Seems like you're living in a different country after all. Yes, people complain - but that's just our way. When push comes to shove, they'll do what's required of them. Complaining is fun, being fined isn't. Says the girl from Vienna. Vienna is different from the rest of the country, it is its own little planet, planet Vienna, this is known. Vienna is the California of Austria, it even has a different language, culture and laws of physics compared to the rest of the country. I visited several hardware stores, post offices, gun shops and shooting ranges, and about half the people don't wear any mask at all or care about social distancing, including the staff. If Covid19 measures are being mentioned people react like they have rabies, they all just want back to normal, people either think its a complete overreaction from the government, a conspiracy or that the virus is no worse than the flu. There is a reason the infections have risen lately, people are angry, confused and don't care anymore, their attention spans have ended. Plus the laws are not enforced, so they are basically only suggestions. If people understood and obeyed those simple rules, infection rates would plummet. Lest we be too hard on California, let's remember states like Florida. This really isn't a red or blue state thing in the sense that people are tired, burnt out and not thinking rationaly. Some started out acting stupid, others are just worn out; and all the while, the danger is still very real.

Helpful advice during these times. Fun fact - back in the military we were not allowed to raise our right hand in order to ask a question or use our right hand to point at stuff during exercises etc., only the left. There were incidents were recruits raising their right hand were photographed and then in the newspaper it said ''Austrian soldiers doing the Nazi salute''. A total scandal. I shit you not. Soldiers and recruits mixing up right and left were punished and disciplined - severely.

Plus the laws are not enforced, so they are basically only suggestions. If people understood and obeyed those simple rules, infection rates would plummet. You seem to forget that I get the best of both worlds as I spend my weekends on the countryside. My observations don't differ, funnily enough. People are fed up - either with the virus or the restrictions - but that doesn't mean that we're on the verge of a riot, an apocalypse or anything else. It's rather calm where I've been. Maybe it's a local phenomenon in your area. Btw a good friend of mine works for the police in Vienna. He's told me the same thing: people that get fined are annoyed and like to complain, obviously, but the aggressive person is rather the exception. If anything, he noticed that people don't get as piss drunk as they used to before Covid-19. Well, at least not in public. I don't think we need to state the fact that domestic violence (more often than not in combination with alcohol abuse) is a big problem in times like these. In public transport, the laws are enforced too. I have seen several people getting fined for not wearing a mask, some bus drivers refusing to let people in without one etc. But you're right in saying that some of the laws will never really be monitored as it's simply not possible and/or realistic to do so.

According to our minister of the interior and the published data domestic violence has barely increased at all since the pandemic. Makes for good headlines tho. I can already see it: *Men beating the everloving shit out of their family due to the Pandemic. Is there a connection between rabies and Covid19? More on Page 2! *

First and foremost: domestic violence isn't defined as "men beating the everloving shit out of their family". It is a very complex topic with much more to it that meets the eye, and I am honestly surprised you dismiss it with a joke. Secondly, I think you are misinterpreting the published data you are referring to. Domestic violence can't just be measured by offical police reports. I read this article recently which clearly states that the number of calls on telephone hotline has, in fact, risen during lockdown, which is an indicator that (unreported) cases of domestic violence have also risen. It is similar all over there world where strict lockdown measures are in place. But yeah, I am sure it's much more fun joking about it than doing a bit of research, like you could find here.

Your sense of humor has declined as much as your urge to instruct people has surged. I hope that unfortunate setback is of.....temporary nature. Thank you but I'll go with official data from the department of the interior, I think they are much more capable and competent at correctly interpreting the general situation than various, sometimes less than independent (-phone call) services. Actual registered and confirmed cases of domestic violence is a better indicator, and MUST be used as the main reference point, than the number of phone calls of phone services. I hope it is self evident why that is.

My sense of humour is now more intact than ever, thank you very much. The next time you make a joke I deem funny, and I know you're capable of that as well, I shall let you know. Thank you but I'll go with official data from the department of the interior, I think they are much more capable and competent at correctly interpreting the general situation than various, sometimes less than independent (-phone call) services. I hope it is self evident why that is. Umm okay. I'll leave you with this then. On a positive note, in 2017 home invasion with the intent of burglary have dropped to a 10-years low in Austria, mainly due to more preventative measures being in place. Also, over 40% of all cases end up with the offender not being able to finish the burglary because of said measures. I bet this because they wrapped several burglaries into on case to falsify statistics like they did with car theft / car radio & equipment thefts a couple years ago. - Dozens of car thefts that happened in Vienna were wrapped into one case because they ''assumed'' those crimes were committed by one gang, this was done several times until the statistics looked as desired by the officials. Since that I laugh at the statistics about criminal activities that come from our government, or any other statistic for that matter. Heck, give me any numbers about specific crimes and I can twist and turn them until you get the desired outcome. Thats why they say that you should only trust statistics you have falsified yourself.

