but I’m still standing in line outside, that’s disappointing (hug) There is only 10lots of minutes of live gameplay (because Swen died and had to restart), then 80 minutes of pie charts and Q&A... --- Ok for a pre-alpha, that intro video is awesome...also, hello body horror. There is more races than base 5e. Cool. We got pre-made characters like in DOS2 (and can make a custom one too). Larian sure loves their dragons... Early access in two months.

The game looks good to me, even with flavours of Dragon Age Origins with strong BG D&D roots and shiny graphics. I like. But the stream chat is brutal, I wonder if that level of derision is the common perspective?

But the stream chat is brutal, I wonder if that level of derision is the common perspective? I turned it off. I've been intentionally avoiding any sort of BG3 discussion anywhere other than here, because I know it's bound to be nonstop whining, whining, whining. Fans are the worst. Me, I'm loving it, though it's clearly still rough around the edges.

I didn't play the old ones, maybe I should. But I'm fine with getting DOS3 in a D&D setting. If Larian does turn-based best, maybe they should stick to it.

Thing is, the ruleset looks very little like D:OS2, and a fairly faithful adaptation of 5E D&D. And D&D, of course, is turn-based. Making this game RTwP just because RTS was popular in the 90s (talk about a paradigm shift) always seemed absurd to me.

Great job Larian!!!
- I like how stealth is implemented. I always take a stealthy with me to scout, disable traps and ambush the enemy - Turn-based combat is fine as long as it's not Divinity 2's round-robin (which it wasn't) - I saw Dragons. Hopefully they talk and have personalities and they're not there just to be mounts or beasts to be killed - Intro looks great and I'm looking forward to seeing the story unfold

I missed the end of the presentation (driving back home from work). So VOD for rewatch (start at 7 minutes in) I love that Larian doesn't really give a crap about "balance". Mage Hand that can shove and throw things. Awesome! Dipping weapons in fire, why not! Also, Jason Schreier and a few others saw a lot more of the game and wrote about it kotaku.com/13-things-you-should-know-about-the-excellent-looking-b-1841960076www.gamespot.com/articles/how-larian-studios-hopes-to-transcend-baldurs-gate/1100-6474167/www.eurogamer.net/articles/2020-02-27-larians-gorgeous-baldurs-gate-3-looks-to-be-a-game-of-groundbreaking-systemic-depthI turned it off. Well, that looked pretty good imo. It's beautiful looking, lots of dialogue options it seems. There's a 3rd person "closer" or classic isometric for further away camera. The new options they have like jumping and what not is pretty nice. The facial animations were super good too, it looks very realistic and charming. It's cool how they implemented the dice rolls here and there, in a gamey fashion, but present after all it's based on a tabletop. A lot of environmental gameplay too, which is nice to see.
This looks with a lot of replayability potential with all the classes, races, and backstories.

I compiled a list of available origins/companions, races, classes, and backgrounds seen in the presentation, for those interested. Keep in mind there'll be more on release. ORIGINS Lae'zel (githyanki fighter): Lae'zel is a consummate warrior, ferocious even by the standards of a githyanki creche. Faced with transforming into the very monster she's sworn to destroy, Lae'zel must prove herself worthy of rejoining her people - if they don't execute her first. Gale (human wizard): Gale has one ambition: to become the greatest wizard Faerun has ever known. Yet his thirst for magic led to disaster. A Netherese Destruction Orb beats in his chest, counting down to an explosion that can level a city. Gale is confident he'll overcome it, but time is not on his side. Shadowheart (half-elf cleric, Trickery domain): One of Shar's dark disciples, Shadowheart was sent on a suicide mission to steal an item of great power. While wrestling with her faith and a strange, untamed magic, Shadowheart has enemies on all sides - and a long-buried secret to uncover. Wyll (human warlock, Pact of the Fiend): Noble by birth, Wyll made his name as the heroic 'Blade of Frontiers'. He keeps his pact with a devil well-hidden, and is desperate to escape the hellish bargain - even if that means rescuing the seductive creature that made the deal. Astarion (high elf rogue): Astarion prowled the night as a vampire spawn for centuries, serving a sadistic master until he was snatched away. Now he can walk in the light, but can he leave his wicked path behind?
RACES tiefling, drow, human, githyanki, dwarf, elf, half-elf, half-drow, halfling
CLASSES wizard, cleric, fighter, ranger, rogue, warlock
BACKGROUNDS charlatan, criminal, entertainer, folk hero, noble, soldier, sage, urchin

This looks great! Sure, on the face of it it seems to be 'DOS3 with a D&D skin' but it's not like that isn't an excellent game concept.
However, I feel like Larian may have made a rod for their own backs by calling it Baldur's Gate 3. Maybe there are going to be more direct ties to the Bhaalspawn saga revealed later, but I'm not sure just sticking Minsc and Boo in the party is going to make it feel like a BG game. At the moment it doesn't seem to have any more in common with that series than Neverwinter Nights or Temple of Elemental Evil or Sword Coast Legends.

I guess I'm just too accustomed to the "my whole family was murdered by the main bad guy", "I was kicked out of my noble family and must redeem myself" and the classic "rags to riches" storys. I expected Shadowheart to be a Shar disciples just by the name though...which has a lots of implications considering Shar's status in 5e. This post on Resetera has images of the press kit (I think it's the press kit).

Really liked the dialogue cut scenes, yeah the facial animations were spot on and really help with immersion and connecting with the characters, it made them seem more real. The Shadowheart character stood out for me but then I am a natural cynic and generally like a more sardonic (glass half empty) character in any fictional story and setting.

Interesting, the official images with info about the game I linked mention 15 races, core manual has 9 but drow and half-drow are under elf and half-elf in the manual. That means 2 races are unknown maybe? It also mention 8 classes (with more to come). Core manual has 12 classes. I wonder which one is currently not implemented (they have wizard, cleric, fighter, ranger, rogue, warlock. that leaves barbarian, monk, paladin, sorcerer, bard and druid). Also, Intellect Devourer are CR 2 aka meant for a full party (4 characters) all at level 2. Having 3 of them against two players for the tutorial is a bit insane. Going by the press kit images the plot of the game is about a complot from the Dead Tree: God of Murder (Bhaal), Tyranny (Bane) and Death (Myrkul). Also a cult called the Cult of the Absolute (which might be the cult related to Mind Flayers that was an abandoned plot line in BGII).
