And for all that BioWare likes to say that adapting for older consoles meant drastic cutting of advertised features, I have yet to see ANYTHING from ANY GAME on my current black box that the previous black box could not have done adequately, even if it wouldn't have looked as nice. As you say, Tresspasser was current gen only, and it didn't bring anything new to the table in terms of gameplay, nor was it particularly amazing to look at. It's more to do with memory limitations on said console. Continuously adding more content to the game means it's taking up more space that the console has to process. Bungie had to the same thing with Destiny 1 where that games final DLC, Rise of Iron, was only available to current-gen players. Even now with Destiny 2, they've had to admit that they need to remove content on a seasonal basis to keep the game going.

I'll be 60, and possibly still crying, before I can enjoy DA4 Haven't you heard? 60 is the new 40. As for the topic, it seems like the time between releases is increasing, which IIRC is the opposite of what EA wanted a few years back. (Once again, I regret DA2 not being viewed as a success.) Nevertheless, here we are. I'd be happier if Anthem had been in a genre I like, but they'd the breaks.

Looks like a result of the entire game being rebooted. Now I question why the game was revealed so early. To be fair, it's not like they're the only studio that's released a trailer for a game that didn't surface until several years later. Case in point: Cyberpunk 2077. First trailer came out in 2013, and the game won't launch until nearly 7 years after said trailer. As for BioWare, I can only guess that they did so because (a) they thought they could meet a launch window close to fall 2021, (b they wanted to let the fanbase know they were still working on the next DA game, or (c) it was meant to assuage fears from BioWare's single-player RPG focused crowd that Anthem wasn't going to signal a turning point for the studio.

Optimism, folks. Not we party.
A bit. They got plenty of time. That's one of the requirements for something great.
Some of you will be pessimistic. But come on, let's not kill the hopes yet, shall we.

Shattered Steel - 1996 Baldur's Gate - 1998 MDK2 - 2000 Baldur's Gate II - 2000 Neverwinter Nights - 2002 KOTOR - 2003 Jade Empire - 2005 Mass Effect - 2007 Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood - 2008 DA: Origins - 2009 ME 2 - 2010 DA: 2 - 2011 SWTOR - 2011 ME: 3 - 2012 DA: I - 2014 ME: A - 2017 Anthem - 2019 DA: 4 - 2022? In terms of time between Bioware's game it is about right. Longest gap is between DA: I and ME:A and gap between Anthem and DA:4 will be that if it comes out Fall 2022. However, in terms of franchise gap it will be 8 years between DA games (assuming 2022 release). Bioware's has a 2-3 year gap between sequels, with the only exception being the 5 years between ME:3 and ME:A. (Not counting Star Wars since KOTOR and SWTOR are different genres completely) Interested to see how they handle this since more time to make the game seems like it would be good but we all saw what happened when Bioware was given a ton of time to do ME: A and even more to do Anthem. No. From Shattered Steel to ME3 1.3 years of intervals on average. After that 2.6 years on average. Double development time, with questionable quality.

Well, one can only hope that other companies are going to fill the void Bioware has left after the release of DA:I (which I think was a success and a great game, others will disagree and say the company died after DA:O) in terms of singleplayer RPGs. And that does seem to be the case, so bye bye Bioware.

Eight years is a long time. They ended ME, and after time decided to reboot as pretty much a new IP, and that still didn't take 8 years. This is assuming DA4 doesn't come out early 2023. The problems with Andromeda and Anthem were pretty much because they decided to change course one or more times during development.
This news does nothing to increase my confidence in the management team or prospects for the game.

I have a question concerning this tweet. How likely is it that a game like DA would appear so much in advance in EA's earning report? I see they talk of other games to be announced closer to release. Could that be a glimmer of hope that they simply didn't want the game announced in that way when Bioware hasn't done so yet?

Sounds about right as the earliest possible date. A little trouble here and there, some rework and an extension and we are looking at a possible release for the 10 year DAI anniversary I so hope not. Although there is a good chance for 2023 too.

The teaser of last year looks more and more like a power move from BioWare/Hudson to put DA4 on the map, so that EA wouldn’t get any weird idea of canceling the project due to the Anthem’s reaction that it was going to come later.
As for developing on next gen only, while it might not necessarily give us anything new in terms of features, it helps the devs in not being forced to work on a lot of platforms with different specs. And we do know that features were cut from DAI due to old gen. So the release being in 2022 is certainly good news on that front.

"We typically don't give multiyear guidance this early in the year, I don't want to start giving '23 guidance now that I've started a hint on '22. But you should assume it's out there and plans are underway."

A bit. They got plenty of time. That's one of the requirements for something great. According to that logic Anthem should have been the best Bioware game ever. Long development time can be the result of - or can lead to indecisiveness, infighting, procrastination, issues with the engine, bad planning or plain old lack of inspiration. IMO development time is no indicator of quality whatsoever - unless we're talking about rushing hard. A long development time is probably better than rushing, but that's about it.

well, they started development this month, so 2.5-3 years of development. add that to the 2 years of pre-development. both makes sense and sounds promising. i will wait as long as needed and i am confident bioware will give us the dragon age game we and the franchise deserve.

No game is worth waiting that long for. More Dev time means nothing on its own. It can be good but it can also mean a lack of direction, changing minds, changing priorities, and other problems. Don't be surprised if the game releases and you see all kinds of "they took 8 years to make THIS?" responses.
