Funny, in Germany FFP2/KN95 masks are now MANDATORY in many grocery stores! They are also now mandatory in my office. They distributed them to us a couple of weeks ago. The elderly are sent envelopes with coupons by the government for the good masks to be picked up at pharmacies. Amazon prices are climbing as a result of these new regulations but it's still easy to get your hands on them. So I guess the shortage is over. At least here. I thought it was only Bavaria which mandated FFP2 everywhere, while other states only have them mandatory for nursing homes, whereas otherwise it is either FFP2 or the common teal medical masks?

So no fresh bread for you, Beetle?? THE HORROR Especially considering I haven't eaten bread in years because of my grain intolerance. But I guess there are a lot of people out there now who think that not being able to eat fresh bread every day is a violation of human rights, an assault on freedom and some kind of conspiracy against bread connoisseurs.

I'm from Saxony. Hm, could be a discretionary thing then, so I have to read the signs. Unless they attempt to do a mask ban, if that is a thing around here.

Some things in life are so hilariously predictable. So for the vaccine they are finally opening it up to other parts of the general population here (75 or older to start). You can book via on line or phone in. So of course the government people in charge all say they have tested the web booking capacity, and phone in capacity and we should be good to go. EVERYONE I talked with casually all agreed, 'yeah the system will immediately be overwhelmed and will crash and phone in waits will be hours.' So the system opens this am and I look at a news web site. SYSTEM CRASHES, PHONE LINES JAMMED!

Today I called my doctor about the vaccines, he said he neither has any actual vaccines nor does he have any information about them and I should give civil service a call. I then called civil service and they said they are not responsible for the vaccination waiting lists and that I should call my doctor. I called my doctor again and he insists on not knowing shit about any vaccines. Then I called the vaccine / covid hotline and they said any questions about the distribution of the Covid vaccines should be directed to either my doctor or civil service. Yeah. Just as expected. If this Covid virus would be a real killer like pox or something, we all would be wiped out in weeks due to sheer incompetency despite all our technological advancements. Why am I even paying taxes....

No timetable here either, just a vague word that everyone will get their jab before autumn. Riiight... it used to be before summer.

So, the vaccination schedule was finally made public, and it's not a very fun read. As a noncritical healthcare worker I'm supposed to get the jab in august. But since I'm unemployed I won't hold my breath, because these things usually go via your workplace. Meaning, that I may just as well be in the healthy adults -slot, who are getting vaccinated before the end of the year. 2021 won't be much different from 2020. Oh joy...

Three days ago I was pissed about not getting the jab earlier. Now, I don't care anymore. I made the mistake of taking the red pill, when you should always opt for the blue one. I read two comments in The Lancet; the first was about the Brazilian variant, and the second described a way out of the pandemic. And thus died my optimism. Resurgence of COVID-19 in Manaus, Brazil, despite high seroprevalenceSARS-CoV-2 variants and ending the COVID-19 pandemicThere wasn't much of a lockdown in Manaus, and according to estimates even 76% of the population had the bug first time around. Yet there are now even more cases, meaning that heard immunity is not a thing with covid. Which means of course that vaccinations are not going to be very effective in the long run. And lets just say that I don't see our politicians taking the steps required to mitigate the pandemic. We are where we were a year ago, the best you can do is wear a mask, wash your hands and socially distance.

My own family doctor told me that covid is here to stay. We'll still deal with it in ten years... Herd immunity is not likely to stop the virus fast enough to account for mutations. Vaccine roll-out is too slow. Best we can hope for is reducing the threat to flu level on a seasonal basis. If we can curb severe symptoms (through vaccines or meds) we'll just learn to live with it and not fear it anymore. Annual shots at some point are likely. Masks and social distancing won't go away any time soon though. :/ Here's a good recent article: www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-00396-2The majority of scientists believe covid won't disappear.

If covid becomes endemic, we'll lose a lot of loved ones in the coming years, unless the vaccine production steps up considerably. And I'll always fear covid, it's a deadly bug.
But yeah, completely agree. I had read the article and recommend others read it too.
BTW, it would appear that cases are going down not because of vaccinations, but because people have changed their behavior. Keep those masks on!

Yeah, we are going to have to rethink our society somewhat. How we interact socially, without for that matter, going full on germophobes. Anyway at our health care center we have opened for the elderly populace (outside of nursing homes) to call in to book time for vaccination. The lines have held so far. We have about 7500 people listed but I have to admit I don't know how many of them are elderly.

As of today, two of my sisters have gotten their second shot. My third sister had her first and is scheduled for the second on 23 March. All three got the Pfizer shot. I'm in tier three, but with the rapidly increasing supply, I might actually get my shot(s) by May … which is earlier than anticipated. A real possibility my whole extended family (except those under the age of 16) will have their shots by June.

Not just Denmark but now Italy too because they had 40 bad cases of allergic reactions to the vaccine - also South Africa sold their AZ stock to other African countries. Not sure how bad it really is, but it seems to be the least desirable and least effective vaccine of them all by far.

I can't believe how far ahead of Germany other countries are... My mom in the high risk group probably won't get her first shot until May or June. It's a disaster.
It's going so slowly because our government decided to drown the process in paperwork and long explanations about the vaccine to every person. My family doc said currently it takes 30min per patient talking to them and filling out the paperwork afterwards which is why he's actually refusing to do it until they streamline the process. If we did it quick like flu shots, we could be vaccinating millions in short order. He said giving the shots in local doctor's offices would speed things up because they know their patients and their medical history, so they can tell who might have a bad reaction and advice them not to do it right away.
Imo we don't behave time to explain to every idiot that the vaccine won't change their DNA and whatnot. Have them fill out the paper on allergies and stuff at home and get it done as fast as possible.
So vaccination is super slow AND we're loosening restrictions while the mutations are spreading. What could possibly go wrong...

Just reading through this thread, I'm kind of shocked that countries other than the US are behind on vaccine rollout. I got my first dose through lucky accident, kind of. The county health department had hundreds of doses that were going to expire because of people cancelling their appointments (or just not showing up), so they contacted a few employers around town to offer vaccines to employees, and were able to use up all the doses. It took a little over an hour of waiting in line, plus 30 minute wait time after the vaccine. We were expected to fill out paperwork before showing up, and people who weren't prepared were pulled out of line to fill out their forms. But for the second dose, which I got a few days ago, the process was very efficient. Entirely drive-through, 20 minutes from arrival to when I was able to leave, including wait time afterward. And again, people who didn't have their paperwork ready were pulled out of line so no one else was delayed. That said, our governor has lifted all restrictions and mask mandates, and preemptively blamed his political opponents and illegal immigrants for any future covid surge, so there is that
