I already knew of Dragon Age by the time I finished the Mass Effect trilogy, but it wasn't until the first Inquisition gameplay was released that I decided, "yep, I need to try this one".
That's right bois, a demo with plenty of features that didn't show up in the final game is what got me to try Dragon Age, starting with Origins, and I have yet to regret placing my faith on these demos.

I got into Dragon Age without knowing anything about the game. I was buying a Playstation 3 and needed some games to go with it so I picked up Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion (my first ES game) and Dragon Age: Origins. At first, I wasn't sure if I liked Dragon Age but then I slowly got into it and then loved it.

Other. My children pre-ordered it for me as a Christmas gift. That's all it took; it lead me to multiple playthroughs, two platforms, the books, modding (mostly using), reading fanfic and then creating fanfic. Oh, and the forums, of course. Sometimes I think they regret their choice .

Fond of such genres. My husband back there introduced me NWN, which I really became fond of (before that I played "Stronghold" very often. Still play.) After that game decided to look for other games of BW, stumbled upon DA and ME games. Started from DAO: fell in love right from the start - genre, characters, plot, combat, surrounding, so many options and outcomes - just everything I needed from the game. Then came DA2 - also my favorite as DAO; and DAI...the last one spoiled many things, still playable but not the best for sure.
Can't choose one thing, it's a combination of many things, attractive dark- grey outcomes, different characters, another universe, different origins where you can come back to your "home", surprising actions, inconvenient dialogues all of a sudden and many other things. Such games can't be described in 2-3 sentences.

1) I'm going to say it being RPG was the biggest deal because when I wanted to find a new game the first step was to put top 10 RPG into google search bar, but it had many factors. 2) When the list is recommended, the next top thing is the visual. If it doesn't look good, there is no selling it to me. 3) This is actually rare because usually I don't care about popularity, but in this case it did prompt me to buy it as well. The game already had DAI come out when I searched for it and I had randomly heard A LOT of good comments about DAO. 4) I also had taken a look at the negative comments and reviews and nothing triggered my no way flag. This isn't a step I like, but with the modern games it's simply a necessity to take a look at the criticism. 5) Once the game was bought and installed, Duncan buttbooting darkspawn and the exciting intro itself with everyone heroically running to save one thing or another was my YES YES YES JACKPOT! *hog game* MINE! Not returning it to the store. :3 6) The first hour of gameplay: npcs don't give confusing instructions, doesn't crash/bug, there isn't anything that makes my eye twitch. It is a tall order and RPG is my fav genre by far, but ya know a fine example upcoming -> You appear out of nothingness and behold a bright yellow dot of promise glowing above a guy several feet in front of you. You rush towards it all excited! Guy: Welcome to your first epic quest, adventurer. You must bring me five rocks. You: Oook, I presume they're somewhere on the ground nearby? You run around for five minutes and can't find a single rock. You: ... maybe they're labelled on the map? At this point a 'helpful' game tutorial prompts you: In order to helpfully help you locate things, we highlight them on the map. Turn on the map to guide you through the lands of Noobaria! You: err... Press M, I guess? Since M is for map in many games? M doesn't do anything. You: It would be helpful to tell me HOW TO TURN ON THE MAP, as in which button to press to activate it, instead of just telling to me turn on the map! Finally after searching the menus, and only due to the years of gaming experience, you find a way to activate the map only to discover that rocks are located to your left, but behind a garden wall. You cannot jump over this wall and locating the exit proves rather difficult due to the numerous bushes and garden paths. Eventually you get stuck in the terrain and can't get unstuck, so you probably need to reload the game. You: Where is the UNINSTALL button? So, yup, I did pick Dragon Age because it is RPG, but there are lots of factors contributing as to whether I'll play it or not.

Disclaimer: I've never been much of a fan of the fantasy genre.
I first entered the Dragon Age series with Inquisition, after loving the Mass Effect trilogy in spite of its flaws and hearing good things about the original DA. The main story line was very meh, but I did enjoy many of the characters and related side quests. I'm not very excited for the next game apart from the fact that it's a litmus test for Bioware.

Saw a bit on Jimmy Kimmel making fun of the sex scenes in Origins, and thought "Wow, that does look stupid, I should play that some time."
That was my introduction to Bioware in general.

What got me into Dragon Age were those sweet, sweet words "spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate".
Many of the people I talked with were excited for the same reason.

I honestly do not remember what made me pick up DA:O. Though I suspect it must've been that it looked a bit like Baldur's Gate at first glance. So I guess that's a combination of genre and Bioware. I think I got it on sale long after it was released though. Was a period of my life where I wasn't that into gaming, even though I have been gaming for most of my life. Would buy most of my games on sale and on a whim

Although the genre was a good part of it, I picked "other" because it wasn't just the fact that it was a fantasy RPG. What really caught my attention was the different origins in DAO. It wasn't that I was just starting at the same exact spot, just as a different race/gender - I got to explore that particular character's background, learn what helped shaped them, before jumping into the main game. I like getting into my character's head, and playing through the origins part first helped me play around and figure out their personalities and motives before having to start making game-altering decisions. Started the City-Elf origin, and fell in love with the game and eventually the series.

