I don’t think Mass Effect 2 really did it all that well, and this is due in large part to the fact that most companions didn’t really have any kind of proper story-driven reason for them to join us. Mordin is the only one that’s really relevant, and the others are just a shopping list for accessories. Couple that with the forced alignment with Cerberus and the forced drama between Shepard and the VS, and I was mostly just anticipating for that setup to be over with. Well, save for Tali and Garrus, they at least had some kind of loyalty to Shep. But yeah, ME2 handled things poorly storywise. And it would even make some sense for Garrus and Tali within the context that the Illusive Man was trying to curate a group of familiar faces to placate Shepard’s misgivings about Cerberus, but that doesn’t really reconcile the superpowered, psychotic space pirate we can’t even leave behind after tearing through the bulkheads of the prison ship lol.

I had no real problems with the ME1 squadmates not carrying over. Kaidan and Ashley weren't worth shedding any tears over. Wrex and Liara may not have been squadmates but they still had tons of focus. And, well we got Garrus and Tali.
That and Bioware knocked it out of the park with the squadmates in Mass Effect 2 in general.

Can say the same for Vakarian and Wrex since both are an option to be recruited. Could add in the asari as well. No need for her to be a squadmate. Since she can be rescued at the last moment, she was never needed on the squad. After she says Ilos, she gets left on the Citadel while Shepard heads to Ilos. Is he? Take away the ones that make a difference if everyone lives or dies during the suicide mission, I would say those characters are relevant. Ah yes, the pathietic scene on Horizon between A/K and Shepard or rather dumb and dumber. How different would that scene have played out if the asari informed the Alliance about Shepard's body?

This is why I like Dragon Age’s model. I don’t need to have the same roster dragged about for multiple games to be satisfied. Aye, don't know how they'll handle the continued team mates of MEA (if it ever is continued), but I'll be seating on the sidelines, not giving a damn. It's a fine seat.

I see some staying, some going but still being important NPCs, and some that could go either way.For example: Cora: Staying. She found herself accepting her being passed over as Pathfinder and wants to stay as your second. Liam: Leaving. Maybe makes that response group he promised to make, being sort of like Bradley where he and other help sometimes. Vetra: Could go either way. She talks about both wanting to stay but also dreaming of retired life. If she leaves maybe she acts as a connection between the Nexus and Exiles. Drack: Leaving. He found value in his life again so goes back to New Tuchanka to be with his great grandkids and teach the origin their past. PeeBee: Could go either way. She found a place she belongs, but if she leaves maybe helps us with Remnant things. Jaal: Could go either way. If he leaves, maybe a connection between Nexus and Angara. Lexi: Staying. She talks about how she grew to love field work. And how nobody else wanted to take the job anyway. Kallo: Staying. He’s as attached to the Tempest as Joker was the Normandy. Suvi: Staying. She talks about how she took a position as being a connection between the Nexus science team and the Tempest. Gil: Leaving. He says he wants to be there for his kid. Maybe he takes over for Kesh.

I could imagine Liam working well in the role of a secondary villain. He's proud, naive and probably easily manipulated.
I imagine it would be very cathartic for players as well.

I don’t think Mass Effect 2 really did it all that well, and this is due in large part to the fact that most companions didn’t really have any kind of proper story-driven reason for them to join us. Can say the same for Vakarian and Wrex since both are an option to be recruited. Could add in the asari as well. No need for her to be a squadmate. Ah yes, the pathietic scene on Horizon between A/K and Shepard or rather dumb and dumber. How different would that scene have played out if the asari informed the Alliance about Shepard's body? No, not really. All of the companions we recruit in ME1 have a personal interest in the initial plot thread that leads them to [possibly] coming along with us. Whether or not they’re proven to all be vital to get us through every plot point doesn’t really matter. What matters is that there’s an actual story-related reason why they’re there in the first place. Whether or not someone wants to leave X companion behind because they’ve seemingly exhausted their usefulness is a different matter. Yes, Mordin is the only recruitable companion that’s relevant, because it’s established immediately that we need his expertise to deal with the seeker swarms. Okeer deserves notable mention because he had close dealings with the Collectors, so Grunt ends up being an accident we didn’t account for, as well as Legion. The rest is more just a hodgepodge of weirdos for us to populate the ship with, but there’s no clear idea what any of them would be particularly useful for, and none of them are particularly motivated about fighting the Collectors other than that Shepard hired them to do it. I just wish that there were more companions that had more of a personal interest in the main story to some capacity. Like, imagine if we had gone to Horizon, and there was a former Alliance soldier that survived the ordeal, and decided they wanted to come with you to help stop them.
