Lol, why are some people reacting to it like Anthem 1.0 is dead and they're going to almost completely overhaul the game? We've seen this before, more than a dozen times now and out of all games that went through a revamp, only FFXIV really went 2.0 - with other games surely changing significantly over the years, but in a more gradual fashion. My question is will there be one large update or a series of smaller updates. I assume they'll focus on smaller updates NOW and they'll be mostly focused on both preparing te code for some more major patches and fixing some underlying technical or gameplay issues. We'd get a large update at some point, but it'd not be the last one.

Yea, the reason people loved it is because it is extremely rare and difficult to pull off. I wouldn't put my money on Anthem becoming FFXIV. Er, lol - no, it isn't. At this point it's almost becoming standard practice to not fare good at launch and have resurrection some time later. People remember FFXIV, because it was so overt with the way it changed - what with the whole ending of old campaign and relaunching the title and so on. But neither Elder Scrolls Online, Diablo 3, The Division, Destiny, Rainbow Six Siege, Warframe, No Mans Sky, Sea Of Thieves (that is in the process of making a comeback) or effing WOW (I guess it's justified by passage of time to remember that it had a bad launch) have simply not turned the servers or old versions off, but changed more gradually over time, which is what they're planning to do with Anthem.

My question is will there be one large update or a series of smaller updates. Probably periodic updates spread out throughout the year. You'll probably see smaller, albeit influential patches, like updates to the UI, vendors, etc. Once the groundwork is laid down and they feel the game is stable enough, then theyll probably drop a massive update that influences reward progression, loot, the open world, and Fort Tarsis. I don't know if theyll have "new content" to bring along with that (I'm leaning towards 'no'), but if they did it would probably need to be substantial enough to attract new - and old - players.

Just a quick question, seeing as the title of the thread is "Incoming Soon"; how soon do you guys expect this to come? How long have I been saying this is the case? As far as the Anthem update goes, my guess is it'll be out sometime before the Fall. Otherwise, it'd just get drowned out from all the new releases with the console launches. Though I'm not sure this will push back DA4 from the (likely Fall) 2022 launch. When we got that news from the Quarterly Report, they were already working on the Anthem revamp (we knew that from the Kotaku article). Not to say it couldn't be delayed anyway (because... video games ), but I'm fairly certain they've factored Anthem into the equation. I'd love for it to come out by fall but my gut is saying it's likely a year away...who knows at this point. As for the Anthem revamp, yeah, this has been ongoing since likely mid-2019 and were only aware of it because of the Kotaku article. In regards to EA's comments around Dragon Age likely being a 2022 release, they would have already known the scale of what was estimated to "fix" Anthem and likely accounted for it in their projections. I highly doubt DA4 is a 2024 release. As for Anthem, I think one their main focuses, besides the much discussed loot and end game issues, will be finding ways to mitigate the load screens and load times for consoles that have the traditional hard disc drives. Obviously, it will be greatly helped by the new consoles having SSD but I'm sure they don't want to have such a huge disparity if they can help it.

No, they didn't. ESO launched in April 2014. Tamriel Unlimited update in June 2015 was when they've finally passed the largest hurdles, but things really began turning around after Morrowind expansion in 2016, 2 years after launch. It was a pretty stagnant period before Tamriel Unlimited and there was still A TON of work to do after that update. It's how I've found Bioware btw, since I was the person who played since launch and there was really not much else to do there at the time. So I know that the whole 'one year is when they must turn things around' is bunk. I mean, never mind that Bioware - and specifically Bioware Austin - already has experience in turning things around after more than a year. SWTOR didn't make over a billion dollar because they don't know how to do this.