I bought DAO because SF4 was a boring game and my only PS3 game at the time. I wanted a new game, paid in in GameStop another game and had only to spend 2 Euro for DAO.

I had known BioWare since Bladur's Gate 1 and had an eye on DA:O for years before it came out but I played both Jade Empire and Mass Effect 1 in 2008. From that point on I was completely hyped for BW RPGs and followed the final months of DA:O development and marketing very closely. Needless to say I got the game the day it released. Haven't regretted it either.

Other than The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings (the books, not the movies), never really been into the fantasy genre … in fact, I didn't really know what the fantasy genre was … just never paid it any mind. So I was totally unaware of Dragon Age.
But I'm a sci-fi fan, picked up ME2 on a whim, discovered the series started with ME … picked it up on sale … really liked it … a lot. Had some game bugs and whatnot that I wanted to fix … stumbled onto the old BSN … mostly spent time in the bug reports section. Lurked in some of the discussion forums for ME. Read a lot, never posted anything for a while. Then made some smart-ass comments in a few threads … made a friend laugh. At that time, she needed a few laughs … so she egged me on.
Eventually … several months before the release of DAI, she pushed me to play DAO and DA2. Resistance was futile. I picked up DAO ultimate addition and DA2 from Amazon on the cheap. Did seven runs (one was a mistake) through DAO … a mix of classes, races and genders … to get the various origin stories … imported into DA2 … got it all done prior to DAI's release. Later, went back and did an eighth run … so I had a unique play through that eventually matched up with my second qunari.
I found the combat pretty clunky … except maybe DA2, but really enjoyed the stories. Later, got the hardbound editions of the various DA novels … would have been nice to read them at the appropriate time before/after playing the various games … to provide context and deeper understanding of the story.
Look forward to DA4, still undecided on the pending short stories … though will probably end up getting them, when DA4 is closer to release. Still not a big fantasy fan … will probably always be more attuned to the sci-fi genre, but I have genuinely enjoyed the DA story so far … kudos to BioWare for creating something outside my normal areas of interest that I found so enjoyable.

Military Scifi (David Weber) are recent reads including alternate history books of John Birmingham. Also a sucker for political dramas from Tom Clancy.
I've read all the classics (Homer, Verne, Wells), hard core sci-fi is my main interest but I also like the fantasy genre. The Mars, Venus and Tarzan series by Bourroughs come to mind. Interesting how the writing styles changed over the years.
Neutral about DA4, mainly due to the fact I don't recognize Bio anymore. EA is pushing rear end monetization and to me it means goodbye to the old aRPGs style I love.

I first had played Mass Effect. Thought that was the bomb. So when I saw that it was by Bioware I wanted to give Dragon Age Origins a go, and I love the medieval and fantasy setting. It was a huge escape from every day life of bullying etc. so I made the person who I admired and wanted to be when I played the game.
Also; loved the lore and depth

The first reason why bought DAO was because I needed something to fill the time between ME1 and ME2. Also the Blood Dragon Armor for both DAO and ME2 didn't hurt either.
The second reason having played Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate 2, KOTOR1, Jade Empire, and ME1 all more times than I can remember and having so much fun playing those games (I literately burned out my first copy of KOTOR1 from playing it so much on my OG Xbox) so I figured: "What the hell? If I don't like I take to Gamestop and trade it in for something else" and guess what? That didn't happened and I fell in love with another BioWare series.

I forgot how I heard about the game but I think it was on a gaming forum.
It had many character creation possibilities, great characters, great lore, and deep cinematic storytelling.
I had to play it.

I had already seen previews/snippets of info on DAO and thought it seemed decent enough, but hadn't looked into it much. The clincher came quite close to release - I had been looking for an RPG to play across Christmas and winter after I'd spent the previous one with Fallout 3, and then found that 'cool looking fantasy game I thought looked decent' was in fact by Bioware. It being by the makers of KOTOR and Mass Effect was a big decider for me.

I had a friend point me to the demo of Dragon Age 2. I played the demo, and that was enough to hook me in. I actually played 2 before ever getting Origins, and admittedly 2 is still my favorite, but I’ve enjoyed all of them so far. To be honest, I feel like Inquisition is the weakest one for me. I liked Hawke’s story, particularly sarcastic Hawke, but all of the different origin-stories in Origins were a delight. I found it more challenging to assume the role of the inquisitor for some reason. I’m still totally looking forward to Dragon Age 4, whatever it might be.

I was a filthy console peasant and not a player of RPGs. Friends told me I had to play DAO. So, I bought a copy and proceeded to not play it until I was stuck in the house for an extended period. Then I played the hell out of it. Moved on to PC gaming and discovered the wonderful world of mods. I've been hanging around like a barnacle ever since.

I started playing Dragon Age Origins when I was in high school. It's the first western RPG I played. I was only familiar with JRPGs. I just randomly picked up DAO and decided that I would be fun. One of the best decisions ever! That's how I got entangled in this lifelong hobby.
