I think it's become pretty apparent to must of us here by now that DA4 is scheduled for a late 2022/early 2023 release date; confirmed by EA CEO Andrew Wilson. Given Casey Hudson's recent blog post mentioning that the next Dragon Age game was still in pre-production, this launch window makes sense given the work that is still needed to get it into launch form. While some took this news with optimism, over prospects of the game having more time to fully finish, others here have expressed disappointment, as they feel it's undeserved given the Trespasser DLC cliffhanger.
There's widely different viewpoints on this forum, so I figured I'd try and gauge were everyone's at overall. I didn't attach any descriptions to the emotions I listed as options, because one person feeling the same emotion as another person may be due to different reasons. For example, someone may be happy that DA4 is being launched years away because they feel it will give the devs more time to flesh out the game. Another person may be happy the game is launching so far away because it'll give them time to play other games. One person may be indifferent to the launch window because when the day comes when it releases, they'll decide to try it then. Another person may be indifferent because they have no faith in the next game whatsoever.

I'm happy to hear about it.
Yeah, they have more time to flesh out the game mechanics and story. It may prove to be a double-edged sword, but as I've said, we can't take it as a certainty that it'll go down the path of Anthem.
So... I can wait.

Sorry but I'm disappointed they had a lot of time to produce DA4 but waisted it on a new and failed IPO aka Anthem whose fault that is? well being an old schooler I would place the blame on management, Anthem makes no sense at the time it was released or developed (my opinion) way too many looter shooters where out there if your going to try something new have a small team work it and have the bulk of your crew stick to what works best.

Doesn't bother me. I got other things that I can do without worrying about when the next DA game will be released.

I'm equally baffled and disappointed. The baffled part is because I can't see how the increasing length of time between releases works for anyone. (I'm still sad that DA2 discredited the "faster and cheaper" alternative approach.)

Overall I am indifferent. There is always going to be some disappointment that the game won't be here sooner, but I rather see a game have a longer development cycle and not become a "we are obligated to release by this date" type of game which I believe led to a bunch of issues I had with Andromeda. It just echos the opinion I had when Andromeda was released as well where I think the game should have been delayed longer to iron out the kinks that were still in the game so this is just an early delay.

(I'm still sad that DA2 discredited the "faster and cheaper" alternative approach.) I don't think anyone wants this situation to happen or be the one that is going on. Ideally we'd be getting one of these games as often as we get a Marvel movie. BioWare would release Andromeda sequels in the Spring, Anthem sequel in the Summer, and DA sequels in the Winter. lol. But it is the one we are dealt with. These games tends to take three years at the minimum to develop. This seems to be the case pretty much industry wise with the exception of sports titles and really weird indie games. And BioWare is just one studio with at least three active franchises and an active interest in Star Wars (TOR is still running, maybe a new game is in pre pod?). They tried to do the multiple studio thing working on multiple games...but then that studio was absorbed into another...and Austin seems to be pretty much for TOR and support. So, all else being equal, that leaves a 9 year development cycle as long as their current situation persists. Now of course this situation could easily change in different ways but for the moment...this is it. Now the best thing to do would be to either higher more people or to drop some of their current responsibilities. As far as DA 2 is concerned...as much as you or I might like it I really think it could have benefitted from more development time, not less. Probably about double the development time...especially in order to give it the scope of some of the ideas I have heard mentioned around here. It really wasn't that much smaller then DA O or the MET games it simply needed more polish and more fleshing out...which it did not get.

I think BioWare has two teams in BioWare Edmonton and probably only made a new studio in Montreal for the tax breaks for they were working on Inquisition and Anthem followed by Anthem and pre-production for DA4. Now that BioWare is in a new building in Edmonton they could add another team there if needed. I do agree with what you are saying overall, we would all like a faster release schedule, but sometimes a faster release schedule can also be problems for corners get cut.

It is what I'm hoping...almost as long as I have been a Bio fan I have been expecting them to do a game a year release cycle over a three year period of time. It makes sense...but they haven't been able to do it. Maybe by the time DA 4 comes out they can get that going. Of course live service stuff may complicate this.

It makes sense...but they haven't been able to do it. Maybe by the time DA 4 comes out they can get that going. Of course live service stuff may complicate this. That is what I was thinking when they first announced Anthem, a new BioWare game every 12 to 18 months. I wouldn't mind a longer drought if they could continue support post release for it sounds like EA is releasing more content for Battlefield V while also delaying the next game for a year. So if they could take that approach I wouldn't mind either. It really depends on what EA is planning for Live Services with BioWare games, for EA claims they have had Live Services for over a decade in their last investors call and that would mean they pre-date Dead Space 3. I am not sure if it will happen with Dragon Age 4, for I think Anthem is going to be a minor product for BioWare in the way The Old Republic works. Unless it did better then it appears and articles online give it credit for. Maybe BioWare will be able to get back into a two year release schedule with Dragon Age 4 if they are able to get a new Mass Effect game going the way they want. Edit: I think also the cancellation of all DLC for Mass Effect: Andromeda have also made the window feel larger then normal.

