The thing I didn't like in this trailer was Cavil's acting, it seemed to theatrical for some reason. They also didn't give him "cat eyes", but I guess it may have been to hard to do with their budget. Wow. If a par of contacts for Cavil would blow their budget then clearly Netflix isn't too excited about the franchise after all. I'm not an expert, but it seems that he is wearing contacts, it's just they don't make his pupils look cat-like. I guess if they did, he wouldn't be able to see.

He'd retract his pupils when in daylight, and expand them in the dark. I could be wrong but that would make sense. The games just went with cat eyes because it looks cool, but I think it also makes him seem less human so I'm not surprised to see the series go with regular pupils.

I thought that was only when taking specific potions in the books, granted it’s been awhile. Nah, that's an adjustment the games made. For Book Geralt it's an inherent property of his eyes. And he deflects Yen's question about whether or not it's voluntary, if memory serves. Don't remember what was specifically written, but I've always been under the impression that his pupils were normal most of the time and retracted into slits in bright light. Cats' exceptional night vision comes from the extra photoreceptor rods in their retina, it has nothing to do with their pupil shape, so I don't see the particular advantage to having slitted eyes under normal or dark lighting conditions. If witchers really have cat eyes then that explains why they mostly stick to melee combat, though. They're all nearsighted.

I will start reading the first book soon-ish, couple of months maybe. Finally got my hands on it, was tricky to find around these parts. I'm not sure if I should wait though, due to the "book reader syndrome" AKA book is one thing, show is another thing (or games...). And the show starting in december, I dunno. Truth be told, last trailer kinda sold it to me to the point that I'm actually interested now instead of being outright dismissive. Outside obvious things, I'm willing to give it a go now. Maybe it'll be trash, or maybe not.

Truth be told, last trailer kinda sold it to me to the point that I'm actually interested now instead of being outright dismissive. Outside obvious things, I'm willing to give it a go now. Maybe it'll be trash, or maybe not. You're right, then. Wait. If you're actually excited for the show and insistent on wanting to enjoy it then save the books for after. Otherwise there's really no way you won't be disappointed. Personally I'm inclined to just skip it. Might give the first few minutes a looksie to see if it's as boring as the trailers look, but I don't think I'll watch it. It's a mystery to me how producers don't seem to realize that the reason they've heard about a book or video game franchise at all is probably because it's some of the greatest of all time, and trying to adapt it into mediocre television, movies or games isn't going to appeal to anyone. Or maybe they just think fantasy geeks are going to be happy to pay as long as there's swords and boobs. Ugh. I know I'm being a bit too cynical and pessimistic about the whole thing, but it's just so disheartening to see people spend fortunes to produce lazy garbage. It's like a grouchy cantina lady spending her days pushing overpriced shit food on people too hungry to put up too much of a fight. It might not impact her salary, but it's definitely taking a toll on her... humanity, soul, whatever. The whole damn point is to be and contribute something to the world that you can honestly pride yourself on.

Henry Cavill looks too soft and pretty to be Geralt. I don't like the casting at all. The special effects look terrible as well.
Pass.

wickedcool Can you post a link to the article? I can't find it. But anyway, spider with a human head might be the show's take on kikimora or simply some half assed magic experiment/curse. One way of another, it's not out of place in the Witcherverse.

Read a blurb about the show's setting....apparently it has Geralt meeting Yennefer while she is still a trainee at Aretuza?? Uh, that would be kinda weird given they are both about the same age in the books (90-ish) but if she's still in training than she's probably not much older than Ciri.

We've had Polish adaptations before ( a horrible TV show and three incredible video games), so I don't think anything is lost if this show ends up being awful. I dont remember it being 'horrible'. Many people were frustrated that it deviated from the books but I've never been bothered by this. Also it understandably lacked in visuals (costumes, decorations and stuff) and fight choreography sometimes. Plot is essentially stories of first two books, acting was okay and I quite liked its cast and soundtrack. Movie on the other hand was a mess. It will be interesting to compare these two series.

When was the last time you saw it? It's better than the movie for sure, but still really bad and IMO only soundtrack holds up. Uh, that would be kinda weird given they are both about the same age in the books (90-ish) but if she's still in training than she's probably not much older than Ciri. That's what I've found " In the interview Andrzej Sapkowski stated that in the third book of the series (Baptism of Fire) Geralt is between 50 and 60. He looks about 30. When sorcerers are talking between them it is being reaveled that Yennefer is in her 90ties and Geralt is significantly younger than she is."

Netflix released introduction vids for Geralt and Yennefer: Alright, that must be kikimora. The same beast appeared in the first trailer, it should be in the episode based on Lesser Evil short story.

You know, there are some people complain about Netflix taking away the 'slavicness' of Witcher by hiring non-slavic looking people like Anya Chalotra, yet no one seem to be bothered that all these slavic mythological creatures are reduced to your typical Hollywood monsters.

I need to see more of the monster designs before I can comment on them. It's unlikely they'll get as creative as the games have.
I actually like what I'm seeing here.

It would be easier to say what I didn't find bad about it and that would be the sountrack an Żebrowski's acting. Other than that, you have some weird deviations from the source material like making Vesemir a monk/priest, making a whole episode about repressing witchers sexuality, equipping Geralt with a katana instead of a European sword, choosing aikido as Geralt's unarmed fight style (the most boring martial art possible which doesn't suit the setting at all), terrible direction and acting in every scene with multiple actors (usually one person is talking or giving an exalted theatrical speech while everyone else is just standing there), monsters made made so poorly that they wouldn't make it into Ed Wood films, etc.
It was bad all around.

Some people prefer movies to follow books they are based on to the letter, I dont think its necessary. Its an interpretation, adaptation of source material or artistic vision, call it however you like. It doesnt make movie automatically bad. terrible direction and acting in every scene with multiple actors (usually one person is talking or giving an exalted theatrical speech while everyone else is just standing there) I think I'll consiede this pont Its been a while since I watched it. Though I have to say quality of acting is quite subjective thing. monsters made made so poorly that they wouldn't make it into Ed Wood films I said the same thing. But you can't really expect early 2000's Polish TV-series to have special effects on par with Hollywood. You don't call Half-Life a bad game because it doesn't have 4k resolutiom, do you?

Looking really good now I have to say! If only I could disconnect my brain from the games and not be bothered by the actors not looking and sounding like their W3 counterparts... I have this annoying aversion to characters looking different from their first incarnation because the first one will always be the "correct" one in my head. Ugh. I dislike all Batman movies after the Burton ones. I actually don't like how Triss looks in W3 because she looked better in W2. I didn't even like the commander in Babylon 5 getting replaced after the first season. And that was even a DIFFERENT character. But still I prefer the first one. UGH.
I'll TRY to be open-minded about the Netflix adaptation and enjoy it... If the writing and acting is really good, maaaybe I can block out that the actors look "wrong"...

He was in the Tudors where he played Charles Brandon. I really liked him in that role but hadn't seen him anywhere else since then (I've never liked Superman). I like how enthusiastic he's about Witcher and playing Geralt. Makes me believe this new series might actually be good. Not sure how to feel about Yen's and Triss' casting though... is it black washing?