This should get it's own thread...seems important: "Anthem Update blog.bioware.com/2020/02/10/anthem-update-february-10/ Hey everyone! One year ago, we were preparing to launch Anthem – a game that represented a big leap into new territory for us as a studio. It was an exhilarating and terrifying experience to go out to the world with something new and different, and we are grateful to all the players who have come along with us on the journey. It has been a thrill for us to see the creativity of our players in designing customized Javelins, and watching them master Anthem’s flying and fighting gameplay. I am so proud of the work the team has put into this game, and at the same time there’s so much more that we – and you – would have wanted from it. Over the last year, the team has worked hard to improve stability, performance and general quality of life while delivering three seasons of new content and features. We have also heard your feedback that Anthem needs a more satisfying loot experience, better long-term progression and a more fulfilling end game. So we recognize that there’s still more fundamental work to be done to bring out the full potential of the experience, and it will require a more substantial reinvention than an update or expansion. Over the coming months we will be focusing on a longer-term redesign of the experience, specifically working to reinvent the core gameplay loop with clear goals, motivating challenges and progression with meaningful rewards – while preserving the fun of flying and fighting in a vast science-fantasy setting. And to do that properly we’ll be doing something we’d like to have done more of the first time around – giving a focused team the time to test and iterate, focusing on gameplay first. In the meantime, we will continue to run the current version of Anthem, but move away from full seasons as the team works towards the future of Anthem. We’ll keep the game going with events, store refreshes, and revisiting past seasonal and cataclysm content – starting with our anniversary towards the end of the month. Creating new worlds is central to our studio mission, but it’s not easy. Sometimes we get it right, sometimes we miss. What keeps us going is the support from players like you. Your feedback gives us guidance on how we can improve, and your passion inspires us with the courage to create. I look forward to working together with your involvement and feedback towards the best possible future for Anthem. Casey" I spent an hour or so last night reading comments on Twitter and watching YT vids from content creators with their reaction. It was a mixed bag, which I expected, but I saw way too many comments praising BW for doing this. I have a lot of hours in the game and I still can't help but feel cheated with the way the release went a year ago. It really got to me once I read Jason's piece on all the issues between BW and EA and out of a 6 year dev cycle finding out they only spend 18 months to get to release and with little to no testing. Hell, those of us that have played the game tested it for them. It seems to be the norm these days with "live service" content and in no way should we continue to accept this as normal. I'm not confident Anthem 2.0 will bring anybody back and I'm not confident they will be able to pull off what they're cryptically saying they will. I'm hopeful they will but I'm not getting excited over this and I'm not letting BW and EA off the hook with taking my $60 and delivering what they did.

I think WoW is an exception in your examples - it's changed over time but for the worse

I bet that those successfully resurrected games had full dev studios working on them. Shouldn't Anthem's original dev team mostly be working on DA4 now?
But maybe we'll get a surprise and Austin's live service crew can pull off what Edmonton's A Team couldn't.

Nah, when they redid FFXIV for 2.0 the number of main development staff may have spiked a couple of hundred, two hundred to maintain the original game, but they were still working on many other games simultaneously. It most definitely wasn't the full studio It would be nice to have more devs working on it full time TBH Numbers are here - https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comments/6f76zy/the_ffxiv_dev_team_changes_over_time/

Maybe it's a competition to find junior directors?

Don't expect anything soon. It's just marketing barble. The loot problems have been known since launch. It's old news tried to be packed in a new wrapper.

As for WoW - it is also the oldest out of given examples, so it had time to grow, decline and even have its classic version back online I mean, as much as I wish Anthem success I don't think they're aiming for staying online with this game for over 15 years (although who knows what'll happen) - though I suspect that, if they succeed, they likely have quite a few years of expanding the game and the universe, thus making it one of classic Bioware franchises.

