For me the worst part was lying to Ellie about it and not letting her make that choice. It should have been her choice.
Joel was being a selfish coward at the end in any case. I thought that was the shocking brilliance of the ending?? Turning the protagonist into the bad guy.
Of course it's understandable why he did what he did. Doesn't mean I have to like it and excuse it. If most people were always cool with what Joel did, then what was so shocking about the ending exactly?!
I wonder though, if TLOU2 was made to "convert" all the Joel fanboys, does the game achieve that? Is that what the game tries to do in the first place? Because it sounded like that to me before release. Druckmann stomping his foot going 'But.. but Joel did WRONG! Don't people see that?! Ima set things straight. Ima show em how evil that was and what evil cycle of violence it caused. Oh yeah, that this, Joel fans!'
(We can take this to the spoiler thread if more suitable.)

The problem I have with a message about the "cycle of violence" is that every individual is responsible for their own choices. Did Joel do wrong? Maybe. I haven't thought about it, trolley problems bore me. Ultimately, nobody made Abby do what she did, and nobody made Ellie do what she did. Each is directly responsible for their own actions, no one else is to blame. And when you trek halfway across the US just to torture and kill a guy, you shouldn't be surprised that someone might be inclined to behave similarly. I took a break from the game at the part where Abby and Ellie came face to face, so I dunno what I will learn when I resume it, but Abby saying "We let you live" to Ellie and Tommy, as though she feels like she would have been justified in killing them earlier, when they had no involvement in Joel's actions whatsoever (Tommy was not present and Ellie was unconcious and also a CHILD) makes it extremely hard for me to sympathise with her position. At least the people Ellie's targeting were a) directly involved with the thing she is angry about and part of an organization that, according to texts you find around Seattle, behave like fascists anyway, and have a lot of other blood on their hands.

Really I don't get why people try and say what Joel did was some inexcusable sin in the first game. Yes he killed the Fireflies, but only after they prevented him from seeing Ellie, was planning on harvesting her brain without her consent and was perfectly willing to kill Joel, by drawing guns on him first, when he tried to stop them. Was it "selfish" of Joel to stop the Fireflies in the end? Maybe, but then I would say they were also incredibly "arrogant" to think that they didn't have to tell Joel or Ellie the ramifications of the procedure or that they would just accept the outcome. I ran into that problem with The Last of Us Part 2, but instead of the online community talking about how it was some heinous act you committed the game itself tries to tell you that. Its why I never connected with the game after that point I think and why I think the story failed on what it was trying to do (at least for me).

I figured this was safe, spoiler free stuff:
The soundtrack is really good. Obviously, I've listened to it a ton in the background of two full PTs, but I just finished playing the OST on my PS4 a while ago. My wife found it relaxing. I found it more sad, likely because I associate different tracks with sad things we've seen and done in-game. Still, it's very good, mellow listening.

I might get the game, but I'm having mixed feelings and conflicted about the game, because of the controversial story. I'll probably wait when the game is for sale.

Better to feel like you scored a good price, or dodged a big loss, than to feel like you wasted $60. It will be available on deep discount no later than Black Friday. I always tell myself that I should take advantage of those sales, but apparently I'm impatient and don't listen.

There is no context on offer for any of the scenes and besides.
The fact you can die by jumping off cliffs or by purposefully failing a qte shouldn't be considered a spoiler in my eye.
._. I mean it's a Naughty Dog game
Edit: I still deleted it though for the sake of all the people who somehow were asleep for the prior year and still might be interested in the Saga of Steroid Abuse simulator 2020

Are there many people either not progressing well with the game or not yet decided they don't want to?
I'll admit I have to double-check which thread I'm in sometimes as they are very similar, and it might be best to just have only one spoiler acceptable thread after a reasonable time (maybe 1 month post-launch).

That to me shows there were a lot of pre-orders for the game especially when taken into context with the UK/Eurpean drop of about 80%. It will be interesting to know the overall data six months from now when sales pretty much will have dried up.

Wow, Naughty Dog must've fucked up big time. And it dropped sales in the U.K. by 80%. I don't think the drop in sales tells us much. We knew it was the fasting selling PS4 game ever. There was naturally going to be a dramatic drop-off in week 2. Certainly the mixed reception will impact sales to some degree; but it will take time to see just how well it sells.

In the larger scope of things, that’s still an exceptionally high percentage. God of War, for instance, only dropped about 35%, and sold about 10 million copies in its lifetime. It’s possible that the initial surge of purchases in the first week may account for some of that drop-off, but a percentage this high would be hard to attribute that to a meaningful degree, as well as mixed or negative reviews. The most likely culprit is the availability of used copies, of which there seem to be quite a few.

The thing with The Last of Us Part 2 is what Sony's goal for the game might be different then a third party publisher. The big goal for a first party developer title is to sell consoles its why they don't have things like you see with EA when they will have Live Services or add a multiplayer function to the game because they make additional money elsewhere. I am pretty sure the re-release of The Last of Us when the PS4 was released moved hardware because people were so invested in the game and reviewers like Angry Joe gave the re-release a higher score because of the improvements when moving to new hardware. Now when Sony looks at The Last of Us Part 2 are they going to see a game that moves hardware or helps get them to their financial goals for the game for a seven year development cycle with a lot of crunch is going to be an expensive game to make.

Maybe not PS4 hardware, but they might have been looking to do the same thing they did with the first The Last of Us and release a remastered edition to draw people to the PS5. Not saying that is what they wanted to do, but normally selling copies of a first party game is part of the equation its why they don't have lootboxes or a lot of microtransactions for they are looking to boost other metrics.

Fastest selling exclusive. 4 million in the opening week. Really good for an action/adventure . Saying it's the fastest selling PS4 game might confuse the issue. Fallout 4 sold 12 million in its first week and sure its cross platform but it's not in the same league. Most of the extremely popular games go cross platform to go even bigger. The notion that sales dropped by 80% by its second week is probably partly due to the divisive nature of the game. Everyone who supports the game got the game in its first week but I'm not sure it'll have the legs to match something like Uncharted 4 which sold over 16 million copies in its first 3 years. But we'll see : )

But because of the controversial story, it might affect sales on the long run and will suffer because of it.

I had to get this one sooner than I normally would in the cycle if there was going to be any hope of playing it without spoilers.
I'm starting Day 2 and so far, I'm happy to see the quality of the writing and performances is still really high, and the I'm happy with the improvements to gameplay (although they aren't as extreme as they were made out to be.)
I still haven't been exposed to anything that would explain all the controversy, but I'm aware that most of it stems from stuff further along in the story than where I am.