Umm okay. I'll leave you with this then. ] And it is STILL better than drawing conclusions of the general situation of a country by counting the slight increase of low-two-digit numbers of calls of a phone hotline. You know, I throw the wild assumption out there that the increased number of phone calls are all unjustified and more about ''my partner is being kinda rude since we're more stuck together than usual due to the current circumstances. This all sucks. '' And that every phone call is not an actual individual case. You cannot prove me otherwise. Such is the statistic of phone calls. Now, registered cases of a crimes, flawed as they are, are still more trustworthy and we HAVE to take those as reference point to base our statistics on because it is the best we have. I hope that is crystal clear, and I find it weird I have to spell that out for you.

Well domestic violence has gone up here since lockdown... This is specifically about Austria, especially because the minister of the interior said that domestic violence has not gone up by a significant amount, recently. I do not know about Britain. Aaaaanyway, today I got a call from a friend in Namibia, Africa. He is a white farmer and has his own cattle ranch, talked about him about then general situation due to pandemic, and he said crime and lootings are rampant now and everything is out of control. He can't even leave the country due to patrols of gangs etc. Funny, there is nothing in the news about that situation. I hope he'll keep out of danger.

Well domestic violence has gone up here since lockdown... This is specifically about Austria, especially because the minister of the interior said that domestic violence has not gone up by a significant amount, recently. I do not know about Britain. Numbers have gone up in Austria, based on the study you mentioned. They haven't gone up by a significant amount, also true. But isn't each case one case too many, to cite the Minister of Interior you base so much trust in? One third of interviewed people mentioned more tension at home. One third mentioned more harmony at home. One third didn't notice any difference. Those 3 don't disprove one another. I claimed that (a) a rising numbers in reported cases (however insignificant) + (b ) an increase in calls of support numbers = (c) indication of higher likelihood of domestic violence during lockdown, which several scientific papers, one of them cited, back up. I said domestic violence is a big problem in times like these. Which it is, for each person affected by it. I never said that numbers have skyrocketed and I never claimed any statistics were wrong, just that there are cases that stay unreported and, by taking other indicators (b ) into consideration, this might help estimating the actual situation. I really don't know what you are argumenting against so fervently. I hope that is crystal clear, and I find it weird I have to spell that out for you.

I thought you just quoted me distrusting official numbers from the minister of interior, why do you say I trust him much? Or do you put those words into my mouth in order to make my point look worse? I think the department of interior releases the least bullshit numbers with the most amount of logic in counting / estimations, especially compared the other sources that were mentioned, as they are less biased and in they way the count reported cases vs. phone calls. Just to put things in perspective, the amount of phone calls has risen from approx 20 to approx 30. Also, since they are phone calls nobody knows what is even going on. It can be a number of things, hence my point that it is not data I would seriously consider for any kind of statistic. Also, you can at the same time say that the willingness of people to report potential cases by phones has risen. It could very well be that situation since it is a very slight increase over ''normal''. Do we even know at what rate the readiness to call the hotline has risen during the past couple years? Has the hotline been marketed aggressively lately that lead to more calls? Have there been more calls/day in the past, or fluctuations? Nobody knows. Is it an indicator? Well, for which of those things, exactly? This is why I rather go with the amount of reported cases from the department of interior, there are way too many unknowns with the services and the slight increase of double digit numbers of cases of services cannot be used as an indicator for pretty much anything. Yes, according to the minister of interior the cases have increased, by an absolutely tiny amount. Is it a tragedy? Yes, its sad that the cases are not going DOWN as they should be, any number above 0 is a tragedy. Is this all an indicator for anything? For now - Nah. I think you have never seen me argument fervently. This all is only of mild interest to me, bad as any kind of violence is, I'm not affected by domestic violence of any kind, neither are any of the people I hold dear, and its not anywhere near the top of my list of things to argue about. In fact, for me this discussion isn't even really about domestic violence, I mainly question the use of sources for statistics and logic's behind it. It could be about any number of other topics and it would be the same to me. Thus, I'm not emotionally invested in this topic, but I would understand it if you were, which in fact whats seems to be the case.

Its well known that Vitamin D plays a vital role in many illnesses with inflammatory symptoms, low levels of vitamin D lead to much more severe and long lasting inflammations, and they can even be triggered by a lack of said vitamin. Hence the higher rates of chronic inflammatory diseases in the northern hemisphere.
I used to have chronic low levels of vitamin D since I'm a total night owl and work long hours in the office (very little exposure to the sun, even in summer), I used to have skin white as snow. Since I've been taking care of being exposed to a proper amount of sunlight regularly my health has improved significantly.

In my reading, I came across the fact that people with darker skin require a slightly longer time in the sun to get enough vitamin D. I didn't know this! More melanin might help protect one from skin cancer, but there's some trade-off as far as Vitamin D goes.

There are rumors of my country going into another lock down in the coming weeks, in two weeks from now and another one between Christmas and new year, mainly to get the infection rates down to a level where winter tourism wont suffer too much. Right now Austria has been labeled a hot zone by many countries, and that's obviously not good for any kind of tourism. Winter tourism is absolutely vital for many areas here...
Well, makes sense, but it would suck, lets see what happens.