For myself, I really enjoyed the game for the most part and have put over 400+ hrs in over the past year. Its flaws are obvious, especially after spending that much time with it, but there are significant enough elements of it that are salvageable that attempting an "Anthem 2.0/Next" relaunch is at least conceptually workable.
Looking at the game from bird's-eye view, you can see a potentially cool CO-OP looter-shooter next to a potentially immersive, single player-focused RPG world but, in attempting to combine the two, they are more smushed together as opposed to elegantly entwined. With flying and combat, you can start to see the potential of the Javelins a unique third-person experience and how fun it is to combine you efforts with three other players with different powers to take different enemies. With the characters, lore, and animations, you get to scratch the service of a new, unexplored world rife with factions vying for control over what feels like a frontier outpost with all sides of opposition challenged by the ever-changing and mutating world they are trying to survive in.
I look at that and see potentially a traditional 40-50hr BioWare single player campaign where Dax, Brin, and Rythe (among others) comprise your party NPCs with whom you can travel in groups of 3 or 4 to take on missions while non-party NPCs like Tassyn, Matthius, Yarrow, and Vule can advocate for the different factions, fight off outlaws, Dominion and Scars, and investigate intrigue in Fort Tarsis.
From there, you can switch over to the multiplayer/CO-OP mode to complete daily, weekly and monthly challenges, complete seasonal objectives, build out your Javelin's loadout with loot-based weapons, gear and support materials while earning coin you can exchange for cool armor sets, vinyls, decals, etc.
Unfortunately, by trying to have them both feed into and influence each other neither is a satisfactory experience. If I had "dream" redesign, I'd lean into the "BioWare-esque RPG" side and make traversing Fort Tarsis third person perspective, make the conversations also third-person perspective with more conversation options, have the Javelins have an overt story behind them and their design and purpose as opposed to being triggered by leveling and it's story a simple codex entry, explain why you, personally, chose to be a Freelancer as opposed to a Sentinal or part of Corvis, give further back-history into the origins of the scars, give clearer objectives to the outlaws and give more faces to the Dominion (further agency beyond "enemy"), let us flirt with Tassyn or Maxine, the bar owner, or Brin...
Maybe it defeats the purpose of what they were attempting...maybe they were unsure what they were attempting...but maybe it would align closer to an audiences expectations.
Casey started this ball rolling in 2012 shortly after ME3's release and was part of it's initial conceptual phase before leaving 2 years later in 8/2014. I wonder if him coming back to "Anthem" three years later was reminiscent of that Donald Glover gif of him to returning with pizzas and everything is on fire. Obviously, getting the game out was priority one and getting BioWare vets like Mark Darrah and Mike Gamble on board in late 2017/early 2018 was likely in aid of that. Now? Casey is the face of "Anthem" once again...I'm genuinely curious where he takes it from here.

There does seem to be a vacuum at BW atm that would lead to a rat race - I wonder how that will shake out.

my guess is it'll be out sometime before the Fall Uh ... yeah. I hope you didn't take any bets on that. Though I'm not sure this will push back DA4 from the (likely Fall) 2022 launch I hope you didn't take any bets on this, either. but I'm fairly certain they've factored Anthem into the equation. Oh, they have. Just ... well, not in a good way.

They should call it "Anthem 76: Reforged", where any build you make is copyrighted by Blizzard, Andrew Wilson makes you pay for your loot drops, & the final boss is Todd the God Howard whose attack is "16 Times the detail" this attack makes you buy a fallout first subscription for a year.

Yes, a positive bias does ignore the reasons for the leaving. And, while the manpower turnstile keeps moving, positive biased folks look at the numbers on paper and see no staffing issues. So, what's the big deal?... they ask.

Well. One question that sprung to my mind just now involves the possibility Bioware adding in any sort of new content with the 2.0 version. My rational side steers towards them adding something in order to make the updated version more palatable. However, I am a bit of a skeptic by nature, so I have my doubts. FFXIV and NMS are listed as potentially similar examples of what EA & Bioware are doing now, but I haven't played these, and I never paid them much attention... so if anyone in the know regarding these two can fill me in, I'd be thankful for that. ...And on another note: It would take at least five hours of my time to list all the things wrong with me, neither of us want that so I’ll just sit here on BSN and enjoy the Anthem cynicism instead thank you very much 👍🏻 Ironic how all the cynics I know IRL (and most of the ones I talk with online) are perfectly capable of enjoying Anthem cynicism without shitting on the amped-up optimism of others. Would've cost you zero of anything to say nothing of ol' smiley boy's optimism... so considering this is BSN, makes sense you'd make the bad decision. You gotta stop kink shaming me bro, this is how I get my rocks off, shitting on naive people’s optimism. Now you’ve gone and killed the mood for me, I hope you’re proud of yourself.

