Battlestar Galactica and Babylon 5 are clearly the main influences on Mass Effect along with a dash of Star Trek and Star Wars but did anyone notice that Vigil was an advanced non-organic analysis system with personality imprints of Ksad Ishan and the book A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge had something similar.
In a promotional video by EA for ME3 you could see a copy of Dan Simmons Hyperion on a desk of a developer at 1:59.
Were there any influences of the Hyperion Cantos on the Mass Effect trilogy?
What contemporary sci fi would you like to see Bioware take inspiration from?
The Expanse and Imperial Radch are considered by readers to be the best space opera series of this decade. Should the next great Mass Effect game look take inspiration from those?

The Expanse. You don’t need to span the galaxy to have interesting stories, plus it would be nice to have a Mass Effect game that’s more consistent with its technology. I wouldn’t mind having a companion like Amos that just beat the shit out of people and/or kill them for you while remaining pretty chill about it, and Alex >>>>>>> Joker lol

Even with 25 year old special effects, Babylon 5 still gives me goosebumps.
ME1 gave that feeling from time to time, but has never matched it since:
For more modern series: The Ember War, Empire of Bones, and The Lost Fleet series.

Peter Hamilton's always struck me as someone who fits ME fairly well. Pandora's Star even has the functional equivalent of indoctrination, although Starflyer agents don't deteriorate the way victims of indoctrination do.

Next-gen would allow for sci-fi cities of greater scope. I'd love to see a more cosmopolitan Citadel with districts having their own unique style and zipping around in flying cars. Valarian may have sucked as a movie, but it's also one of the few I can think of that put some effort into creating a city with numerous alien races.

Oh yes, the comic album from 1975 is amazing and still hold, a true classic. See also Ambassador of the ShadowsBack then before personal computers, my sister and I as young teenagers swallowed Valérian and Laureline albums. The Citadel in ME and the Nexus in MEA to me are clearly inspired by Christin and Mézières amazing comics.

More often than not people forget Farscape is also an inspiration for Mass Effect. For my part, as I said in another topic, I think the next game should either focus on pirates, mercenaries or criminals in general. It would offer a very distinct perspective on space exploration

They tried that with ME3 already... Well it was a bit of a Fiasko. It's not a good idea probably to combine galactic genocide with Lem themes. Lem's stories worked on a much smaller scale. Fuck pangalactic cataclysms alsready.

The Transformers and not those headache inducing Micheal Bay abominations but mostly from the following cartoon shows and comics:
Cartoon Shows: Transformers: Beast Machines This is the one show that actually had something to say besides "buy the toys" and did it compelling way and is still has the most terrorizing version of Megatron not because of his visual design but because he actually has a legitimate point and while he's fanatical the series does a really good job of making Optimus a fanatic in his point of view.
Transformers: Prime A lot of great character work most mostly notably with Autobot Arcee and Decepticon Starscream. Also a great voice cast that features some BioWare alumni.
Transformers: Beast Wars Considered by many to be the best TF series combines tight plotting, a smaller cast of characters, and great characters and voice work to make a genuine sequel that stands up to the original and brought a lot of concepts that are being used in the various shows.
Transformers: Cyberverse The current series is both a homage to the original series but also isn't afraid to change gears and go in strange and new directions without any warning. From the start of it's third season being a epic four part "the final battle between the Autobots and the Decepticons on Cybertron" to the Transformers version of The Matrix arc starting with episode 5.
Comics:
The Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye/Lost Light Want to do a very funny, touching, romantic, light, but when it goes dark it can get very dark and very violent story? Then look no further than writer James Roberts' epic.
The Transformers: Robots in Disguise/The Transformers/Optimus Prime The first arc is set after the recent Autobot/Decepticon War and even though the Autobots won, how do build a new government and culture and trying not to restart a war. Political, very dark, and the lines between good guys and bad guys are blurred, a slow burn at times but a worthy read.
The Transformers: Last Stand/Sins/Requiem of the Wreckers The Wreckers are the super elite Autobot special forces who get the dirtiest and most violent jobs. Violent headcases, mass murder, tough as nails old bots, and that is the good guys.
The Transformers: All Hail Megatron The Decepticons win and the Earth is theirs but what does Megatron want now that he has everything? The answer is shocking. Also if you want to see classic original 80s Transformers Decepticons to look like scary as hell then this will do it.
