I mean, there is only one Liara.... Well, I believe that Liara is pretty much a different character each game. It's not a phenomenon unique to her; recurring characters in video game franchises often struggle to remain consistent, probably because of the amount of time and people involved in the development of any given title. Some might dismiss the idea as "character development", but the change usually happens between games rather than within them. So, I guess my question is, when you say that Liara is the second most realistic romance, do you mean ME1 Liara or ME3 Liara?

Take that for what you will, I see no difference between her progression between 1 to 3, which goes from naive bookworm to shepherds closest confidant. It felt like a real progression to me across all three games when it comes to the romance as well.

I miss ME1 Liara. They really hurt her character in ME2/3.

Oh well.
To answer the thread's question, my favorite love interest would be a toss up between ME1 Ashley and DA:O Leliana. I guess I like them personable, fun, and down-to-earth.
But I would deem the best romance to be ME3 Liara, and I think it's precisely because she gets a disproportionate amount of screentime compared to other characters. There's more genuine chemistry and intimacy than in any other Bioware romance I've played through, and even the sex scene is among the best and most tastefully done. This is, incidentally, why I advocate for fewer romances with each getting more content.

This was probably an issue (a legitimate one actually) that I found in ME3: a lot of romances have no bearing in the story. Miranda Lawson was my romance for ME2 and my first playthrough of ME3 but I found it to be pretty underwhelming (despite a wonderful final scene). This was the reason why I played many playthroughs with Ashley as my romance interest, because her role in the story was deeply connected to the main narrative, as was Liara's or Garrus' or Tali's and Kaidan's... and someone else I might be missing ? But yeah, Dragon Age Inquisition might have too many romances.

But yeah, Dragon Age Inquisition might have too many romances. I disagree. Though that may be in part because my favorite LI wouldn’t have been one if they did have less. Also if they had less I doubt they would have the kind of relationships I want.

Unfortunately I went for the male straight options and... they weren't very good Favorably for DAI though, it does offer the most diverse romantic options I've ever seen in a videogame.

Josephine was an option for you then, so I have to disagree since she was my favorite romance in any game. Unless you meant you went for the straight men in which case yeah I agree. Yeah, it definitely did. It had a few straight men and women, a lesbian, a gay man, a pansexual man, and a bisexual woman who could also be seen as asexual/Demisexual. Not to mention how diverse the romances themselves were with these characters, which thankfully MEA followed suit.

I could barely even finish it. I will say, to maintain ourselves on topic, that at least Josephine's romance is connected to the story. She moves and acts in accordance to the events of the story, she reacts to events and functions as an ally. Granted, she wasn't in the first two DA games but the idea is important: whoever the LI is, they also need to be a fundamental part of the narrative and not just an accesory to the player.

Can someone explain to me where the actual difference between Bull and Josephine is that the former is seen as pan and the latter as bi? To my limited understanding of the definitions, bi is usually seen as "male or female" in a strict sense, while pan is "gender definition doesn't matter"? Does this come up in game, as male/female are pretty much an either-or gameplay check?

Patrick Weekes in Twitter stayed The Iron Bull was pansexual so I’m using that since he wrote him.

Morrigan: Very well written and interesting character arc. I'm not a fan of a few of her actions toward the end of the game, and her DLC makes her come off slightly poorly. But her development into DAI is one of the few things I like about that game.
Kaiden: The best overall romance for ME trilogy. He is generally just well written and likable. He has most of his stuff in order, and he manages to be manly without acting macho.
Alistair: Similar to Kaidan. He is very well written, likable and nuanced. The amount of outcomes for him is welcome and I genuinely think he is very funny, entertaining, and endearing.
Tali: I'm not a fan of Tali myself personally, but I think she works extremely well with male Shepard. The dynamic between them is great and they actually feel like a couple. I wanted to say Miranda, but I didn't care for her arc being repeated in ME3. I really don't care about Miranda's sister at all.
Cora: Unpopular opinion but she is my personal favorite. Its nice to have a human female in a Bioware game that is laid back, nice, polite, doesn't have some shady past, and gets along well with most people on the crew. She's not incredibly deep or anything but this kind of character is a nice change of pace from the Mirandas, Leilienas, Isabellas, and Ashleys. She shows she cares just enough for it to be endearing as well. And despite MEA poor facial animations, I think she is good looking. Some mods make her even hotter.

Garrus is the #1 choice. Yeah, there is definitely something wrong with this board.