In light of where we are now... put me down as optimistic. I am glad to see they're getting a decent amount of time to work on this, and hopefully (fingers crossed) the production environment will have improved for the devs. I'm also hoping that with the previous games behind them they have much better idea of what the Frostbite engine is capable of doing, and not get hung up on idea(s) that are just not feasible with it. There's a lot of good games to keep me busy in the meanwhile, and while I'm not "happy" to wait 3 more years, and my expectations are tempered, I'm hopeful we'll get a good game in the end.

There's a lot of good games to keep me busy in the meanwhile, and while I'm not "happy" to wait 3 more years, and my expectations are tempered, I'm hopeful we'll get a good game in the end. The thing about improving the production environment is that what BioWare does is pretty standard for BioWare I know people thought it was new back when the article was released, but I remember back with Jade Empire when the developers were talking about taking breaks because they were working a lot of long hours just prior to launch. Even AskAGameDev commented that BioWare was known by other developers for years to have a crunch cycle before launch and it was just made longer because of delaying the game. So if its that ingrained into BioWare's culture its not going to change overnight. I think any rookie to game development is going to have that moment when they first hit crunch and realize what is expected of them and its an industry wide problem its just going to take a lot of small steps to get better. On the other hand I have had to work plenty of overtime for a major project myself in the past for months so I doubt its ever going to go away completely. Personally the easiest and quickest improvement I see for BioWare is if they don't delay their games because they have enough time to make it without having to result to a delay and therefore attach more crunch to the schedule.

Indifferent.
The aim to release DA4 in 2022 is about what I guessed (possibly plus some delay which sometimes just can't be avoided), so I'm not surprised at all, and frankly, I feel that the quality of BioWare's games has declined over their last few releases. I'm also no longer as interested in the Dragon Age setting as I used to be. Not having to rush a game is always a good thing, but then again, Anthem had 6+ years of time for all the good that did. Heck, without it we might be speculating about the release of DA5 right now.
So, at some point BioWare will finally release another Dragon Age game, one which was rebooted to include more live service according to EA's wishes.
Pros: Could be good! Cons: Might not be.
We'll see. Until then, there will be many other games to play.

Indifferent for me as well. The game will be released when it will be released. It's gonna be good or it's gonna suck. In general, I think it is always good if devs have more time to make the game.
I will definitely keep an eye on it, but not get obsessed about it. At the moment, I'll focus on VtMB2 and BG3.

I'm disappointed because of the recent teaser trailer. What was the point if the release date is so far away? It built up expectations of a more recent release, only for them to be dashed. Clearly, the comic series and Tevinter Nights are no longer preparing us for an imminent release but trying to maintain interest in a still distant product. For me the next game will not be a sequel but simply a new game by a developer I have enjoyed in the past. Whether I rush out and buy it or wait for feedback from others will probably depend on what other projects I am involved in at the time. If it isn't a single player game or requires signing up to some sort of subscription service, then I just won't bother.
With regard to Trespasser, it would seem the writing team (and management) still thought of it in terms of tying off the Inquisitor's story, so a prolonged development of the next game wouldn't matter, rather than as many people saw it, an extended trailer setting up the next game with an expectation of the Inquisitor (no longer called that) still involved in the story in a significant way.

Pessimistic because despite the ridiculous development time DA4 can still underwhelm. They should be able to meet or exceed TW3 level of excellence however I no longer have faith Bioware is capable of delivering that level of quality.

I was thinking that had they not ditched all their initial work on DA4 after around 2-3 years development time then they might well have been able to release it for the 10th anniversary of DAO,, which would have been a great marketing hook. As it is if they do release it in Fall 2022 then it will be around the 13th anniversary of DAO. Let's hope that's not an ominous sign.

Disappointed in general in Bioware. 8 years MINIMUM only because they had to make that Desitiny clone trainwreck. The Mass Effect team should have done Anthem and the DA should be releasing DA4 RIGHT NOW. Instead they pooled all their resources into saving two trainwrecks.
This is unfortunate. So I can't really be angry because they've been in damage control for years now. Trying to keep the company alive. But I'm just disappointed that Bioware is limping along like this and that we'll probably never get a satisfying conclusion to Dragon Age if DA4 isn't even the last game. Unfinished storylines is something that REALLY annoys me. I don't care about another Mass Effect game anymore. Shepard is done and I don't care about Andromeda. So there is no emotional investment left without pay-off for me. (Gosh would it suck if I did...) But Dragon Age I've been invested in for a long time now. I honestly don't see Bioware keeping themselves afloat until DA5. So yeah, I'm disappointed about DA4 but mostly sad and almost indifferent about Bioware at this point. And by 2022 I'll probably be indifferent about DA4 too.

Mixed. I'm happy that the game will not be rushed out-I thought of a 2021 date release- sad that I'll have to wait st least one year more than I thought for it.
And even if I'm more on the positive side and I have faith in the DA team, I'm still in the "wait and see" department.

I’m disappointed that I’ll have to wait that long for DA4
I’m hopeful, however, that the long wait will assure a higher quality product with less production stress for the developers
