This should get it's own thread...seems important:
"Anthem Update
blog.bioware.com/2020/02/10/anthem-update-february-10/
Hey everyone!
One year ago, we were preparing to launch Anthem – a game that represented a big leap into new territory for us as a studio. It was an exhilarating and terrifying experience to go out to the world with something new and different, and we are grateful to all the players who have come along with us on the journey. It has been a thrill for us to see the creativity of our players in designing customized Javelins, and watching them master Anthem’s flying and fighting gameplay. I am so proud of the work the team has put into this game, and at the same time there’s so much more that we – and you – would have wanted from it.
Over the last year, the team has worked hard to improve stability, performance and general quality of life while delivering three seasons of new content and features. We have also heard your feedback that Anthem needs a more satisfying loot experience, better long-term progression and a more fulfilling end game. So we recognize that there’s still more fundamental work to be done to bring out the full potential of the experience, and it will require a more substantial reinvention than an update or expansion. Over the coming months we will be focusing on a longer-term redesign of the experience, specifically working to reinvent the core gameplay loop with clear goals, motivating challenges and progression with meaningful rewards – while preserving the fun of flying and fighting in a vast science-fantasy setting. And to do that properly we’ll be doing something we’d like to have done more of the first time around – giving a focused team the time to test and iterate, focusing on gameplay first.
In the meantime, we will continue to run the current version of Anthem, but move away from full seasons as the team works towards the future of Anthem. We’ll keep the game going with events, store refreshes, and revisiting past seasonal and cataclysm content – starting with our anniversary towards the end of the month.
Creating new worlds is central to our studio mission, but it’s not easy. Sometimes we get it right, sometimes we miss. What keeps us going is the support from players like you. Your feedback gives us guidance on how we can improve, and your passion inspires us with the courage to create. I look forward to working together with your involvement and feedback towards the best possible future for Anthem.
Casey"

We knew from Kotaku ~3 months ago there was a significant revamp in the works, so I was a little surprised they waited this long to make an official announcement. How do I feel about this...? I'm torn. On the one hand, this feels like it has Sunk Cost written all over it. And given everything I've seen, the odds of it turning it around are... low.On the other, I want them to say "Screw you Hrungr, game on!" ... and actually prove. me. wrong. Even though Anthem is not really my jam, I am curious to see what the'll come up with... and when. A significant revamp is gonna take time, and $$$.

The way I see it is they have all the numbers we don't - cost to develop and market, gross sales figures (including Origin PC sales which is not reported to NPD) for the game, engagement numbers, money generated through the store - so, if EA saw it as a failed endeavor, I don't think they'd have an issue dropping it. They obviously see something there despite it's rough initial reception.

Bioware has no other choice. If they give up on Anthem, this would be the 2nd consecutive game they have done that to after poor post launch receptions. They need to go into DA4 with positive PR and what better way than a No Mans Sky style "comeback" story?
Or they can go into DA4 with the reputation that their last 2 game essentially failed.
While I have no interest in Anthem, I hope it works out for the best.

Well. Bioware made the best decision they could've done given the circumstances.
Now all that's left to do is wait and see how it turns out.
Haven't paid much attention to the devs currently working on the game so far, but I think the leadership problems with the first iteration, at the very least, won't be as prominent as they were back during the original development period.

Really good news imo What it sounds like to me is that they're taking a page from FFXIV's book and redesigning the game while continuing the current version at the same time. It obviously won't be as extensive a rework as FFXIV but it had to be done. We'll see what they come up with Hopefully they'll have an actual in game chat ...

Do they have to "reinvent" the gameplay loop to fix Anthem? Anthem needs much better loot, more story content and more biomes. I guess the loot part can't be fixed without messing with... everything gameplay-related? That's just weird to me.

They mentioned they're preserving the fun of flying and fighting, so to me those two aspects are not being redesigned. Which means they won't be messing with everything gameplay related. We'll see what they come up with

So how does this effect existing Anthem owners? Not that I've played the game in months, but they're not implying what I think they're implying? That I'm going to have to pay for the game twice?

I think they're just going to run a huge patch for Anthem owners. I wouldn't be surprised if they also re-released the game with the extra goodies once Anthem 2.0 releases.

With Final Fantasy 14 accounts with the "legacy status" get a cheaper subscription every month, a nice and cool mount, and a slightly different beginning. It's not all doom and gloom yet, Bioware could do something nifty

Re-inventing Anthem would mean making a different game. This is a colossal waste of resources.

Re-inventing Anthem would mean making a different game. This is a colossal waste of resources. Depends how successful it becomes afterward. The looter shooter market is lucrative if they can break in, science fantasy is under-represented in the market, and it'd take fewer resources to remake this game than to create a whole new one if they want to do something in the same vein.

And you're right, they're going to have numbers we haven't seen. But the player count dropped pretty quick after launch. So the question becomes, is the money (in the millions I'm sure) and effort being spent now going to pay dividends for them in the end? Again, I don't think so, but.. hoping they can prove me wrong. Getting the revamp out before all the big Fall launches will be important though.

A lot of you read a bit too much into this and mix it with the Kotaku rumor about Anthem 2.0 and "massive overhauls". I mean - great if it happens, but it's not even close to what Bioware is really saying.
I won't be spoiling your happy vibes here though and will translate this into the Skepticism thread.

Despite supporting ME:A with updates and patches for over 4 months after launch, the perception is BioWare "abandoned" it and were already predicting they'd do the same with Anthem so I think they really had to "double down" on it if they even had a glimmer of hope they'd turn it around.

Over the coming months we will be focusing on a longer-term redesign of the experience [...] Casey, do you honestly think you even have that much time? Lets keep it real here, not many of us even thought this game would make it to this point before the doors were closed. And yet, it still remains. Something tells me you don't just put a statement like that out without talking to the higher-ups at EA about what you're planning for the game.