SWTOR didn't make over a billion dollar because they don't know how to do this. - Diablo 3 didn't truly turn around until the Reaper of Souls (and Loot 2.0) came out, which was nearly two years after it launched. - The Division 1 didn't truly see big positive reception until patch 1.8, which also came out nearly two years after the game launched. - Destiny, while typically righting itself within a year (w/ expansions like Forsaken and The Taken King), has been a series rife with several fuck-ups. - Warframe took several years to get itself to where it is now (with things like Parkour 2.0), and Digital Extremes has somewhat hurt their reputation with the December release of Emperyian. It added a game mode that, while cool in concept, had extremely poor balancing and the RNG grind associated with it was abysmal. They've improved it somewhat, but a lot of fans of the games say they wish DE had simply waited till this year before releasing it. The only looter-shooter that's come out rather unscathed in all of this is Borderlands; specifically Borderlands 2. Borderlands 3 had a good early-mid game, but it didn't bring a substantial endgame experience, and additional hotfixes brought a lot of ire from the community; due to many skill nerfs. While I think Anthem screwed up to a more noticeable degree than those other games, the fact that these other games still exist kinda showcases the resilience of games within the genre.

Reminds me of certain bridge construction debacle that happened in my country some years ago... Kudos if they manage to pull it off (even if they sold a beta test in the first place and took them 1-2 years to make it worthwhile to play). Luckily, i don't like looter/shooters in the first place, so if something good/bad comes out of it, i wouldn't shed a tear... unless it proves to be a in/direct blow to DA4 development. The best case scenario is that every possible anthem scenario is already pre-baked into the existing massive delayed da4 expected release.

Maybe it's a competition to find junior directors? "The Old Guard has jumped ship, but if you can turn it around you'll land big." Don't expect anything soon. It's just marketing barble. The loot problems have been known since launch. It's old news tried to be packed in a new wrapper. I know that devs "jumping ship" is sorta what folks pay attention to in order to keep their negative bias nice and plump... which is why it may have been overlooked that they've also been hiring quite a lot of people for quite some time now, both for Edmonton (for DA) and Austin (Anthem and SWTOR). Anthem lost 2 directors. That's people who steer. Robertson was supposed to lead the online service to calm waters. And the other one brought it just over the finish line. Doesn't take negative bias to notice a situation there.

These directors aren't auteurs - games need leads, but they aren't rudderless in case something happens to directors, nor we know anything about Anthem remaining rudderless. Them leading Anthem on calmer waters doesn't mean someone didn't already take over to steer the game on an open sea.

It's like the Astro's press conference today, "oh yep, we cheated, we won the world series in 2017, it had no effect on the outcome, get over it". BW's half baked statement about dev'ing and putting out 2.0 was a crap show. Once they come out and tell it like it is/was, I might buy in. I know we shouldn't dwell on the past, but dammit, they got my $60 plus and really don't seem to give a sh!t. Last thought, if they end up charging us for whatever 2.0 is, there will be a revolt, calling it now.

They want to do things right, but they need time to fix stuff and create content for soft relaunch, the likes of which we already saw happen successfully multiple times and know very well it usually takes over a year to do, because creating games like this is very hard. This includes reshuffling in leadership and team. In other words - nihli novi. And it's very unlikely anybody's gonna charge anyone anything. People kept negative nancying about how Anthem will monetize virtually everything after launch.... that still didn't happen.
